I wasn’t yet over my visit to the famous Red Light District in Amsterdam when I stumbled on news of Claudia, an AI-generated adult entertainer. 

As reported by the Washington Post, the computer-generated performer is offering alluring images of herself to her many followers on Reddit. 

Meanwhile, Berlin’s Cybrothel is using a mixture of virtual reality and sexbots like the Chinese Kokeshi to entertain its patrons.

All you have to do is put on a set of goggles, enter a private room, and see her come to life before your very eyes. Besides Kokeshi, it offers similar experiences with other models like Haito, a Japanese Manga nerd, Mistress Oxana, an older doll with a dark side, or Paris, a blonde bombshell.

There’s also the male-appearing Ken Guy Ryder, a sultry, blue-eyed bisexual who says he loves to dance and listen to whoever wants to listen.

All this got me thinking: with these and other technologies currently under development, is it just a mere time before flesh and blood erotic entertainers and sex workers are replaced by synthetic versions of themselves? 

Sexbots will complement human sex workers

One scenario to consider is that technology may not replace human sex workers but rather complement them, as in the use of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality experiences, as well as smart sex toys able to interact with the user.

In this case, AI might enhance the intimacy and pleasure of sex work in addition to providing improved safety and privacy for both sex workers as well as their clients. 

For example, sex workers might use AI to create digital avatars or personas to promote their services online or via VR/AR platforms. 

As Dr. Kate Devlin, a senior lecturer in social and cultural artificial intelligence at King’s College London, says in her book Turned On, “This could open up new markets and opportunities for sex work. It will reduce some of the stigma and discrimination that sex workers face in some societies.” 

Furthermore, AI could help sex workers manage their schedules, thus optimizing their businesses. Advanced algorithms may also help them analyze data, such as their availability and client preferences, to suggest optimal bookings and travel routes. Their enhanced productivity would then allow sex workers to focus more on providing quality experiences to their clients.

AI will partially replace human sex workers 

Another possibility is AI partially replacing sex workers, but not completely by the creation of more advanced and realistic sexbots capable of mimicking human emotions, expressions, and behaviors. 

In this case, this technology could be heaven-sent for digisexuals who prefer a more physical and tactile interaction as they’ll be able to customize their AI sex partners to match their unique preferences.

AI will empower sex workers

Rather than being supplanted, sex workers’ lives might be supported or even improved by technology tools. For example, algorithms might be utilized to ensure their safety by verifying clients through facial recognition or background checks, providing an extra layer of security.

Additionally, AI might aid in their marketing and advertising efforts. 

Machine learning programs could effectively analyze user behavior and preferences to help them target specific audiences, leading to increased potential client engagement.

“AI can help people in my sector to not navigate “draconian” laws in various jurisdictions worldwide but also get more clients,” Sharon Jennings, the manager of the Sex Industry Network based in South Australia, told the Guardian,

“It’s very exciting to think about the potential,” she added, “it would also allow sex workers access to clients in places where anonymity is limited. People can progressively operate as sex workers even in their bedrooms, without other family members knowing.” 

Artificial sex workers will fall short of replicating human sex workers

While technology might enhance certain aspects of the commercial sex industry, it needs to catch up in replicating the nuanced human connection that is often essential to the profession. 

While Jennings recognizes the potential for artificial sex workers, she dismisses the notion they’d be eventually put out of work, saying, “Some people want more than just sex from sex workers; they want to be held and touched.” 

Striking a balance

Sexbots may offer certain advantages over human sex workers, like the ability to be customized and programmed to suit their user’s needs. Still, they also could help reduce the risk of violence and exploitation and reduce the stigma many sex workers continue to face.

Though sexbots may not be able to replace human sex workers completely, they can go a long way in helping enhance sexual experiences for digisexuals. 

By harnessing the power of AI while keeping the human element in mind, I see a bright future for both human sex workers and AI sex dolls.

Sex beyond biology—no humans, no problem?

With the rise of AI and the development of increasingly sophisticated artificial companions, it’s easy to speculate that intimate and sexual experiences could someday be entirely replaced by technology.

Is this something we need to worry about, or will sexual interactions be better than ever? A report titled “The Rise of the Robosexuals,” co-authored by futurist Ian Pearson and Internet sex shop Bondara, suggests virtual reality sex will be very common in 2030, and approximately 20 years later, many people will be having sex with fully autonomous companions—adding robot sex will not harm human intimacy but enhance it. 

