Experts advise sex tech founders on handling the current tech industry landscape.

For this edition of the Future of Sex Expert Series, we’re asking our experts: Given the turbulence the broader tech industry is experiencing, how will the sex tech industry fare? Will sex tech be impacted in the same way?

In part one, we highlighted the hundreds of thousands of tech industry layoffs reported by a tracking site called Layoffs.fyi. 

Browsing through Layoffs.fyi, it would be easy to assume that the sex tech industry isn’t as affected. The table doesn’t have explicit categories for sex tech, femtech, or sexual wellness—so you need to know what to search for.

For example, period tracking app Clue, which laid off 31% of staff in January 2023, is listed under “Healthcare” or OnlyFans, with reported layoffs in August 2022, is considered “Media.” 

Regardless of how it’s categorized, it’s evident that the sex tech industry has been susceptible to layoffs. We reached out to both OnlyFans and Clue for comment. OnlyFans declined, stating they couldn’t provide a quote “due to other commitments.” 

As for Clue, a spokesperson provided information about their sex life tracking feature, adding: “Going forward, we believe that community-led product development will be key to growth and sustainability in this space and that is what is informing our priorities for 2023.” When asked directly about the layoffs and their recent equity crowdfunding campaign announcement, the company didn’t respond.

While those responses didn’t pan out, we did hear back from other sex tech professionals with practical advice for founders navigating these turbulent times.

Mariah Freya, Co-Founder and CEO of Beducated

“As opposed to the tech industry in general, our industry has the advantage that we never have been spoiled with easy access to money. 

“In times like these, this is our superpower: We know how to run a lean business that doesn’t break the bank at the end of the month. And we never got addicted to expensive social marketing channels simply because they don’t want our money in the first place. 

“So all in all, of course, we’re not independent of macroeconomic shifts like they are happening now, but we do have some advantages over other industries.”

Beducated is a pleasure-based sex education platform with over 100+ available online courses. Beducated is Freya’s second company as a co-founder, the previous being Metamonks, a personal development media company. 

Glenise Kinard-Moore, Founder and Creator of The VDOM

“Given the sensitive nature of the data that sex tech products collect… It will be crucial for sex tech companies to invest in robust cybersecurity measures and regularly audit their systems to ensure they remain secure.

“Companies that prioritize information security and establish themselves as trusted brands in the industry may be in a better position to weather the broader turbulence of the tech industry.”

Kathrin Folkendt, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Femtech Insider

“The economic climate is tough right now. This, of course, also affects the VC ecosystem, and I think right now many are still figuring out how to best navigate the current situation. Priority for VCs is to support their existing portfolio companies right now, which puts startups raising an early round at a disadvantage. 

“When people are nervous, they also tend to rely on what they know, what they’re used to investing in. Unfortunately, femtech and sex tech aren’t the go-to categories for most investors, which makes it difficult for founders who are fundraising now. This is especially problematic for sex tech founders, who were already at a disadvantage given the limited number of investors comfortable with the category. 

“The good news, however, is that the demand is there. Consumers and retailers are becoming more comfortable with the category, and there is a growing interest in sexual wellness and health products and services. Hopefully, this will help to raise VC interest over the next months and years. If you’re running out of runway soon, this… isn’t incredibly helpful for you. 

“So my (very general) advice, if you’re struggling to raise a round: Look at other avenues like non-dilutive funding grants or crowdfunding.”

Experts weigh in on the state of sex tech amidst a wider economic downturn.

Throughout the past year, instability in the tech industry has made headlines globally. Companies of all sizes have taken other drastic measures, such as mass layoffs or seizing operation segments, to stay afloat in the current economy. 

According to Layoffs.fyi, a website tracking tech layoffs since the start of COVID-19, over 164,500 employees lost their jobs in 2022. That number was already surpassed in 2023, with over 197,000 reported layoffs at the time of publishing.

At Future of Sex, we wanted to know: Given the turbulence the broader tech industry is experiencing, how will the sex tech industry fare? Will sex tech be impacted in the same way?

We posed this question to a variety of sex tech professionals with former tech industry experience. Our experts have worked as engineers, researchers, and more for companies ranging from renowned corporations to early-stage startups. 

In part one of this edition of the Future of Sex Expert Series, we share responses on how these shifts in the wider industry may empower or harm sex tech. 

