For most people, the idea of interacting with a hologram still feels a lot like science fiction. But some companies are already pushing the envelope further, enabling users not only to see but actually feel 3D holographic projections as they’re beamed in real time.

PrimaVR [NSFW] has been working with adult hologram videos since 2015. Earlier this year, the team released the first version of its haptic holographic video player.

It enabled users to feel that haptic feedback through vibrations delivered by virtual reality controllers. The videos also reacted to the user’s touch; pushing against the hologram actress’ body displaced the virtual soft tissue, while a gentle slap resulted in what they described as a “visually pleasant jiggle.”

The company has since been making improvements and adding new features to the platform, such as a “virtual heartbeat” that can be felt when the user holds the VR controller against the hologram actor.

Holograms vs 360 video

The main difference between this holographic platform and the type of 360 videos that are becoming rather pervasive in VR porn, for example, is that 360 tends to restrict viewers to one PoV (Point of View) while holograms allow your head to move around much more freely, explains Anton Bailey, a PrimaVR spokesperson

Like the introduction of smells into the virtual experience, such features might seem a bit on the gimmicky side. However, it all adds to the immersive nature of the VR experience, while also helping to push the boundaries of the technology and envisage what might be possible in future, said Bailey.

“We love to focus on experimenting with crazy VR tech and be the first to introduce new features in adult VR entertainment,” he added. Such features play a crucial role in increasing the levels of responsiveness and interaction within VR experiences. This not only makes them more fun but also more engaging. Otherwise, we risk what’s sometimes called the “Swayze effect”—which refers to the passive feeling a user can get of just floating through a video.

Bailey concedes that most, if not all, of the current Internet-connected teledildonic devices are indeed rather gimmicky and not very widely used.

“Even though odors can trigger strong memories and create an emotional response, smell cartridges and olfactory output will probably have lesser importance for a majority of people. VR will need to be adopted by the masses before a VR compatible teledildonic peripheral, a ‘VR Fleshlight,’ can become a hit,” he said.

Bringing your body into the scene

In the earlier demo, PrimaVR introduced the possibility for users to bring their own body into the hologram video by using the Leap Motion device. The team has since enhanced this feature by enabling those users to also alter their avatars’ skin color, accommodating a wider range of ethnicities so they can experience a closer representation of their own body in virtual reality and/or enhance roleplaying possibilities.

The next step, however, is to make those representations more realistic and seamless, which is why the platform is also working on updating the tech to increase the resolution and video frame rate by the end of the summer.

This type of technology, according to Bailey, brings with it real possibilities for improving people’s sex lives.
“The possibility of modifying your avatar’s look and sound adds another layer of emotional protection alongside physical distance, which enables more adventurous experimentation,” he explained.

He also pointed to the sheer quantity and variety of cybersex in early VR platforms like Second Life as an indicator of how adult content will be crucial in driving wider adoption of the technology:

“Facebook is betting heavily on social VR, and telepresence is surely one of the more important applications of VR. Together with teledildonics, it opens up new possibilities for cybersex, whether conducted by complete strangers or couples in a long distance relationship.”

Bailey speculates that in a more distant future, where people will spend more time in online virtual worlds, VR technology will allow people to experiment with different genders and identities in a social context.

“Perhaps some of the experimentation performed in the safety of a virtual world can carry over into the real world. Whether this will lead to a more loose self-identification is a good question. At the very least VR technology opens a door for increasing social harmony by allowing people to experience life from other people’s point of view,” he said.

“What Women Want” is the newest installment in BaDoinkVR’s Virtual Sexology series which–as the name suggests, is designed specifically with the female user in mind. This is a virtual reality experience for sex education and therapy. It aims to bridge the gap between education and entertainment and help women enhance sexual pleasure and performance, both solo and with their partners.

The idea, explains Dinorah Hernandez, Director at BaDoinkVR [NSFW], was to provide a much more hands-on approach to discovering female sexual empowerment: “We’re striving to appeal to a large demographic of women that have been widely ignored by the adult industry, as we recognized that women tend to have different a mindset compared to men when it comes to adult VR,” she said.

Free VR sex therapy—with a gift!

