Kiiroo’s interactive vibrating stroker Titan is a slicker and smaller male masturbator compared to its predecessor, the Launch (No. 15). This is due to the fact the Titan does not need to be used with a Fleshlight.

Although more aesthetically pleasing than the Launch, its speed and power are no match. Yet since the Launch is out of stock indefinitely, the Titan is definitely a long-distance sex toy worth trying. Max 2 and Nora

Max 2 and Nora are Hong-Kong based teledildonics company Lovense’s his and her devices, although the Max can also connect to another Max, and the Nora to another Nora.

The stroker, Max 2, uses air-pump technology (unique to Lovense) to enhance the toy’s movement. Lovense has improved on the original Max design with a second option of silicone sleeve, more powerful vibrations, and a ribbed outer case for grip.

Max 2 connects through an app to the Nora, a dual-stimulation vibrator that contains beads in the shaft. Both toys can also respond to music played through the company’s app.

Pros: Simplicity: designed solely for use by couples. Nora’s rabbit design is a tried and tested vibrator design that appeals to many.

Cons: The design of both toys is less sophisticated than Kiiroo and OhMiBod, and the connection technology is not as advanced.

Hush 2 and Lush 3

Hush 2 is Lovense’s Bluetooth-controlled vibrating butt plug, while Lush 3 is a vibrating egg. Both are controlled through an app but do not sync with each other or other toys. So while they can be used in couples and over long distances, one partner must control the toy the other is using.

Future of Sex reported on Hush 2 when it was released, after a successful crowdfunding through Indiegogo:

“The waterproof, silicone Hush 2 comes in two sizes and has enough battery power for one or two hours of continuous use. Other features include an option for sound-activated use and a built-in encrypted messaging tool as part of the app.”

With Lush 3, Lovense has clearly listened to customers’ feedback on the original by adding a stronger motor and increased battery life. It is also quieter and easy to use.

For long-distance couples mixing up their repertoire, Lovense last year announced its collaboration with the creators of PussyTalk, who want to translate texts into action on the Lush 3 and beyond.

Pros: Both are comfortable, discrete and quiet.

Cons: Connectivity of the original Lush has been an issue for many users,  although Lush 2 has new and improved connection technology.

Gush and Dolce

Another pair of smart toys from Lovense is all but guaranteed to make the miles between you and your partner enjoyable.

Swedish company Lelo has upped the ante with Tiani 3, a dual-stimulation remote-controlled massager for women. It can be controlled by a partner or used during intercourse. Where it differs from the Tiani 2 is its squared head, which offers broader stimulation to the clitoris.

One reviewer at LELO said: “I could hold the remote in one hand and use it to tease him with the same vibrations I was feeling.”

Pros: Can be used during intercourse.

Cons: Not suitable for lovers interested in interactive long-distance sex.

Vibease and Esthesia

Vibease now has two vibrators compatible with its app: the dual-stimulation Esthesia and its eponymous clitoris stimulator. The Vibease app can make long-distance video calls, allows for couples to message each other, and syncs with erotic audiobooks.

“We now make Vibease as a platform for other sex toys,” Vibease co-founder and CEO Dema Tio told Future of Sex in 2016. “We provide the technology for other companies to make their sex toys become smart.”

Chorus

It is good to see connectivity and security issues attempting to be overcome in the We-Vibe Chorus. It connects to We-Vibe’s app, We-Connect, using new and more secure technology.

“Standard Innovation has created a great product with We-Connect,” Future of Sex review Jon Pressick said of the company’s app. “Once you get synced via Bluetooth the app can control vibration speed, pattern, and be stopped and started at will. It is actually really fun to play with.”

Although a potential front-runner for the company, with its mirrored movements and Feel Technology, early reviews for Reina and Rey are not positive, so we’re sticking with the Chorus in our listing.

Pros: We-Vibe has a range of products to suit all needs, shapes, and sizes.

Cons: The company was the focus of a privacy lawsuit.

Although out of stock, an honorable mention goes to Kiiroo and Fleshslight’s Launch, an app-controlled sex toy for men. The interactive device simulates sex with a stroking sensation focused on the penis.

