Loretta Chao
Loretta is an award-winning journalist who brings 18 years of experience in newspapers, digital media, and technology to her work with people and organizations making a positive impact.
She is currently VP, Strategy & Startups, at the American Journalism Project, working to incubate and launch innovative and sustainable local news solutions.
Loretta joined AJP from VICE Media, where she was director of strategy and operations and oversaw editorial strategy for the company’s first direct-to-consumer subscription product. She also worked on programming for VICE’s experiential business, and execution of new initiatives including its first major live streaming news production.
Prior to VICE, Loretta was director of international corporate affairs at e-commerce giant JD.com. Before that, she was at The Wall Street Journal for almost 12 years and was a foreign correspondent in Brazil and China where she won awards for her business and technology coverage.

Loretta is an advocate for media literacy, newsroom diversity, and more objective coverage of human sexuality. She has written a couple of articles for Future of Sex in 2017 – covering mind-controlled sex toys and 3D printed genitals for blind students.