Not only is the experience itself free to download, but BaDoinkVR is also giving away free companion sex toys to the first 10,000 women who request them on the site. The experience was designed “by women and for women,” with input from experts in the field such as AASECT certified sex therapist Dr. Holly Richmond, PhD, who helped to develop the content and exercises featured.

Richmond is a somatic psychologist who works with women, men, and couples on relationship and sexuality issues. She uses somatic (body-based) principles to help uncover subconscious issues that contribute to clients’ primary concerns.

Her treatment specialties include low and absent libido, desire discrepancies in couples, compulsivity issues with sex and pornography, recovery from sexual assault and abuse, alternative sexual lifestyles, and those working or who have worked in the adult industry.

Focusing on women’s sexual mindset

In her practice, she discovered that the issues that men and women present are–perhaps not surprisingly–often incredibly different.

“The number one complaint I hear from my female clients is issues with desire—they want to want and they want to be wanted. Often in relationships, this specific aspect of desire can fade. Unlike men where desire either precedes arousal or happens in conjunction with it, often arousal needs to come before desire for women. I offer a range of somatic, cognitive and emotional exercises and daily practices to address these issues,” she said.

“I place equal importance on the body and the mind in my practice; With sex, this is of utmost importance and VR gives us an even more direct channel to somatic manifestations of pleasure and sexual wellness,” Richmond added.

“Virtual Sexology is a progressive concept that offers a wide-variety of positive sexual health applications in an informative and entertaining way. Women’s desire and arousal are unique to men’s and extremely varied, so our approach with this endeavor was to explore not only what women want, but also how they want it.”

BaDoinkVR’s Virtual Sexology II promises to leverage those techniques to dive deep into the feminine process of arousal and desire, aided by a “suite of next-generation sex toys that aim to augment sexual activity and help women discover their pleasure zones.”

Now, since I do get pitched a lot of cutting-edge sex tech products, I’m very spoilt where it comes to sex toys. Which means that in all fairness I must point out that the Trinity Peanut Bullet Vibe one-touch control model offered is certainly not on the same league as the beautifully designed and tactile products from, say Dame or Miss on the Go. But, hey, it does the job, and gift horses and all that… As BaDoink says, “the motor may be small, but it packs enough to satisfy.”

What’s next for sex?

“I got involved with this project because I am working on a book about the future of sex, or more specifically, asking the question, ‘What’s next for sex?’” Dr. Richmond explains. “A large portion of the book will investigate VR porn and its positive clinical applications for sexual health. Of course I found BaDoink when I was researching industry leaders and reached out to them. After reviewing Virtual Sexology I, I was very curious about how the overall idea (combining education and entertainment) could translate for women’s sexual health in particular.”

“It would be great if we could bring female desire and pleasure out of the shadows, give it some light and offer solutions. Virtual Sexology II was written from a place of deep commitment to my clients, as well as wanting to help women in general get in touch with what they want, what they like, what they need. This is an exceptionally immersive way to help women conceptualize and feel good about their desire, and have the practical, hands-on tools to get it,” added Richmond.

Sure, it functions as a straightforward vibrator, but it also connects to a mobile app which turns it into a teledildonics device.

There’s a plethora of sex toys out there, but as far as I can tell the Miss on the Go (MOTG) is in a hybrid category of its own. Sure, it functions as a straightforward vibrator, but it also connects to a mobile app which turns it into a teledildonics device. Then it effortlessly doubles up as a wearable Kegel exerciser that helps women locate their pelvic muscles, while pleasuring them at the same time.

I put it to Véronique Verreault–the company’s Founder and CEO–that this seems like a classic case of having your cake and eating it too, and she laughs in agreement. “Why not?” she asks.

Breaking into the sex wearables market

Verreault’s quest to create the ultimate sexual wellness wearable began while she was studying management at university in 2014.

She was looking for an outlet for her “entrepreneurial fire,” as she puts it, and kept coming back to the idea of working with sex toys–which helped her get to know and feel happy with her body ever since she was a teenager. At first, however, the size of the industry and the taboo around it felt rather intimidating.