It must be used with a Fleshlight, but can then be used manually or synced to a variety of VR adult content. It is also compatible with Kiiroo’s Pearl and Onyx products (numbers 3 & 4 on this list), so is perfect for long-distance partners.

Future of Sex’s review said: “Combining an expansive repertoire of functionality with sheer, brute power, this product will impress even the most skeptical user.”

Although Kiiroo’s Titan is more aesthetically pleasing than the Launch, it’s not as powerful. Unfortunately, however, according to a Kiiroo spokesperson, there’s no forecast date for when the Launch will be back in stock

Pros: Tailored stroke and speed, good for those with limited mobility.

Cons: Although quieter than the previous iteration, the Launch is still loud, and quite large and clunky—and sadly out of stock indefinitely.

In her first international interview, Nina Julie Lepique shares her vision for women’s audio erotica.

The connection between hotels, e-sports, and book summaries may not be immediately obvious. But back in February, founders in each sector became investors in a growing sex tech trend: audio erotica.

Trivago co-founder Rolf Schrömgens, Blinkist co-founder Holder Seim, and ESL league founder Jens Hilgers were among investors to contribute to the latest financing round—which totaled more than $3 million—for femtasy, a female-focused erotic streaming platform based in Germany.

“Audio has a very emotional connection to people, it’s super powerful in an intimate setting because it encourages us to imagine and explore our fantasies,” says femtasy founder Nina Julie Lepique in her first interview outside Germany.

It’s especially powerful for women as it doesn’t project any beauty ideals, making it easier to identify with. More recently, during stressful times, it can provide escapism from real-life problems.

femtasy, which was founded in 2018 by Lepique and partner Michael Holzner, is a collection of short clips, ranging from relaxing to very heated with much in between. They are read by more than 30 different voices.

femtasy describes itself as a combination of “a typical erotic portal” and an audio book platform. 

Opportunities in femtech

Having come from a traditional business background, Lepique says she realized “despite the sex industry going through a big revolution, there was still little to no content that is specifically made for women’s erotic needs”.

In 2017 she interviewed more than 1,500 women about their sexuality, launching in 2018 with 100 audio clips. Lepique says femtasy now has more than 1,500 audio clips in two languages.

Since the funding success in February the startup has tripled its team from 10 to 30 people and has moved its headquarters to Berlin, which Lepique says “has more of a creative, sexy vibe”.

With femtasy having joined the likes of sexual wellness apps Ferly and Emjoy, both also founded in 2018, audio erotica appears set to keep growing.

Emjoy recently raised a $3 million seed round and is valued at between 12 and 18 million euros, according to startup tracker Dealroom. 

“Last year the global femtech market generated $820.6 million and is estimated to reach at least $3 billion by the end of 2030,” says Lepique. She adds it is still an underdeveloped area of healthtech despite growing momentum.

In the next few years I imagine sex tech will be even more focused on catering to women’s health, and women will be pioneering and creating products that are created with a female-first lens.

Exploring the fate of controversial medications intended as “female viagra.”

Last month, US-headquartered pharmaceutical company AMAG announced it would be selling off two of its women’s healthcare products, Intrarosa and Vyleesi.

Intrarosa, a brand name for prasterone, is a prescribed vaginal insert used by women in menopause to treat pain during vaginal intercourse. Vylessi, otherwise known as bremelanotide, is a prescribed injection that can be used to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women.

Vyleesi—sometimes referred to as “female viagra”—received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in June last year. 

“There are women who, for no known reason, have reduced sexual desire that causes marked distress, and who can benefit from safe and effective pharmacologic treatment,” Hylton Joffe, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research’s Division of Bone, Reproductive and Urologic Products, said in an FDA statement at the time.

But the decision was not without controversy. 

The Washington Post reported the FDA approved the drug without putting together an advisory panel to properly analyze it. Some experts criticized the over-medication of women’s sexual desire situations, which may also be a result of lifestyle and psychological factors. 