Advancements in AI research

Artificial intelligence researchers have made significant strides in recent years, now utilized by a wide variety of industries, with the sex tech industry being no exception.

According to Simon Dubea human, a sexuality researcher specializing in human sexuality, sex tech, and Erobotics, “New possibilities for human-robot relationships are emerging. It’s the wild west, as companies experiment and market new types of “experiences.”

Adding that “Artificial companions are not just about sex, but about what humans want from their relationships, their partners, and themselves. Sex robots are a reflection of human desires, fantasies, and needs, as well as a source of pleasure, companionship, and comfort.” 

Artificial companions: realistic alternatives or substitutes? 

A product of the intersection between AI, robotics, and the human desire for more intimate and satisfying experiences, sexbots produced by companies such as AI aitech and Sinthetics are continually developing progressively more and more lifelike models.  

Meanwhile, other manufacturers are fitting their products with sensors, enabling them to respond to touch as well as verbal instructions. The Realbotix project, for example, is now selling an AI-equipped head that can be attached to RealDoll bodies. 

They’ve also developed the RealDollX app, which lets you create a personality that can be integrated into their Harmony head. 

Advantages and drawbacks

As we delve deeper into the possibility of a world without physical sexual interactions, it’s worth considering the benefits and drawbacks of artificial companions. Regarding the pros, personalization could be one of their main advantages. Also, sexbots, especially for those who may have undergone trauma or have unique disability needs, might offer a safe and non-judgmental way to fulfill their sexual needs.

On the other side of the coin, we might have to deal with objectification. The creation and usage of sex robots may make women and other oppressed groups feel even more objectified and dehumanized. 

However, Aimee van Wynsberghe, co-director of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics, argues that sexbots might do the complete opposite, saying, “You could think about people who feel uncomfortable going to a prostitute because they’re putting another human being in that position, A robot will be more desirable for them.”

Similarly, Dr. David Levy, an artificial intelligence researcher and the author of Love and Sex with Robots, argues in the book that “artificial adult companions can foster emotional attachment rather than detachment and that they can complement and enrich human-human relationships.”

Further stating, “Artificial adult companions are designed to provide companionship, intimacy, and support to their users, who may otherwise feel lonely, isolated, or rejected. Artificial adult companions can help users cope with stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma by offering a safe and non-judgmental space to express their feelings and needs.” 

The role of human connection and emotional intimacy

We’re also in the middle of a massive sextech revolution, like the growing popularity of erotic virtual reality games.

It could be made all the better when haptic technology goes mainstream, allowing us to enjoy remote physical, long-distance sex, or fully immersive sexual experiences. 

Looking farther forward, there might come a time when holograms or brain-to-brain interfaces, which also could directly stimulate our brain’s pleasure centers, become the norm.

While many of these innovations are still a long way off, the rise of a new, digital-driven sexual identity, digisexuality, shows how much technology is also adding to our desires and sex lives.

Technology is already changing how people have physical sexual interactions, so it’s just a matter of time before we see sexbots capable of utilizing artificial intelligence and other technologies to give us previously unheard-of sexual experiences.

How machine learning could break barriers, empower identities, and redefine societal norms

“Being in a wheelchair, one of the questions I’m often asked is whether I can have sex,” writes Sarah Alexander, a differently-abled journalist. “This forbidden juxtaposition of disability and sex is all too familiar, and we really need to start opening up the conversation and breaking boundaries.” 

I agree with her. Sometimes, our bodies aren’t going to fit together in a way that makes sex possible. Our energy levels, physical limitations, or pain make some sexual activities or positions unenjoyable or practically impossible.

For those with disabilities, sexuality can be a challenging and stigmatized topic due to the lack of education, information, and support from society. Moreover, people with disabilities often face barriers and discrimination in expressing and exploring their sexual identities. 

Fortunately, artificial intelligence might offer potential solutions and possibilities for people with disabilities to explore sexual pleasure and intimacy in safe and more pleasurable ways.

“Human-AI powered robot relationships can be harnessed to create more holistic lives and provide dignity to individuals who do not have access to human companionship.” wrote Nancy S. Jecker, Ph.D., in the Journal of Medical Ethics. 

Sex ed for all

One example of how AI could assist is by providing us with accessible and comprehensive sexuality education. 