In the end, her Eureka moment was inspired by the way she was able to do her favorite Kegel exercises discreetly, wherever she was:

“I had been regularly practicing those exercises, wearing my Ben Wa balls for many years, and absolutely loved it. I wore them when I went to work, while cleaning the house, you name it!” she recalls, saying she often tried to get her curious friends to try it out too.

“’Don’t wait to have urinary incontinence, Darling!’ I was telling them about the benefits during sex, as you know… but not enough women do it. Then one day, I was sexting with my Kegel and I said that’s it. I thought ‘I need to create something.’”

That something turned out to be not only a sex toy and workout tool, but a connected app that made using the device a fun and social experience, turning your phone into a sort of sexual personal assistant. To do that, she not only had to not secure investment and get her head around the complex logistics of running a tech startup. She also had to overcome some considerable technical challenges.

“I wanted quality and we needed to start over and over to make sure it was meeting my expectations,” she recalls. “The Bluetooth antenna which hangs from the device needed a reliable connection, which is difficult when you throw things like water and metal into the mix. We needed to find a solution that was safe for the body and resistant enough for all the ladies out there to give it a proper workout.”

Strong is sexy

The main message she wants her product to convey is that confidence is incredibly sexy: “It’s not the short skirt or high heels that makes you sexy. It’s your attitude; your swag. You can have jogging pants a ponytail and rock this grocery shopping! It’s the same with sex. Trust yourself, respect your body but don’t be shy about using sex toys to explore what feels good and have a healthy sex life,” she advises.

It is appropriate, therefore, that the workout section in the MOTG app is called “Strong is the new Sexy.” It guides women through their Kegel exercises, with 10 cycles of 10 seconds each (5 seconds contraction with medium vibration, 5 seconds releasing contraction). Consistency is key, as the aim is to make women feel comfortable with the exercise, and contract without even noticing.

After downloading the app, users create a free account by choosing a username and password. Connecting the device is a matter of turning it on and enabling Bluetooth on your phone to pair them, just as you would with a fitness band or pair of wireless headphones. The first time you use the app with the device you will also need to go into the settings to connect them, but overall it’s a very intuitive user interface that makes the process straightforward.

In addition to the workouts, the app can also be used purely for fun, letting you either control it yourself by with the “My Own Pleasure” option, or handing over that control to other users, wherever they are in the world.

The woman has full control over the experience at all times, as she sends out an invitation either to a specific person with the “I know who I want” option–this could be an existing partner who is traveling, for example —or to a complete stranger with the “mystery game.” The latter allows you to connect with other users based on Tinder-like criteria such as location, age, and preferences.

“The app lets you decide when you want to play. So honey, choose what you want. You want to play alone? Good! You want to play with someone? Good! As long as you’re good with your decision and confident about your choices, you’re good to go!” says Verreault

Sex with strangers? Yes, please!

The fact that your profile remains anonymous not only encourages people–especially women–to experiment more. But it’s also a big turn-on that their research uncovered, which places “stranger fantasy” as one of the top three the most popular amongst women (together with threesomes and lesbian sex).

Once you invite a partner to play and they accept, you can exchange pictures and texts while they control the vibration on the device. The whole experience is rated through a “pleasure bar” which indicates how satisfied the woman is by the interaction. So even though there is no physical stimulation in the bargain for, say, a distance boyfriend, that gamification can lead to some healthy competitive motivation.

The whole experience is rated through a “pleasure bar” that indicates how satisfied the woman is by the interaction. So even though there is no physical stimulation in the bargain for, say, a long-distance boyfriend, that gamification can lead to some healthy competitive motivation.

Keeping sex tech sex-positive

Verreault clearly embodies the whole sex-positive mentality, and is rightfully proud of what she’s achieved in the past three years. With no previous experience in tech, she managed not only to design and ship the MOTG device from scratch, but also develop the accompanying app and social platform, churning out some happy customers in the process.

She’s not resting on her laurels though. While the first version of the app is “fun,” she’s busy recruiting people to help her fulfill a list of improvements, “as long as Santa’s,” based on the extensive feedback from customers so far. And if her determination is anything to go by, it would seem–if you’ll excuse the pun–that the best is indeed yet to come.

Alexandra Fine often says she wants to make the world a happier place, “one vagina at the time.”