And commentators noted Vyleesi’s underwhelming results, perhaps in part related to the myriad of factors influencing women’s sexual desire. This is in contrast to viagra’s more simplistic solution to erectile dysfunction.

Despite this, Vyleesi was largely seen as an upgrade from its predecessor, Addyi. It reported fewer side effects and, as an injection, is in many cases more manageable than ingesting a daily pill. 

In its statement last month, AMAG chief executive William Heiden said, “We continue to believe in the significant long-term potential of Intrarosa and Vyleesi.” AMAG has yet to disclose Vyleesi’s revenue contributions.

So why sell?

In August 2019, US hedge fund Caligan Partners acquired 10.3% of AMAG’s shares, making it one of the pharmaceutical’s largest stakeholders. It began to suggest changes to AMAG that initially unsettled the pharmaceutical company’s leadership. 

In September AMAG sent a letter to its shareholders, urging them to reject Caligan’s plans to appoint new board members.

Days later Caligan Partners addressed AMAG shareholders with a letter of its own stating AMAG’s incumbent directors had ‘overseen the loss of vast sums of shareholder wealth’ and urging them to accept Caligan’s proposal for four nominees to the board.

A month later AMAG announced a settlement agreement that saw two new directors, suggested by Caligan, appointed, expanding the board to 11 directors until the 2020 annual meeting.

The decision announced last month to divest Intrarosa and Vyleesi (as well as for Heiden to step down) came as a result of a strategic review, assisted by AMAG’s financial advisor Goldman Sachs. This review was also called for by Caligan Partners.

The statement said selling off the two drugs would help keep down operational costs for the company, particularly as it hangs on to preterm birth medicine Makena, which an FDA advisory committee has recommended be pulled from the market. 

Caligan Partners is often cited as an activist hedge fund—a fund that makes a large enough investment in a company to be able to participate in its management. In the Harvard Business Review Martin Prosperity Institute director Roger Martin called activist hedge funds “utterly reviled by CEOs” and their performance “ambiguous”.

In this case, AMAG’s shares had fallen 25% last year to 3 September close, with Caligan co-founder David Johnson calling it undervalued and suggesting it needed “urgent change” to “reverse the sharp share price decline caused by the company’s misguided strategic priorities.”

What will happen to Vyleesi?

In last month’s statement, AMAG referenced interest in Intrarosa and Vyleesi. ‘The Company has received preliminary expressions of interest to acquire/sub-license the rights to these products,’ it said.

Heiden added: “The Company is seeking a transaction with a party that can make the investments necessary to maximize the value of these two important women’s healthcare products.”

Most recently, Palatin, the pharmaceutical company that exclusively licenses Vyleesi to AMAG for North America, has said it will ensure the next owner is “committed to the robust commercialization of the product”.

Conversations about women’s sexual health are important. And some medical professionals applauded the FDA approval of Vyleesi at least for recognizing and prioritizing women’s sexual health. 

The sell-off prompts discussion about Vyleesi, and women’s sexual health in general, inviting new buyer perspectives on a drug for which the jury is still out and reigniting the debate about the medication of women’s complicated libido patterns.

It’s Valentine’s Day. But instead of cramping into an overpriced restaurant, I am at London’s trendy Libreria bookstore, where a bar and DJ booth have been set up, and sex toys are on display.

The sex toys have been selected by the School of Digital Age (Soda), to launch the company’s move into the sex tech space.

Soda was founded in September 2017 by Grace Gould. It curates and sells tech products. Having worked in consumer electronics manufacturing, Apple retail and start up venture capital, Gould saw a gap in the market in the way technology is marketed to women.

“When women shop for anything else we get an amazing online offer, retail experience and assortment of products,” she says.

“Except in consumer electronics where you either have Apple stores, which are nice but sell you about two things, or Dixons Carphone dodgy carpet experience. You can’t sell sex toys in either of those.”

She adds 83% of purchasing decisions are made by women, which if attributed to the $2.7 trillion technology industry, would be significant. “Male investors ask if women shopping tech is a big enough market, um yea those numbers are pretty big actually.”

