As a camgirl, I’m always prepared for changes to our industry—be it the latest tech, updates to the sites I work on, privacy violations, or day-to-day fluctuations with clients.

In my line of work, no two days are ever the same: we never know when we’ll get a kooky, kinky request or spend hours in a private show building a new relationship.

However, COVID-19 has affected the industry in unprecedented ways, leaving many people struggling and others finding their fortune thanks to a boom in new clients. 

A nod to my privilege as an online sex worker

Before I start, I feel it is important to address that as an online sex worker, I feel significantly more privileged than sex workers coming from a background in full-service sex work or any work that involves physical contact.

These industries are now closed in many countries around the world, leaving full-service or in-person sex workers without alternative employment in a particularly vulnerable position.

Many clubs are not offering pay during this time and most sex workers are not eligible for unemployment benefits, which puts them in potential danger.

Those who work in full-service/contact sex work face having to continue working at increased risk with less choice in clients.

As someone who only does online sex work, which comes with its own dangers, I am privileged that I can continue to work and support my family throughout this time, without facing repercussions from the law or my health. 

The last couple of months bring a big increase in new webcam models and clients

The biggest change I’ve noticed in the industry is greater numbers of both new webcam models joining sites along with clients looking to combat self-isolation boredom with a little online fun.

As I mentioned above, with many sex work industries closing their doors during the pandemic, it has left few options for those needing to keep earning during this time. This has led to a significant rise in new webcam models. 

For some models, people being stuck at home with little to do has boosted their income significantly. However, others have noticed that increased competition has made them driven their prices down in order to keep their clients and earn enough money. 

Popular webcam site, Chaturbate [NSFW], stated it had noticed a 75% increase in new sign-ups to the site. However, this was far higher than the rate at which new clients were joining, meaning there are more webcam models were competing for fewer clients. 

There are also concerns that new people signing up to webcam sites might not be aware of some of the risks of online sex work, including doxxing, stalking, cyber-security concerns, and scams.

With so many people joining each day, fraudsters and people trying to take advantage of webcam models may find thousands of new faces to choose from, all of whom may be uninitiated with the darker side of the industry. 

Companies increase their payouts, but is it enough?

One of the biggest changes affecting the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic is in how webcam models are paid. 

Several companies, including Pornhub and Stripchat have changed their payment structures to allow their workers to get up to 100% of their earnings. This means webcam models can avoid or limit the cuts made from earnings that go to the companies.

These changes have been met with some enthusiasm—those who are already earning a lot as webcam models will see the greatest increase—but it has also provided an even greater incentive for people looking for alternative employment to consider camming as an option.

Ultimately, this has left camgirls like me, without followers in the hundreds of thousands, without a clear increase in earnings during this time but noticeably more competition.  

How you can support sex workers during this time

There are plenty steps that can be taken to support sex workers during this period.

One way to support sex workers is to pay for pornography. I know there are so many free sites and seemingly unlimited clips to choose from, but why not opt for knowing where your porn comes from? 

Check out your favorite stars and find if they have clip sites or look for an interesting indie company to support, this way you know the money is going to the right people. 

Another option is to continue to support online sex worker, like camgirls, and be generous with tips, if you can! This support should extend to anyone starting up in this industry or veterans who have been in this game since the late 90s, everyone could do with a little more cash in their pockets! 

You can also choose to donate to charities that are putting together emergency funds for sex workers. SWOP, SWARM, and local, sex-worker run local charities could benefit greatly from donations now to help provide money for sex workers in need. 

Lastly, it is important to point out that the situation many of us are in has been made significantly worse by the introduction of harmful legislation, such as FOSTA/SESTA.

This legislation made it harder to work in an online environment and shut down many of the sites we used to advertise. Therefore, please consider fighting against policies and legislation around the world that make sex work more dangerous. 

COVID-19 has dramatically changed the industry

Overall, COVID-19 has completely altered the webcamming landscape, bringing more attention to my industry, for better and for worse.

