Creating Your Own Pleasuredome: Modular Building and Smart Home Technology

Custom designing an erotic home and playground.

Brightly painted house

Recently, we looked at some possible changes to how we all may be living and playing, at home or elsewhere.

Love hotels for when sex needs a bit more room than microhomes can offer, as well as virtual and augmented reality to give the illusion of space, are certainly intriguing ideas. But there are more innovations in interactive tech and flexible design that will alter our houses of the future

So what happens when we take the concepts of modular construction and smart home technology and do a bit of future-casting?

Let’s rev up our imaginations and try to picture our sensual, and sexual, residences of the next century

Plug-and-play living

Building anything from scratch is not just difficult and time-consuming but very, very expensive. Modular home construction, however, is not just easier and cheaper than traditional methods but it also can provide a huge range of living options.

Think of it as plug and play: living room goes there, kitchen here, dining room there, workspace there, a place for guests, and then a special environment just for sex.

And if there isn’t a pre-designed room for what you want, you may very well be able to assemble your own. Standardized assembly means you don’t need to do anything from scratch.

Assembly of structures, too, is on the verge of a huge revolution. Combining modular structural design with giant versions of 3D printers, builders can now do in a week what would have taken months.

A smart home for smart sex

Then there’s the idea of smart homes, which can take sexual space customization to a whole new level.

Part of the Internet of Things, the concept of the smart home is to create intelligent spaces embedded with sensors and actuators that are connected to a local network or the Internet. Heating, cooling, humidity, energy collection (via solar panels, etc), energy usage, what’s running low in your fridge, the progress of your laundry, what plants need attention in the garden… all of this and more will be tied into systems that will either act on their own or draw your attention to what you might need to do.

Your smart device (watch, phone, whatever) will let your residence know you are on your way, heating or cooling to the ideal temperature, prepping a shower or tub, pre-warming the oven, putting some tunes on. If you’re bringing a playmate along, their preferences could be added to the mix to create an idyllic environment for all kinds of sexual activities.

Our pleasuredome

To each their own, of course, but now that we have some tools to play with, let’s try a hand at envisioning our own erotic environment.

The heating and cooling would be intelligently designed and controlled, of course, intuiting your personal comfort. No more cold feet, goosebumps, or the unarousing sweat from being too hot. To save energy, it would switch itself off but would also able to be conjured into sensual comfort at a moment’s notice.

The walls could be configured to whatever suits your erotic needs. Want to go for a Victorian vibe? Flocked wallpaper and fancy trim could be clicked into place—or stored away when your needs change. Similarly, it could be equipped with transforming furniture: a gentle pull and your desk becomes a bed or a table becomes some unique form of BDSM sex equipment.

Projectors or luminescent panels could also be part of the decorations: digital illusions of everything from a luscious beach to a mesmerizing fantasy environment. Or why not enjoy a virtual group sex scene by projecting someone else’s bedroom onto your walls?

There’s no reason why you also couldn’t couple interactive sex tech devices to the environment as well. Each gentle wave from that beach illusion tied to the arousing action of all kinds of intimate devices, for instance.

Our pleasuredome could also monitor everything from pheromones to specific sound patterns and react by ramping our toys up, or cooling them down, as needed.

And let’s not forget our other senses. A subtle command to your home system and roses, leather, a pine forest, or fresh baked bread could tickle noses—supplied via a store of carefully selected scents. Perfectly balanced speakers would be embedded into the walls themselves, for a perfect surround-sound experience as well as some acoustic dampening for those who like their sex with volume.

Finally, as our home would be an intimate and efficient size, and made of units that could be simply added or subtracted, it would also be extremely portable. As with shipping containers designed to fit on trucks and ships, modular homes could be constructed to be easily transportable, needing only a standardized base for utilities like water, power, waste, and such.

Your home could come with you wherever you wanted to go: the world becoming just another optional feature for your personal environment.

A living tomorrow

Intelligent bedrooms that will know and respond to your sexual desires. Portable and almost infinitely customizable microphones designed to be both comfortable and erotically alluring. It’s certainly fun to speculate, but if we’ve learned anything it’s that no matter what we dream up the real future is always much, much wilder.

But, no matter what does come next, we’ll hopefully all have a place to call home.

M. Christian

M.Christian (they/them) loves nothing better than exploring the intersections of sex and technology—and speculating on the future of both. A highly regarded erotica writer they have six novels,12 collections, 100+ short stories, and 25 anthologies as an editor to their name. Their non-fiction regularly appears in many sites, but they're most proud of being a regular contributor to Future of Sex.

Of their erotic fiction, Tristan Taormino said that “M.Christian is a literary stylist of the highest caliber: smart, funny, frightening, sexy—there's nothing [they] can't write about… and brilliantly.”

Reflecting their unique ability to sympathetically and convincingly write for a range of genders and sexual orientations, their stories have appeared in multiple editions of Best American Erotica, Best Gay Erotica, Best Lesbian Erotica, The Mammoth Books of Erotica, and others. Their collection of gay erotic fiction, Dirty Words, was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award.

While a majority of their stories have been collected into books like Dirty Words, their fondness for combining sex and science fiction is clearly evident in collections that include Rude Mechanicals, Technorotica, Better Than The Real Thing, Skin Effect Effect, Bachelor Machine, and Hard Drive: The Best Sci-Fi Erotica of M.Christian.

As a novelist, M.Christian’s versatility is on full display with Running Dry, The Very Bloody Marys, Brushes, Painted Doll; and the somewhat controversial queer BDSM/horror/thrillers Finger's Breadth, and Me2.

M.Christian has worked on the industry’s production side as an Associate Publisher for Renaissance E Books and as a Publisher for Digital Parchment Services. The latter dedicated to celebrating the works of science-fiction legends such as William Rotsler, Jerome Bixby, Jody Scott, Arthur Byron Cover, Ernest Hogan, and James Van Hise.

Covering topics like BDSM safety, sexual education, senior sexuality concerns, queer and gender issues, plus reviewing a variety of sex tech products, M.Christian’s non-fiction has appeared on sites like Kinkly, Tickle.Life, Sexpert, Queer Majority, Sex for Every Body, and—of course—their ongoing work for Future of Sex.

If there’s anything M.Christian enjoys more than writing, it’s teaching. A featured presenter, sometimes with their friend Ralph Greco Jr, at national sex and BDSM events, they have lectured on kink play (with an emphasis on safety), polyamory, boosting sexual creativity, and erotica writing--for beginners or those wanting to go pro.

M.Christian is a cohost on two popular sex-education podcasts: Love’s Outer Limits with Dr. Amy Marsh and Licking Non-Vanilla with Ralph Greco, Jr.