Big name brands making an appearance

Soda launched online at sodasays.co.uk and offline at Selfridges, and now has around 70% female customer base. So the company teamed up with blogger Natalie Lee to curate a sex tech collection for women.

It includes Smile Maker’s The Tennis Coach (£39 on Soda), a 100% phthalate-free G-spot vibrator with four speeds and two pulsation modes; and The Fireman (£39), a silent clitoral stimulator with a flame-shaped head that is raised at the tip for greater pressure. This also has four speeds and two pulses.

There is also Unbound’s The Bean (£29), an egg-shaped clitoral stimulator with six vibration settings; Lelo’s Ora 2 (£145), a ring-shaped clitoral stimulator with SenseTouch technology;

MysteryVibe’s 12-setting moldable, music-syncing Crescendo (£129); and Dame Products’ Fin (£70), a small three-speed vibrator, the first Kickstarter let on its platform.   

“We had a conversation with Natalie about sex tech and how she wants to be much more open about female pleasure and masturbation, especially with her kids,” Gould said.

“Teenage girls have all this shame around masturbating and female pleasure, and it’s socially constructed. You don’t get STIs, you don’t get put in experiences with men you might not feel comfortable with at a young age, it’s just a really great thing to have a conversation with.”

Soda sent Lee a ‘hamper basket full of vibrators’ to test and the selection was born. “Valentines’ Day was a good time to launch it, so you can focus on yourself rather than getting some uncomfortable underwear you’re never going to wear,” Gould said.

Going mainstream

The bookstore is packed all evening with people testing out, and a large majority Instagramming, the toys. Soda does appear to be playing its part in bringing sex tech to the mainstream.

“We made the decision to put sex tech on the front page of our website,” Gould said.

“There’s no ‘are you over 18?, we’re not saying ‘Soda After Dark’, and our whole mailing list receives our sex tech newsletter.”

In Selfridges, Soda sells The Bean in the technology section, rather than in the store’s more discrete Body Studio.

“The majority of customers in the technology section are men but we appeal to a new customer base within that section,” Gould said.

“I know we would not get sign off on a big phallic-shaped dildo in that section but pushing boundaries is hard and change is not going to happen overnight.”

Paris-based lab says personalization is key to success in the industry.

Dorcel Lab is the latest innovation from Marc Dorcel, a pioneer in producing and distributing adult video on demand and virtual reality content. The first of its kind, the lab aims to help sex tech startups in France and around the world grow their businesses.

Launched in May 2017, Dorcel Lab has five startups under its wing for a six-month trial period. Many of them were chosen for their focus on personalization, the tailoring of products and services to individuals.  

“What we want is to increase the pleasure experience and innovate in how we experience pleasure,” says Dimitri Ducourtieux, a manager at Dorcel Lab. “Pleasure is one of the more personal things so we strongly believe personalization is the key factor for our industry.”

Ducourtieux hopes that, just as Amazon recommends similar items to customers while shopping, so too will sex tech better learn the personal tastes of users.

The first incubated business is an in-house project, which Ducourtieux describes as “like a national contest in France”. The second, Voulez-vous, is developing personalized movies; the third, Your Lovebox, creates packaging for sex toys to be distributed in hotel rooms; and the fourth is an online marketplace for adult content. The fifth is an uncensored social network called Uplust, in which Marc Dorcel has invested €150,000 and taken a minority stake.

Three-stage acceleration

In the first year of its launch, Dorcel Lab had more than 50 applicants, each one with different needs. Some needed funding, others company’s required management and organizational structure. Startups can draw on the expertise of business owners in the wider Marc Dorcel company.

“That is why we have a three-stage programme,” Ducourtieux says. “The first stage is we give the companies access to our content, network, and tools to help them build a product on top of our existing assets. The second is incubation, so we offer them hosting and mentoring, and the third is funding.”

Who should apply?

Hugues Mariton, chief operating officer at Marc Dorcel, agrees with the importance of personalization in sex tech’s future. He adds: “We don’t want technology for technology’s sake. Companies should have user experience in mind over technology.”