With greater competition for clients, I have noticed that my overall earnings are a bit lower, which is something my friends and colleagues in the industry have echoed.

I appreciate the support of companies that have made changes to their payment structures for taking steps to support the people who keep their websites going.

Regardless, it’s likely that the increase in pay-outs will not be enough for many people in this line of work to support their families, pay rent, and survive during this difficult time.

The latest example of the damage FOSTA/SESTA has done to sex workers. 

In November 2019, PayPal decided to stop all payments from Pornhub [NSFW] to its 100,000 performers.

This meant that many people were faced with delays in receiving their earnings and had to choose an alternative payment method in order to receive money earned in October. 

FOSTA/SESTA makes getting paid online more complicated

This ban on sex work payments is the latest in a stream of sex worker exclusions made by payment services following FOSTA-SESTA — Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act— passing with bipartisan support in April 2018 and being signed into law by President Trump.

The implementation of FOSTA-SESTA has meant that websites are held accountable for all sexual content uploaded or shared on their sites. This includes websites that promote sex worker safety by sharing information about dangerous clients. It has also led to sites such as Backpage shutting down and crackdowns on adult content on sites like Tumblr.

Facebook and Instagram have also been subject to tighter restrictions on content posted and recent updates to their Community Standards have seen a push against sexual content under the guide of reducing “sexual solicitation.”

PornHub updates performers

In a statement made on the company’s blog, PornHub said: 

We are all devastated by PayPal’s decision to stop payouts to over a hundred thousand performers who rely on them for their livelihoods…We sincerely apologize if this causes any delays and we will have staff working around the clock to make sure all payouts are processed as fast as possible on the new payment methods.

Although PayPal has cut ties with Pornhub [NSFW], there are still other available payment methods for Pornhub performers to get paid for their work: Paxum, Check, Cryptocurrency (Verge) as well as direct deposit. 

This is not the first time that PayPal has demonstrated its disregard for sex workers

Since the implementation of FOSTA/SESTA, PayPal has been applying its “acceptable use policy,” known for its lack of transparency and inconsistent enforcement regarding sex workers who use PayPal to receive payment for their services. 

The policy has been criticized for also targeting sex educators, sexual health advocates, and sex toy developers as well as other people selling sexual services such as escorting, camming or pornographic material. 

Furthermore, PayPal shows no signs of a U-turn, telling Vice:

Following a review, we have discovered that Pornhub has made certain business payments through PayPal without seeking our permission. We have taken action to stop these transactions from occurring.

Therefore, it looks like Pornhub and PayPal have truly parted ways for good, a move that should have been predictable for those following the impact of FOSTA-SESTA.

Other payment apps

As well as PayPal’s stance on sex work, many other payment systems have made getting paid for sex work even more difficult. 

Nearly all Payment Processors discriminate against sex work including, Square, Stripe, Braintree, Google Wallet SquareCash, Snapcash, Venmo Circle, GreenDot, and Amazon services. 

This leaves few alternatives for those looking for online payment systems and often means that the ones available are able to charge higher processing fees. 

Sex workers say it’s too little too late

Despite Pornhub [NSFW] blaming PayPal for the disruption to payments, sex workers are angry that it has taken until now for Pornhub to adequately address the discrimination sex workers face when trying to get paid for their labor. 

As argued by sex worker and activist YEVGENIYA on Twitter:

Pornhub/Mindgeek is a multi-billion dollar corp that funnels lots of money into international politics to ensure their own survival, yet they can’t put a little pressure on a company like PayPal or speak out against FOSTA/SESTA for the sake of the people who make them money?

Furthermore, YEVGENIYA argues that PornHub and parent company MindGeek have had the resources and finances at their fingertips to start their own payment system in order to avoid complications such as with PayPal.

Pornhub’s lack of response to tackle the known discrimination against sex workers until it was too late has allowed their performers to suffer late fees and disruption to their payment when this could have easily been avoided.