But while that might seem like just another take on the Silicon Valley joke, fixing the “pleasure gap” is no laughing matter. Women are four times more likely to describe recent sex as “not at all pleasurable,” and that’s simply not OK anymore.

So it’s no wonder that when Fine—a Master in Clinical Psychology from Columbia who co-founded Dame Products with Janet Lieberman, an MIT-educated mechanical engineer—took its innovative vibrator design to Kickstarter last year, it made nearly eight times its original $50,000 goal.

Crowdfunding landmark

Up to 70% of women need clitoral stimulation to orgasm, and Fin sold itself on an intuitive design that enhanced the natural movements of intimate touching by adding that clitoral stimulation for women to sex between couples.

Almost 5,000 backers signed up before the campaign closed, and more are placing orders on the website every day. So it’s fair to say that Fine and Lieberman have struck quite a chord with the community.

This followed from the huge success of their previous Kickstarter product, Eva (a hands-free, strap-free clitoral vibrator that a woman can wear during sex), which quickly became the most highly funded adult product in the history of online crowdfunding—raising $575,000 in just 45 days.

User-friendly sex toys

The major problem with most sex toys is that they aren’t very user-friendly, explains Fine:

“Until now, this industry has been separated from all others, but we’re consistently driven by the notion that vibrators are tools for sexual wellness and sexual agency. We’d like to make them more approachable.”

Even confident and empowered women who routinely use these devices are often puzzled by them, which means that for the rest of us the experience can feel so intimidating we’re likely to give up on the whole thing.

Sex tech pioneer Cindy Gallop recalls a time when she unboxed one such beautifully presented gadget only to be utterly confounded by it. “I opened the box and found myself thinking, ‘How the fuck do you use this thing?’” she recalls.

Not so with Dame’s offerings. When Fin and the Eva arrived through my letterbox, they gave off a much friendlier vibe—pun intended. The devices are sturdy (made from medical-grade silicon) and come with clear and simple instructions, should you need them. They’re not exactly cheap, but compared to other sex toys they are, in fact, on the affordable side of the scale.

And the fact that they come in a pleasant range of colors, and live in pretty little black satin pouches, make them the sort of thing you might buy for a friend (if they’re a really good friend). The intuitive design and straightforward settings enable a plug-and-play approach, and that’s what felt refreshing.

Simplified design

Because, as it turns out, it’s the simplicity of Dame’s designs that make them so disruptive in the sex tech space. Whereas freaky-looking cumbersome toys send the message that this is something out of the ordinary for most women, Dame is telling you this is the sort of thing every woman should have in their pleasure toolkit.

By making such devices more intuitive and seamless, they demystify the whole concept and make the idea of female pleasure the rule, rather than an exception.

And as those in the know will tell you, making something beautifully simple is actually much more challenging from a design perspective. Lieberman describes how they used 3D printing to iterate quickly, incorporating customer feedback at every stage. In fact, that was one of the reasons they were so keen to crowdfund both projects:

“Turning to crowdfunding is a conscious decision on our part—something we find crucial when designing products like ours. The immediate feedback and constant two-way communication with our customers allows us to gain insight into the industry in a valuable way,” says Fine

Their mission-driven approach toward enhancing natural intimacy is centered around function-first design, as Lieberman explains:

“Our mission is to listen to, study, and ultimately design around women’s real, unmet needs. I spent years engineering top of the line products, but I found myself consistently accepting lower standards when it came to sex toys. We founded Dame Products out of the belief that sex toys should be held to the same standards as any other consumer product.”

Different strokes

Fin is definitely in a class of its own as far as user experience goes. For one, the fact that it’s worn between the fingers makes it really versatile, meaning it’s easy to use in a variety of ways, and the sensations change based simply on where it is worn—tips of the fingers, base of the palm, or even the backside of the fingers.

It fits both women’s and men’s hands, so that the wearer can choose whether to have direct contact with the partner (or themselves) with what level of vibration.

The main fact that this acknowledges is that where it comes to sex, everybody is different, and what works for one person might turn another one off completely. The genius of products like Fin is that they don’t try to tell you what to do, they just give you the chance to enhance the experiences that you would normally find most pleasurable.