Ducourtieux and Mariton say they are on the lookout for companies innovating in AR and VR, and those working with data.

Their advice to companies is not to apply in the very early stages of starting up. “Some companies have come to us with just an idea,” Ducourtieux says. “They need a business plan, sometimes even a product for us to help them with funding, or help them find more people or increase their content production to improve their revenues.”

Funding for sex tech in France faces the same challenges as elsewhere in the world.

“Banks don’t want to open an account for sextech startups, there are few processors for online payments so it is hard to have global access to the market, and it’s hard to pitch venture capitalists with an adult industry business model,” Ducourtieux says.

This is where Dorcel Lab comes in. And with big plans for the year ahead, it seems the lab could be just what sex tech startups are looking for.

CEO Toon Timmermans reports a 500% jump in revenue over the last year. 

It has been a busy year for Kiiroo. The Amsterdam-based company released the interactive stroker the Launch with US partner Fleshlight in March. In the following months, it rolled out the second versions of its flagship products, the Onyx and the Pearl.

And then last month, Kiiroo announced a new partnership with US sex tech company OhMiBod. This culminated in the unveiling of Fuse, a dual-stimulation touch-sensitive female vibrator containing two interior motors and an exterior LED light.

Fuse is the latest interactive sex toy to demonstrate the company’s knack for successful collaborations within the industry. It also showcases Kiiroo CEO Toon Timmermans’s desire to fill the gap between video content and sex toy manufacturing.

Fusing content

In addition to being a haptic companion to the male sex toy the Launch [NSFW], Fuse was created with the webcam industry in mind. Having opened up its technology to content companies, such as BaDoinkVR, as well as other sex toy companies, Kiiroo has ensured Fuse is compatible with webcam platforms. Once set up for a live show, the device will respond to tips by having its LED lights change color.

Making Kiiroo’s technology compatible with adult content has also been part Timmermans’s vision. “We thought, we could go the Apple way and control a completely closed system, or we could go the Android way and share our knowledge,” he said. “We are becoming the Android system for the adult industry.”

Like Android, which has benefitted from the superior phone designs of Samsung and LG, Timmermans’s decision was not wholly altruistic. It has facilitated partnerships with Fleshlight [NSFW], OhMiBod, and most recently COTR in a move to make the Cowgirl riding-style sex saddle interactive and support cam show tipping. All combined, these ventures have aided Kiiroo’s growth and access to the market.

Yet the company’s products have also been criticized. For example, the clunkiness and noisiness of the original Onyx were addressed in the development of the Onyx2, which is much smaller and quieter.

Timmermans himself admits Kiiroo is “not the best toy manufacturer or designer.” And this is where partnerships with leading male and female sex tech designers have been beneficial.

“Fleshlight knows how to build a manual male toy and OhMiBod knows how to design great female toys,” Timmermans said. “Together with OhMiBod we designed what is in my opinion one of the most beautiful vibrators.”

A grower, not a shower

The benefits are clearly seen in the growth of the business itself. When Future of Sex spoke to Timmermans in 2014, Kiiroo was just a year old and comprised four or five people.

Three years later, the company employs around 25 people, including nine developers. Last month it moved to new offices on the top floor of Amsterdam’s Mondriaan Toren skyscraper, giving the company a more corporate feel. And significantly, over the past year, Kiiroo has grown its revenue by almost 500%.

The company has also swept up several awards in its time. Currently, sales director Frank Kok and Timmermans are nominated in the 2018 XBIZ Exec Awards taking place from January 15 to 19 next year.

“The biggest challenge has been to keep up with this growth,” Timmermans said. “And in the past, we’ve had more ideas than capacity to develop.”

Undeterred, Kiiroo is soldiering on, and Timmermans hints at another product in development.

“We don’t know if it will be the Pearl3 or a whole new device. Maybe it will be a partner device with one of the biggest female toy companies, but there will be a phenomenal new device using cutting-edge technology,” he said.

“Technology is going in an interactive direction, it can’t be avoided. Over the next three years, we will keep doing what we are doing: creating the best technology and bridging the gap between the toy industry and the content industry.”