PayPal’s hostility towards sex workers makes cryptocurrencies all the more appealing

Issues with PayPal and other payment services are more reasons that getting paid in cryptocurrency can be seen as a better alternative.

Crypto payments hide the source of the payment so sex workers do not need to worry about their legal name being connected to their work, even years later.

It is also a popular choice on webcam sites and many camgirls like myself are paid in Bitcoin so that we can feel more in control over our finances and to maximize our anonymity in our line of work.

It can be time-consuming to wait for the money to come through but if you are able to manage the delay, it is worth it if you are concerned about your privacy.

Navigating the risks of live-streaming adult content.

As a camgirl, I’m constantly facing dangers online.

From hackers, doxxing, and online scams, people working in the webcam industry are under threat from opportunistic criminals and dangerous clients.

That makes us prime targets for stalking, harassment, and blackmail. I’ve gone to a lot of effort to maintain my privacy, which is my top priority. I and am always on the lookout for the best ways to stay safe online.

This goes beyond scrubbing and then deleting all social media (although that’s a good start), and involves more complex technology that can make all the difference.

In this article, I will illustrate some of the ways I’ve found for keeping safe as an online sex worker and the dangers of new technology.

Never risk sharing personal info

First of all, all real-life personal details should be off-limits. This includes your real name, birthday, information about your family, as well as your location.

I like to keep it really vague and only say which country I am from, when asked (although sometimes I just make this up too!) Other things to keep an eye out for are objects in the background of your videos. Make sure the camera doesn’t show outside your window, photographs or even parcels that have your details on them as this can be used to discover your address, putting your physical safety at risk.

Some VPNs will track some information and sell it on to companies and lots of free VPNs are also infected with malware that puts your privacy at risk. Therefore, it’s worth checking out the small print and making sure you are helping and not hindering your online safety.

Using a VPN can be a great way to conceal personal information but in it’s worth researching the best one for your safety.

CAPTCHAs

Another tip I have found helpful for working on sites that allow you to use bots is using Captcha, which stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart.”

Or more simply, a way of finding out if a user is human or not.

These tests may be a bit annoying for us humans when asked to click on the lorry or traffic lights for different sites but for camming, they can greatly impact our safety online.

For webcam sites, CAPTCHAs allow broadcasters to block other robots that post spam or those potentially recording streams by asking them to solve a mathematical equation or answer questions about an image.

Models can select specific users they want to allow to bypass Captchas and moderators are usually exempt. This bot can help avoid the posting of dangerous links in the chat or other phishing attempts so it’s definitely worth adding it to your stream for some extra protection.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is…

Finally, the last safeguard for camgirls is our own common sense. One of my first streams as a camgirl I had a client come into my room who asked me to “pm” (private message) them.

As a newbie with limited experience, I was happy to oblige all clients however on initiating conversation, the client offered to “help me out”. They then flooded my room with bots so that it looked like I had hundreds more people in my room.

I was starting to get very worried, especially when they asked me to pay them for the extra viewers they had just provided me. Newbie or not, I could tell that this was a scam.

I quickly blocked the user but every so often I still get someone coming into my room trying to sell me fake views again and again. It’s just the case of blocking before they can cause more trouble.

Being a camgirl means you need to be on guard for potential dangers wherever they present themselves and if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Overall, as a camgirl, I have to be on top of all possible safety concerns. I need to stay hyperaware of new technological developments that could both help keep me safe as well as put me in danger.

Online sex workers benefit most of all from talking to each other and sharing our experiences so it is worth keeping an eye out for new developments and sharing them to raise awareness.

Being a camgirl, I have tried a variety of different sex toys and vibrators and amassed quite the collection, thanks to generous tips from my clients. I’m always on the lookout for exciting new sex technology.

Couples’ time!

Using the device for couple play is Tiani 3’s most exciting feature.

The Tiani 3 is made with body-safe silicone and feels very soft. I particularly enjoy its flexibility, which allows it to fit well inside me and it isn’t hard to insert. I found that I didn’t need extra lubricant, which is usually a necessary element when playing with toys.