Like OMGYes and Make Love Not Porn these devices help to normalize the diversity and complexity of female pleasure. And if that’s not empowering, I don’t know what it.

Swiss-based maker of virtual reality and haptic devices Terpon announced that it has just secured a seven-figure investment—led by Taiwanese private investors and a Silicon Valley veteran—as they prepare to launch a new line of high-resolution 3D-VR Cameras.

The funding will go toward mass-producing those 3D-VR cameras, as well as marketing to support their sizeable ambitions of becoming a household name in VR webcam hardware worldwide.

“The adult industry has always been an early adopter of digital technologies, with many companies cutting their teeth in the space, launching innovative technologies that ultimately breakthrough into the mainstream market–and virtual reality is no different,” says Terpon CEO Jean-Claude Artonne.

While mainstream users are increasingly dabbling in VR, adult entertainment consumers are rather more enthusiastic. Terpon’s strategy is betting that this type of usage will, in fact, serve to bridge that gap between early adopters and mainstream, similar to what happened with VHS and DVDs in the past.

A new model

Instead of selling the expensive equipment, however, Terpon operates a rental model where users can get the latest technology for around $30 per month without a minimum contract. This includes not only 24/7 tech support but also free upgrades every time a newer version of the camera is released.

“Users are no longer chained to a webcam they spent tons of money on. They have the flexibility to exchange their webcams whenever,” explains Artonne.

Although difficult to quantify exactly, various reports indicate that as much as one-third of online adult revenue comes from the live camming industry, which means it’s big (as in multi-billion-dollar big) business.

It is, therefore, no surprise that companies like Terpon are investing so heavily in building a first-mover advantage in this booming market. Their latest batch of 3D-VR webcams is available to pre-order now, but units will not start shipping until April. In the meantime, however, they will give away 1,000 units to the most popular independent cam models in their community, starting this month.

That strategy makes sense since the top 0.1 to 0.2% most popular models reach 60 to 80% of camming users. At that high level, it is an extremely competitive space. So models are very receptive to experimenting with new technology to engage with their viewers better.

Innovating sex tech

The next step for Terpon will be to sell high-quality gear such as VR headsets to users. This will allow them to enjoy immersive content on a deeper level—and not necessarily just pornography. From there, the company plans to leverage its network and website traffic to expand its offerings and sell other (not necessarily proprietary) VR, immersive, and haptic technologies such as teledildonics devices.

“Our 3D-4K high-resolution VR webcams will provide an assortment of benefits that will deliver the ultimate immersive experience. Models will now be able to deliver their content in crisp resolution and users will be able to interact with them and feel as though they are actually in the room with their favorite model. The intimacy level will be unlike anything they’ve ever experienced before and will keep viewers coming back for more.”

Because adult virtual reality experiences are primarily front facing, Terpon’s 3D-VR cameras feature stereoscopic synchronized modules with up to a 200° dynamic field of view and a 360° optional background scan. The cameras stream 2D and 3D video simultaneously and are adapted to cope with very low latency real-time platforms.

The camera—which also features USB plugin stereo microphones optimized for both Mac and PCs—does not require users to install proprietary software as it’s compatible with a range of platforms that already partner with Terpon.

It is clear that investing to make the technology platform-agnostic was also a big strategic priority for the company. Terpon currently provides free tools to record 3D-VR videos in the various standard from rectilinear to equirectangular format compatible with viewing technologies such as YouTube, Facebook, Oculus, HTC Vive, Sony PlayStation VR, and other Apps or HTML5 browser-based viewers that are available on all platforms. That, they feel, will allow the technology greater scope for rapidly scaling up.

“The virtual reality marketplace, especially as it pertains to the adult industry, is ripe for a seismic transition, which we are beginning to experience first-hand. As content transitions away from traditional and toward immersive 3D. We want to become the staple camera all performers use when they broadcast themselves,” says Artonne.

After initial testing, it quickly becomes apparent that there’s a very carefully conceived formula behind OMGYes, and it reads something like this:

Information + Communication + Demonstration = better relationships + orgasms

That ethos permeates every complex layer of this slick and well-researched site. It defines itself as a “sexual pleasure research website” aimed not only at women, but at couples and men as well.

“Approximately half of our users are female and half are male,” says co-founder Lydia Daniller.

