Breaking Barriers: AI Chatbots Redefining Access to Sexual Healthcare

From mental wellness to sexual education, inclusive chatbots are leveling the playing field

Ever felt like getting the right info on sexual pleasure and health is like finding a needle in a search engine? A new generation of inclusive chatbots are destined to change all that!

Sure, they might still have a few quirks (we’re looking at you, occasional hallucinations), but recent studies show they do a brilliant job of opening access for folks from all walks of life, including people who are already struggling against systemic disparities in medical and mental health.

Helpful bots are soooo not judgy!

Social stigma and judgment standing in the way of your mental health recovery? In England, at least, help is at hand. In 2023 London researchers created an AI-enabled self-referral tool and then put it to work.

The result? An impressive 15% increase in folks getting the help they need, with even bigger boosts for people who are non-binary, bisexual, or part of an ethnic minority. There was a 235% increase in self-referrals among non-binary people, a 30% increase among bisexual people, and a 31% increase among people in ethnic minorities.

This was a large-scale study. The researchers from the Max Planck UCL Centre for Computational Psychiatry and Ageing Research and Limbic Limited, Ltd. collected data from 129,400 patients in 28 facilities. In addition, 42,332 of those patients gave qualitative feedback, which was also analyzed.

What made this self-referral chatbot such a success? For people in gender minority groups, it was that the non-human nature of the chatbot reduced experiences of stigma and negative judgment (which can show up as damaging microaggressions, among other things). For people in ethnic minority groups, the chatbot also supported their awareness of the need to obtain treatment, again without stigma or judgment.

The researchers concluded, “This paints a promising picture for the use of AI chatbots in mental healthcare and suggests they may be especially beneficial for demographic groups that experience barriers to accessing treatment in the traditional care systems.”

It is not much of a stretch to imagine similar results might be obtained from studying well-trained chatbots with access to sexual health information.

In fact, such studies have already been done.

India’s SnehAI sex ed bot for youth—brilliant, entertaining, educational, accessible

Say hello to SnehAI, the hippest sexpert in South Asia! Hopping on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, SnehAI serves up a mix of Hindi and English wisdom to millions of curious minds. It’s like having your own personal BFF sexologist on speed dial for all those burning questions about sexual and reproductive health. Plus, it’s not just informative—it’s entertaining too! No wonder SnehAI is still making waves since bagging the eNGO Challenge Award in 2020.

For all her perky charm, SnehAI, was created with serious purpose by the Population Foundation of India to “educate and inspire adolescents and young adults to live healthy lives, promote sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and advocate for the health and well-being of women and girls.”

In 2022, a team of international researchers evaluated SnehAI and found that the chatbot was indeed a resounding success, engaging in “8.2 million messages exchanged across a 5-month period.” Many of the users were young men who texted “deeply personal questions and concerns about sexual and reproductive health, as well as allied topics.”

Researchers said that SnehAI presented and was received as “a trusted friend and mentor.” The bot used curated edutainment content and a natural language processing system which personalized her responses. SnehAI quickly became a safe, private, and popular resource for the young people who accessed the app.

The researchers concluded, “SnehAI is a powerful testimonial of the vital potential that lies in AI technologies for social good.” SnehAI is still going strong, and its website offers many resources for young people.

AI for the win: making health accessible to all

Though sexual health concerns were not the main focus, they were included in a study published this month by researchers from University of Westminster [], the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, and Positive East.

According to HealthcareITNews, this qualitative study took on the task of creating guidelines for inclusive AI in health care through interviews with thirty-three stakeholders from various backgrounds.

The study emphasized equity, diversity, and inclusion in AI design and use and, through framework analysis, created a roadmap for utilizing inclusive AI in healthcare settings.

Dr Tomasz Nadarzynski, who led the study at the University of Westminster, feels inclusivity is “crucial for mitigating biases, fostering trust and maximizing outcomes for marginalized populations.” He said, “The development of AI tools must go beyond just ensuring effectiveness and safety standards.”

Researchers wrote ”conversational AI should be designed to address specific illnesses or conditions that disproportionately affect minoritized populations due to factors such as age, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or disability.”

The study also recommended healthcare AI be designed with community input, regular updates, user feedback, and they be added to existing services and care pathways and adjusted to “align with local needs.”

It takes a whole village, plus a chatbot

Who knew AI could become the ultimate equalizer in healthcare, including sexual health? The above researchers and others from all corners of the globe are on it!

The inclusive AI they’ve developed and deployed have already improved the sex lives and wellbeing of countless millions. So from crafting guidelines for inclusive AI to making sure every voice is heard in the design process, these visionary researchers and developers are paving the way for a future where everyone—regardless of age, ethnicity, or anything else—can access the care they deserve, one chatbot at a time!