Nicole Schwartz, Researcher at Internet of Dongs

“I feel the overall turbulence spreading through tech because of banking concerns and recession fears have the potential to impact the sex tech industry from a sales perspective. I expect people will be less inclined to purchase luxury or more expensive sex toys. I also am concerned that the industry could be impacted by banking working to reduce their risk profiles, as anything adult immediately is assumed to be more risky, and making it harder on the industry to access funding for companies that have less robust finances.

“If finances are tighter and sales are reduced, I expect to see iteration in the industry to try and leverage things which catch attention (like machine learning) but also do not significantly increase production costs.

“At the same time I expect the increase in unemployed technologists to generate more entrepreneurial attempts in the sex tech industry. This is concerning as many of these projects which come from ideas and are pitched are high risk for consumers as there are considerations that entrepreneurs are often unaware are even concerns that more traditional manufacturers are aware of. These risks include consumer data protection, internet connected device security, materials human safety, hardware security and safe failure methods.”

Internet of Dongs is a project where the team hacks smart sex toys to measure their security and privacy. Beyond Internet of Dongs, Schwartz has held various Product Management roles at tech companies like GitLab, Rackspace Technology, and more. 

Flo Wrist, CCO of VR HOT

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, big tech companies hired thousands of employees, particularly in 2020 and 2021. While business is returning to normal in most markets, many of these companies continue to employ more people than they did before the pandemic, even after large-scale layoffs. 

“Sex tech companies are much smaller but will likely also face serious challenges, including inflation and ongoing supply chain issues. Despite experiencing inflation and a general stagnation in the PCVR market, we at VR HOT are optimistic about the next few months…”

Angelina Aleksandrovich, Founder, CEO, and Creative Director of RD Land

“Historically, the sex industry has been relatively resilient in the face of economic and societal challenges. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the sex toy industry experienced a surge in demand as people sought out new ways to explore their sexuality while socially distancing.

“Additionally, the sex tech industry is a relatively new and emerging market with significant growth potential in the coming years. As society becomes more comfortable with the intersection of technology and sex, it is likely that demand for sex tech products and services will continue to grow. 

“That being said, the sex tech industry may face unique regulatory challenges around privacy, data security, and ethical considerations.

“But overall, I believe that the sex tech industry is likely to continue to grow and innovate in the coming years, as technology continues to play an increasingly important role in our personal lives and sexual expression.”

Most existing menopause support is online or hormone-based. Here are new alternative treatments for peri to post-menopause.

While the FemTech industry is largely focused on advancing menopause care, many of the daily menopause symptoms are treated with sex tech innovations. Issues caused by drops in estrogen—like vaginal atrophy, painful sex, or lack of vaginal lubrication—all affect our sex drive, and that’s a significant part of menopause. 

In October 2022, FUN FACTORY surveyed a thousand self-identified women over 40 about their sex lives. And their results confirm that the effects of menopause and our sex lives are intrinsically linked.

“One in five women experiences a drop in libido during menopause, but another one in five experiences an increase,” the results read, “While 42% of women aged 40+ need longer to orgasm, many report newfound freedom and desire for sexual exploration.”

Regardless of where the topic falls in the tech landscape, menopause has been historically underfunded, and most available solutions are hormone-based, which can be costly and come with many adverse side effects. 

Now, new startups and renowned brands are developing modern, tech-based solutions that ease symptoms and promote healthy sex. Here are four of those products.

Tabu

Made specifically for menopausal people, Tabu is a sexual wellness brand that offers sex toys, lubricants, and more. All products are FDA-cleared, vegan-friendly, hypoallergenic, and hormone-free. 

“Tabu pulls insight from doctors, therapists, and real people experiencing menopause to make sure everything they create aligns with their mission to celebrate and honor sexual wellness as we age,” a PR rep told Future of Sex.

The brand’s flagship product, Golden Hour Kit, is designed for people experiencing painful sex, vaginal dryness, and atrophy through peri- to post-menopause. The kit includes The Nuri vibrator, which features an optional heating head to stimulate blood flow, and an organic, water-based lubricant.

Tabu also offers a vulva stimulator called The Pearl, designed to “promote tissue health” and enable orgasms through four vibration patterns and at varying intensities. 