“It’s for anyone curious about learning more ways to make a great thing even better. Couples who are constantly exploring ways to make sex more pleasurable are five times more likely to be happier in their relationship and 12 times more likely to be sexually satisfied. Women use the site to explore more ways to touch themselves and guide their partners, while men and partners are adding new, research-based tools to their toolbox.”

Shifting the focus

OMGYES was founded by former housemates, Lydia Daniller and Rob Perkins. The two have been friends for more than 10 years after meeting in college. A lesbian and a straight guy, their conversations about sex led to the realization that in a supposedly progressive society, women’s pleasure was still a huge taboo. Looking at the resources available, they were saddened to find that even academics and scientists hadn’t researched the details.

“There didn’t even seem to be words for the specific things women find pleasurable,” Daniller recalls. What started as a series of interviews grew into a much bigger project as they literally opened up a Pandora’s Box. They found so many women eager to share their stories and insights. Prominent sexologists and researchers were also keen to conduct groundbreaking studies.

Four years later, their San Francisco-based team now includes a varied group of researchers, filmmakers, engineers, designers, educators, and sexologists who are passionate about creating an honest, practical resource on women’s pleasure.

Users can now explore newly uncovered insights breaking down the specific ways different women and their partners increase and enhance pleasure—like edging, hinting, and layering.

Full access to the site requires a one-time payment of £25, a model they describe as akin to buying a book: once purchased you’re free to revisit as often as you like. The added bonus, however, is that this fee also grants access to content and resources that will be added in future.

All in all, it’s probably the best-value money you’ll ever spend. It’s not often you find yourself thoroughly impressed with a first-generation product—teething problems are part and parcel of tech offerings after all—but after spending a considerable amount of time exploring it, both myself and my husband were left stumped for things to criticize. So how does that actually work?

Demystifying sexual pleasure

For each topic and technique, you have a variety of videos (over 50 are currently available). Short introductory ones show a variety of real women (these are crucially not trained actors, yet they are confident, vibrant, eloquent, and passionate) sharing candid insights on what gives them pleasure.

Separate videos then show explicit (literally hands-on) demonstrations of how those techniques work in practice for them. Everything about the treatment, tone, and look of those videos is extremely tasteful and slick. Personally, at no point did I feel even the slightest bit uncomfortable watching them.

You then have the opportunity to try out the specific techniques through unique touchable video simulations. They work on your tablet, mobile touchscreen, or laptop/desktop. These basically depict an “interactive vagina” which you can manipulate at will—receiving encouraging audio feedback from the same mentor who explained and demonstrated the technique in the previous videos—until you manage to bring it to the point of orgasm. The gamification of the experience is not something you’d necessarily expect to work, yet it does.

Groundbreaking research

For those who want to dig deeper on why these techniques feel good, there’s also a lot of science to get stuck in, with statistics showing the prevalence of each variation and infographics clarifying exactly how they work. OMGYes conducted extensive research with over 2,000 women aged from 18 to 95.

“The details of women’s sexual pleasure have hidden in the shadows for far too long, and the taboo hasn’t helped anyone,” says Daniller. “The topic has been so taboo that even scientists hadn’t studied the specific, various ways of touching that feel good for different women. People are ready for an honest, clear-headed look at the nuances that can make all the difference in pleasure.”

The research took place over a period of two and a half years in two phases. First, OMGYes staff conducted over 1,000 in-depth video chat qualitative interviews with women giving insights into their “sexual journey” and how they discovered what works best for them, and what they wished all partners knew about women’s pleasure.

For the second phase, they partnered with two researchers from Indiana University’s School of Public Health, Debby Herbenick and Brian Dodge, to conduct the 2015 OMGYES Study of Women’s Sexual Pleasure with 1,055 women, ages 18 to 95. This study, they claim, is the first-ever, large-scale, nationally representative study on the specifics of women’s pleasure.

According to Daniller, however, there’s still quite a lot left to explore: “Due to the incredible response, we have already begun the next series of studies exploring the specific ways pleasure changes over a lifetime. Much of the revenue raised will fund future research aimed at de-stigmatizing and demystifying more and more facets of sexual pleasure.”