Research published by the American Psychological Association shows young adults and adolescents with ID know much less about sex than their non-disabled peers. “Educators are thinking more about [disabled] students’ physical needs. They don’t see them as being sexual people with sexual needs and desires. They don’t see them as wanting relationships,” Kehau Gunderson, lead trainer and senior health educator, told Teen Vogue.

Lack of knowledge can lead to increased risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexual abuse, and low self-esteem. Therefore, it is important to provide people with ID with accurate and relevant information about sex and skills and strategies in order to help protect themselves and make informed decisions.

AI could assist in this by generating user-specific and adaptive learning materials best to suit the needs and preferences of each learner. For example, AI might use natural language processing (NLP) to generate text or speech that is far easier to understand for those with ID. 

Additionally, AI could generate informative visual aids to illustrate concepts or scenarios related to sexual health and pleasure.

Exploring positive sexuality

Another example of how AI could aid people with ID is by allowing them to explore their sexuality and identity in a positive and supportive environment. 

A Taylor & Francis Online editorial put it well, stating, “Sexuality is not only about physical acts or biological functions, but also about emotions, feelings, desires, fantasies, values, and identities. People with ID have the same rights and needs as anyone else to express and explore their sexuality and identity in meaningful and satisfying ways.”

Adding, “However, they often face obstacles and limitations in doing so, such as lack of privacy, autonomy, choice, or access to resources. AI can overcome some of these challenges by creating virtual or augmented reality platforms that allow people with ID to interact with others or themselves in a safe and respectful manner.”

For example, AI might use natural language generation (NLG) to create realistic and diverse characters or avatars to aid in communicating with people with ID.

Not to mention how AI might be employed to enable people with disabilities to communicate and connect with others who share their interests, values, and goals. 

For instance, AI might use machine learning and recommender systems to match users with potential partners or friends based on their profiles, preferences, and compatibility.

Access to sexual pleasure and intimacy

Another example of how AI might support people with ID is by facilitating their access to sexual pleasure and intimacy. 

Research conducted by Adam Poulsen, School of Computing and Mathematics, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Australia, suggests that sexual pleasure and intimacy are essential components of human well-being and happiness, which can improve one’s physical and mental health. 

Look no further than how Amber, a sexbot companion, might use its unique features to make work with and not against a person’s disability.

Case in point, disabled people who might be physically frail might use its ability to massage, vibrate, or gently thrust to make sex more comfortable and satisfying.

Likewise, AI might utilize haptic feedback and biometric sensor technology in order to build customized smart sex toys or chatbots able to adapt to the user’s arousal level, preferences, and physical or emotional concerns. 

Then, there’s the idea of using AI to produce ultra-realistic and thoroughly personalized erotic content to the user’s fantasies and desires.

These are merely some of the ways AI might benefit people with disabilities to explore their sexuality and identity. 

As you can see, AI can empower people with disabilities to have more control over their sexuality. It can help people get more information about their sexuality, help them explore their sexuality positively, and provide access to enhanced sexual pleasure and intimacy.

New technologies may help overcome any awkwardness tied to talking about sex in marriage. 

In the television series “Black Mirror,” a married man has sex with a friend while playing a virtual reality game. The two argue about whether the encounter was cheating as the true-to-life technology made them feel like they were really stroking each other.

Although the situation described above is entirely fictitious, it is no longer fiction because of the metaverse, a parallel digital universe driven by virtual reality (VR) technology.

The metaverse is an online environment where people may socialize, work, and even date or have sex using avatars. In essence, people will be able to live virtual parallel lives in virtual surroundings that may merge with the physical world in the metaverse.

Though the metaverse is yet to take off fully, people are already seeing its potential. Couples are holding “Meta-Marriage” events and finalizing their virtual ceremony with smart contracts.

Now, in most traditional marriages, as couples start spending more and more time together, lovemaking seems more like a chore on a to-do list than a pursuit of pleasure. 

Will the same apply in the metaverse world?

What the experts say

“Porn in the metaverse will be more engaging and interactive, with the bonus of not being constricted to real-world physics,” Ela Darling, VR porn entrepreneur and marketing director at VIRO Playspace, told Let’s Eat Cake. The same can be said for intimacy.

Sex tech researcher Bryony Cole also agrees that the metaverse can offer new opportunities to overcome any awkwardness tied to talking or learning more about sex in marriage. 

“I believe there is a great potential for sex education and sexual health support in the metaverse,” Cole said, also to Let’s Eat Cake.