Last year, American lifestyle retailer Anthropologie began selling Tabu products in-store and online.

Grace

Developed by London-based health tech startup Astinno, Grace is an automated tracking and cooling bracelet designed to detect and fend off hot flashes. 

It works by activating a cooling patch on your wrist, and the process is fully automated, so you can also wear it while you sleep to prevent night sweats. The company also hopes to launch a mobile app to help people better understand their symptoms.

While the product’s purpose is broader than sex, preventing hot flash symptoms before they interfere would undoubtedly improve sex during menopause.

According to the product website, “Grace is currently in development and so is not available to purchase yet.” In May 2020, Astinno announced grant funding worth ￡360,000 to develop Grace, but there haven’t been any recent updates.

FUN FACTORY’s MenopauSEX curated collection

Following the results of their menopause survey, FUN FACTORY released a curated selection of products called MenopauSEX. 

The website proudly claims: “Menopause is not a death sentence for your sex life… No matter where you fall in the spectrum of symptoms, our products can support the full menopausal experience.”

To craft a holistic collection, FUN FACTORY partnered with Momotaro Apotheca, a certified organic vulvovaginal care line that sells lubricants, suppositories, and other sexual wellness products.

The MenopauSEX page sorts by menopause side effects, ranging from irregular bleeding and sleep problems to “hornier than before and feeling adventurous.”

Each category offers some combination of sex toys and wellness products. For example, the “weaker orgasms” selection shows a flutter-tipped vibrator, weighted kegel balls, and an oil-based bath tonic and spot treatment.

MysteryVibe’s Legato

In September 2022, MysteryVibe revealed the world’s first labia vibrator, Legato. According to the company’s press release, Legato is a “ground-breaking vibrator designed to flex and adapt to different labia sizes and enhance sex at every stage of life from menopause and beyond.”

Shaped like a large penis ring, the ergonomic labia vibe can stretch and dilate to fit your body and comes equipped with four “anatomically placed” motors to provide 360-degree external stimulation. 

Legato can be used independently or as an aid for penetrative sex. You can also pair it with the MysteryVibe app to create custom vibration patterns or allow your partner to control your device remotely.

Amboy Street Ventures Closes Its $20M Debut Fund Dedicated to Women’s Health and Sexual Wellness

“Venture capital firm Amboy Street recently closed its first $20M fund dedicated to investing in sexual wellness and women’s health. The firm is led by an all-female leadership team; a majority of investments will be made into women-led companies.

“The lack of investment in these spaces has stifled innovation. Amboy Street wants to be a catalyst for change and will back startups at seed and Series A stage, who address… Issues, such as menopause support, male contraceptives, abortion access, and LGBTQIA+ health…” (via Femtech Insider)

Some sex tech startups in Amboy Street’s portfolio include Contraline (male contraception), Dame (sexual wellness products), and Dipsea (audio erotica).

FSC Report Reveals Widespread Financial Discrimination Against Adult Industry

“Free Speech Coalition (FSC) has released a new report detailing the extent of financial discrimination against the adult industry.

“The report reveals that an overwhelming majority of adult industry workers have lost a bank account or financial tool due to their source of income.

“The report follows a study conducted between December 2022 and March 2023 by FSC and Sex Work CEO, an educational platform for sex workers. Over 400 members of the adult industry took part in the survey… The report builds on scholarship and studies conducted by groups such as Hacking/Hustling and CLEAR, and by researchers like Dr. Val Webber and Bianca Beebe.” (via Dave Parkman / XBIZ)

AI Companion Apps Are Removing NSFW Features, and People Are Not Happy

“In February 2023, AI emotional companion app, Replika, removed its NSFW feature of erotic role play (ERP).

“Replika founder, Eugenia Kuyda, states that the app was never meant for sexual relationships, but their premium ERP feature was appealing to a large user base seeking companionship and intimacy for various reasons.

“Replika isn’t the only app to change the formula. Recently, many AI companion apps and platforms have been rolling back certain NSFW functions or establishing more stringent filters that prevent any content deemed erotic or sexual. Character.ai rolled out an NSFW filter that disables users from erotic role-play, much to the chagrin of its many users.”

