Introducing the Mod: Comingle’s Hackable, Mind-Controlled Vibrator

Bored of your standard-issue personal sex device? Psychic sex toys have arrived.

Open-source tech company Comingle has recently launched the Mod (Multivibrating Open-Source Dildo). Dubbed the world’s most hackable personal sex device, it offers limitless options to customize your vibrator to meet your pleasure needs. While regular sex gadgets might feature multiple speeds or vibration cycles, users can design their own with the Mod vibrator.

Made from 100% silicone, it features a USB “hacker” port, three powerful vibration motors, and the Dilduino, a uniquely modified, Arduino-based microcontroller board.

The Dilduino board also makes the Mod a smart device, allowing it to interact with almost anything you can plug into its USB port. Comingle has already demonstrated it working with image capture devices, heartbeat sensors, and even capacitive touch.

The most impressive combination by far is with the Muse, a brain-sensing headband that enables users to control the Mod with their minds. Transmitted via wireless Bluetooth, the Mod reacts to your mental signals, responding to blinking, jaw clenching, and your level of excitement.

The Perks of Programming Sex Toys

Besides the novelty factor, and the possibility of mentally directed sexual stimulation, the Mod also has significant potential as a therapeutic device. For many people living with a physical disability, the inability to masturbate can be detrimental to their quality of life.

Like a growing number of hands-free personal sex devices, the Mod may open new sexual pathways for those struggling with mobility issues. With its nearly infinite capacity for customization, the Mod could be ideal for aiding the handicapped to lead more fulfilling sex lives.

Although coding your own vibration patterns might sound challenging, the Mod is designed to be a plug-and-play device. Making use of Comingle’s open-source OSSex library, the Mod’s Dilduino board allows it to store and execute a variety of programs and custom vibration patterns.

There’s no advanced knowledge required, thanks to its simple and intuitive software platform. Custom programs are also available for upload online. This means you’ll be able to design your experience from the ground up, tailoring the device’s behaviour to your specific sexual needs.

Get the Mod

Shipping this July, the Mod comes to us through a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. Even though the devices aren’t on the market yet, the Mod has already won the Golden Kleene award for Most Innovative Sex Toy at the 2014 Arse Elektronika awards.

Early adopters looking to get their hands on the Mod can pre-order by donating to Comingle’s Indiegogo campaign. Packages range from $45 for a Dilduino board to $190 for the full Mod, complete with peripherals and preloaded programs.

High rollers can also donate $1,800 for a Sexy Mod Workshop on hacking, or even a staggering $40,000 for the somewhat tongue-in-cheek Sexy Sky Time Package. Featuring a ride on a private jet with three friends, buyers will also be given a variety of different devices to try out on their trip.

Whether you’re a hardcore DIY enthusiast or a sex toy neophyte, the Mod has a lot to offer for users who are looking for something more.

“The Mod” vibrator was cancelled due to patent trolls (the troll patent looks like it was made by a 12 year old so I don’t know what the fuck the patent office were thinking). In fact the troll patent is so broad that ALL new remote or programmable vibrators are now blocked from production. Insane.

I am wondering if Comingle – designers of The Mod – could circumvent the patent trolls by establishing a patent in China and making it available for private export. They have no email address I can find to ask them.

Unfortunately. Comingle shut down last year because of the mental and financial strain caused by that patent suit: https://futureofsex.net/remote-sex/say-goodbye-to-the-mod-patent-suit-ends-production-of-open-source-dildo/

From what I know, a company could avoid violating the patent if the product was created outside of the US and also didn’t sell or ship to the US.

Actually, that first link talks about how they ended production of the Mod.