“Because the topic of sex is still so stigmatized, the combined anonymity and intimacy of virtual worlds makes it an ideal platform for education and health topics to thrive.”

Instead of going to a sex therapist in person, for instance, a user could visit an online facility in the metaverse. In this virtual setting, they may feel more comfortable talking about their desires or what they want their sex life to be like. The same goes for sexual health classes or workshops eventually leading to healthy and enjoyable sex life.

Digital identities enable a new form of intimacy

With the metaverse, instead of having video calls to communicate or being physically present in order to have sex, couples can connect through their avatars.

I believe this has the potential to change how people get intimate.

Since VHS cassettes, the sex market has been pushing technical advancements. The increasing technology and capacity for fantasies in the metaverse will create a setting for not just Dreamcam users, but also sexually-interested folks to experience new things.

This might be beneficial for anyone self-conscious about their appearance during sex. People in long-distance relationships may have more sex in the metaverse than in real life to maintain their physical connection.

The metaverse is also ripe for forming different kinds of relationships.

The first “Meta-Marriage” event in the United States took place in February via Decentraland, a 3D virtual browser-based platform.

The Rose Law Group hosted the Decentraland wedding renewal ceremony, which drew almost 2,000 virtual guests in honor of the couple’s 14th wedding anniversary. The ceremony included Non-Fungible Token (NFT) wedding favors, a special virtual setting, and a virtual prenuptial agreement. There was also a “Metaverse Marriage License” recorded as an NFT and the couple’s virtual identities were registered on the blockchain.

Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick officiated at the first-of-its-kind vow renewal ceremony.

2022 has been a milestone for metaverse marriages

Another metaverse wedding took place on February 22, when an Indian couple got married and became India’s first couple to marry via the metaverse.

They used YUG Metaverse, an Indian metaverse platform. The attendees were given their avatars and convened at a virtual seaside site. The good thing about the Metaverse is that you can invite all your friends worldwide.

Meanwhile, oral care brand Closeup recently created the world’s first NFT marriage license, allowing couples to marry in the metaverse. The Closeup City Hall of Love is an immersive virtual experience where various couples can mint their NFT marriage certificate and eternally idealize their love on the blockchain.

In Closeup City Hall of Love, participants can engage with their wedding officiant, create avatars or explore the environment. The events will begin with a proposal and conclude with the minting of the NFT certificate, which will be celebrated with friends and family.

Metaverse weddings can make your dream event more accessible

Unlike the real world, the metaverse doesn’t have physical constraints that limit your fantasy wedding. The metaverse is the only location where your most outlandish and inventive wedding desires can come true.

Consider guest lists in the thousands or gift registries that use NFTs. Perhaps there will be destination weddings in space. Are these metaverse marriages legal?

Although some claim that the NFT marriage certificates are not legally binding and have no basis in law, the experience is nevertheless important to certain couples. 

Many couples are still denied the opportunity to marry, depending on where in the world they are. These include intercaste, interracial, interfaith, and same-gender partnerships.

It is critical that we mainstream these types of partnerships in all corners of society. Metaverse marriages can lead this initiative.

These metaverse marriages will inspire lovers, generate dialogues, and eventually lead the way for change toward a future where the right to marry is equitable for everyone.

Unions or associations once unimaginable between people of the same gender or different races are now sanctioned by the government. 

Similarly, those not ready to marry can plan sexual escapades that were unthinkable 100 years ago, using applications invented in the last several years. That is how fast the world of sex is changing.

Various kinds of intimacy

Over the next few years, various ideas, including humanity, will continue to be redefined. 

Marriage will evolve into various kinds of intimacy, gender will change its meaning, and self-fulfillment in terms of sex will change so as to suit different tastes and improve human relationships. 

This includes bringing robots into our emotional and social life. 

We will see a shift in how people make intimate bonds and form families. State-of-the-art tech for bed-hopping and new ways to settle down will be common.

Embracing our counterparts

Robot relationships are not fake, exploitative, or kinky. Actually, they give human relationships and wellness a vital boost. 

On the other hand, critics claim that dating robots is illusory and fake, just perceptual notions imposed on us by profit-driven companies. They do not see how robots will represent real people, especially women, and the consequences of their use in society.

Well, while I believe these concerns hold some water, they are lagging behind when it comes to the new look and capabilities of “Casey.” They also overemphasize the downsides and then overlook how robots could enhance or complement existing human relationships.