MindGeek (Pornhub Parent Company) Acquired by Ottawa Private Equity Firm

“Pornhub and Brazzers parent company MindGeek has been acquired by a new Ottawa private equity firm, Ethical Capital Partners… while ECP did not disclose how much it paid for MindGeek, it said that ‘alongside unnamed international investors who helped fund the deal, it now owns 100 percent of the company’s shares.’

… ECP founding partner Solomon Friedman, an Ottawa criminal defense lawyer, telling the Globe and Mail that the new owners hope to ‘openly promote ‘consensual and sex-positive adult entertainment’ and spark discussions around trust and safety in sex work.’” (via Gustavo Turner / XBIZ)

Morari selected as a finalist for the San Diego Angel Conference

San Diego Angel Conference (SDAC) announced the six finalists moving forward toward the final pitch at the event on April 22—and Morari Medical made the cut. The company’s MOR climax delay patch is the only product explicitly marketed for sexual wellness.

SNAP! and the Brussels Porn Film Festival are back for a 2nd joint edition

Experts explain the opportunities that equity crowdfunding campaigns offer sex tech startups.

Stigmatized by conventional venture capitalists (VCs) and financial institutions, it’s no surprise that sex tech startups have turned to crowdfunding as a viable option for raising funds.

While sex tech companies faced rejections from platforms like Kickstarter in the early 2010s, it’s becoming increasingly common to see a sexual wellness product marketed on crowdfunding sites. Indiegogo even had an “After Dark” collection featuring its sex tech campaigns. 

Over the years, we’ve reported on dozens of sex tech crowdfunding campaigns. Some products, including the kegg kegel trainer and bionic strap-on dildo Ambrosia Vibe, more than doubled its fundraising goal. Others were forced to close after failing to reach their targets, such as Arlan Robotics’ oral sex robot and Hybri’s mixed reality hologram partners. 

All of the above campaigns follow the model of democratized supply and demand. Anyone can put in money to back the initiative and show interest. In return, these people receive an early or discounted product version.

Now, we’re noticing a new trend in sex tech: Equity crowdfunding.

Through equity crowdfunding campaigns, companies raise money from the public and typically accept relatively small amounts of cash. Popular crowdfunding service WeFunder, for example, allows you to invest “as little as $100 in the startups and small businesses you believe in.” 

But, unlike traditional crowdfunding, these people won’t necessarily get a product in exchange for their contribution. Instead, they become public investors and receive a proportionate slice of the company’s equity.

For this edition of the Future of Sex Expert Series, we wanted to talk to sex tech entrepreneurs who have been there. The types of crowdfunding campaigns (and the outcomes) may vary, but they all have thoughts on just how effective equity crowdfunding can be for sex tech.

We asked each of our experts: What do you see in the future of equity crowdfunding in sex tech?

Alexandra Fine, CEO and Founder of Dame

“Crowd equity has a powerful role in sex tech because institutions will always struggle to see the value of this taboo industry. Individuals are much more likely to put their money where their mouth is.”

In 2016, Dame launched Kickstarter’s first sex toy campaign for its finger-vibe Fin, making nearly eight times its original $50,000 goal.

Then, in 2017, Dame’s hands-free clitoral vibrator Eva became the most highly funded adult product in the history of online crowdfunding, raising $575,000 in just 45 days. 

Jeff Bennett, Founder and CEO of Morari Medical

“The future of equity and rewards-based crowdfunding is very bright for both sex tech companies and non-sex tech companies. Crowdfunding provides companies with another investment option should they be challenged by traditional investment options. In addition, crowdfunding allows companies to build a community of current and future customers that can be advocates of your company and be a resource for help if needed. 

“We launched an equity crowdfunding campaign and look forward to working with the investors to help bring our product to market. These are motivated investors that are willing to help make their investment payoff.”

Announced in September 2022, Morari’s WeFunder campaign had raised over $600,000 at the time of publishing.

Val Elefante, Head of Community at Lips

“Equity crowdfunding has proven to be a viable solution to the challenges of fundraising that many sex tech companies face as a result of venture capital (VC) sexism and stigma against sex and sex work by investors, banks, payment processors, and all throughout the financial community.

“However, I think the irony is that equity crowdfunding campaigns—while extremely time and energy-consuming in the short term—actually boost, expand, and support businesses more in the long term than just receiving fewer larger institutional or singular angel investments.”

Patricia López Trabajo, Founder and CEO of MYHIXEL 

“At MYHIXEL we have… been accepted for investments that at the last moment have backed out for reputational reasons, so, without a doubt, [equity crowdfunding] is an important and necessary resource to boost companies dedicated to the sex and sex health tech sector to achieve their goals…

“There are cases of well-known companies in the sector that have resorted to this type of investment and have been successful, such as Plátanomelón or MysteryVibe. So, in my opinion, equity crowdfunding has a long way to go in the sex tech and sex health tech sector.” 

In 2019, MYHIXEL raised $160,000 in 10 months via product crowdfunding campaigns on Indiegogo and Kickstarter. After this success, the sexual wellness brand launched another Kickstarter campaign in November 2022. At the time of publishing, that campaign had raised over €540,000.

Darren Smith, Founder of Pillow

“Funding for sex tech may move onto the blockchain. Globally, we have a new monetary system being born that sits alongside the fiat system: bitcoin, crypto, NFTs, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). The discrimination and difficulties that sex tech founders have wrestled with for years from the gatekeepers of a heavily censored system and programmed societal ‘norms’ are crumbling away faster than you can say ‘polyamory.’ 

“I see crowdfunding operating through a co-ownership model, tied to your crypto wallet, with NFT’s being used as social proof of your memberships, beliefs, and value system. I believe this to be the future we’re moving towards across the board, not just for sex tech.”

Sex Alternative Relaunches ‘Porn for TV’ Streaming Site

“Sex Alternative has relaunched its Porn for TV website, billed as an alternative to smart TV apps for viewing porn.

“Since most TV app stores do not allow explicitly pornographic content in their apps, a rep noted, ‘streaming it to TV can involve a difficult setup process. Any porn site can be viewed with a smart TV browser, but it’s a frustrating interface for browsing websites, considering that the TV remote cursor is either too slow or often misses the mark when pointing… Porn for TV was engineered to operate like TV apps when using the remote.'” (via XBIZ)

Games like Eroticissima spell the future of sex and romance

“Enter Eroticissima (Eros for short): a VR game where users create their own digital avatars to meet in a common area, interact with other avatars, and decide whether they want to enter a room for an x-rated simulation. Players have the option to choose various adventures with salacious results, or pick a room of their preference without a quest and simply play with their chosen avatar. Each private room has a different atmosphere… Eros is essentially a sex club—except you’re wearing a headset and miles away from your erotic partner…

“Through the lens of an avatar, Eros encourages real connection, conversation, and sensation in ways people never have before. Van Stenis’ goal is to use technology beyond static images on a dating app or solo-player VR games with no real person on the other side. Morari selected as one of the 13 semi-finalists for the San Diego Angel Conference

In a news post from March 3, San Diego Angel Conference (SDAC) announced the 13 semifinalists in the running for the $200,000 funding prize. The list includes wearable sex tech developer Morari Medical. 

The company’s MOR climax delay patch is the only product explicitly marketed for sexual wellness. Other semifinalists in a similar field include Estrigenix, which develops therapies to reduce the mental and physical effects of menopause, and pumpspotting, a software solution to help companies create inclusive spaces for breastfeeding.

Germany-based PEEKU Launches a New Media Platform for Erotica Written by Womxn for Womxn

“Germany-based PEEKU… is launching its new digital platform for user-generated erotica. PEEKU was founded by Anabel Romero and Nicole Gruber earlier this year with a mission to destigmatize female desire. The duo wants to create a safe space where the desire, fantasies and lust of womxn are prioritized…  

“All stories on the platform are deliberatly user generated”, explains Romero.

“We are convinced that there are countless exciting, hot, funny, or romantic stories that are worth telling. Our platform offers authors an easy way to share their stories directly, quickly, and easily with the community. Female pleasure is a globally relevant topic. AI backlash begins: Porn AI community criticized, artists file lawsuit

“As 2023 has kicked off, there’s a growing backlash against some of the companies building [AI porn technology], fuelled by accusations of artwork theft, sexualizing selfies, and aiding non-consensual generation of sexual imagery through deepfakes, has hit.

“AI image generator companies have been sued by artists, AI porn image-sharing communities have been curtailed online, and at least one AI system has been called out for creating content allegedly portraying sexualized images of a child.” (via Jamie F / SEXTECHGUIDE)
