Scientists shared research on this new contraceptive at the ACS spring meeting.

Until recent years, the breakthroughs within the male contraception sector were few and far between. For instance, many are unaware of the fact that a male birth control pill is in active development. 

This new form of male contraception was covered at the American Chemical Society (ACS) spring 2022 meeting. The hybrid event took place at the end of March and may have changed the contraceptive conversation as we know it.

The male contraception conundrum

There have been several attempts to develop these pills in the past, to no avail. A male contraceptive pill has been in development for over 60 years, with endocrinologist Gregory Pincus making the first attempt in 1957.

In the 1970s, the National Institutes of Health attempted to develop an injectable male birth control option. Although the research and trials showed that testosterone could be an effective male birth control method, the adverse side effects brought development to a screeching halt. Another method that is in development is the testicle bath. 

Either way, the release date of these products remains a mystery.

A promising non-hormonal pill is in development

The March meeting of the ACS showed that there had been a progression in the field, as well as an intent to move forward. 

This hybrid meeting included over 12,000 presentations from a wide array of scientists on various topics—including male contraception.

On this issue, scientists assert that they have a non-hormonal male contraceptive that prevents pregnancy in mice, without any obvious side effects. This is highly encouraging, given that side effects have been one of the main issues preventing previous male birth control pill attempts from progressing. 

In particular, a compound called YCT529 was discovered, which “inhibited RAR-α almost 500 times more potently than it did RAR-β and -γ.” When given to mice for four weeks orally, YCT529 reduced the sperm count by 99% without any observable side effects.

Moreover, once the mice stopped taking the medication, the mice were able to father pups within 4-6 weeks. 

Human clinical trials set to start this year

Now that they have completed the preliminary research, human clinical trials are set to begin during the third or fourth quarter of 2022. 

However, just because they had success with rodents doesn’t mean it will translate to the human population. Since it can be challenging to know how these compounds will work in humans, they are also looking into other compound options. To do so, researchers are “both modifying the existing compound and testing new structural scaffolds,” according to a press release by the ACS. 

The lack of funding could become a significant roadblock. There are presently no pharmaceutical companies interested in funding male birth control pills. Rather, organizations such as Male Contraceptive Initiative, its Executive Director Heather Vahdat, other non-profits, and the federal government are providing funding to continue with research and development. 

Nevertheless, valiant efforts are being made to bring male birth control to fruition soon.

Hook-up culture, a byproduct of social media, makes it difficult to establish genuine connections.

Although dating apps and social media allow us to connect with people around the globe, they have also left a trail of negative effects. For instance, social media has emerged as one of the top tools used to promote and facilitate hook-up culture.

As a sapiosexual, I have noticed that social media and dating apps have made it challenging to establish genuine connections with people offline. I believe that people are more concerned with what’s trending and how many “likes” they are getting online, than they are with creating authentic relationships.

Hook-up culture may work for some, but for sapiosexuals, who need genuine mental and emotional connections in order to feel attraction, it makes dating almost impossible.

Social media and hook-up culture

The filtered, limitless nature of social media has changed how many of us view relationships. According to Social Media Today, “‘Hanging out’ is the new norm, because people are presented with an endless supply of new options at the touch of their fingertips.” 

Social media seems to be contributing to a culture that places a low value on long-term commitment. Rather than form meaningful connections, many people would rather live in the moment and explore their almost endless array of hook-up options. 

Attention spans are shorter

Social media is also arguably shortening our attention spans. Those who are young and developing are especially prone to this issue. 

For instance, “sidebarring” is a new dating trend among Millennials. This increasingly common behavior involves moving someone to the so-called side, to focus your attention instead on someone or something else. It can occur in person or virtually and typically involves the use of technology.

“Sidebarring” seems to be a side effect of smartphones and social media. People are so distracted by what’s going on on their phones, tablets, and computers, that they ignore what’s going on in their everyday lives. 

Desire for instant gratification

Social media has also contributed to our collective desire for instant gratification. Rather than needing to go out into the world and forge genuine, sustainable connections, we can find everything with the click of a button. And this, unfortunately, applies to our relationships as well. 

The use of social media and other technology includes ads, alerts, and other tactics that are designed to attract our attention and distract us from reality. Instant feedback from our technology contributes to an overall culture that values instant gratification over lasting meaning. 

Unfortunately, this affects the way we connect with each other. These days, some people are more likely to turn to social media for validation and to find their next relationship, rather than trying to repair or sustain an existing one.

Sapiosexuals are negatively impacted by hook-up culture

I have identified as a sapiosexual since before I heard of the term. For as long as I can remember, I have always preferred to deal with those I felt I had a mental connection with.

While I fully respect everyone’s right to live as they see fit, I can’t help but observe the fact that I frequently encounter people who seem intent on keeping all of their relationships on the surface. 

Since hook-up culture became more acceptable, people can write off random encounters as just part of “getting to know” someone. Unfortunately, this line of thinking doesn’t work for someone like me. I end up terminating a lot of potential situationships before they even begin, because I get turned off when someone is too sexual too soon. 

The bottom line

In the end, although it can get (sexually) frustrating, I am fine with things being the way they are. Social media also allows me to lurk and find out if someone is even worth my time before getting invested. As a sapiosexual, I would much rather be alone than spend five minutes talking to someone who will never value me or my brilliant mind. 

Nevertheless, much like flip phones and dial-up internet, the future does not seem to favor those of us who prefer to make our sexual connections the old-fashioned way.

The uses of ‘polyamory,’ ‘BDSM,’ and ‘nonbinary’ in print are all climbing upwards.

Just a few decades ago, public writing on topics like BDSM, polyamory, and non-binary themes would have been enough to cause widespread panic among conservatives and concerned parents alike.

Nevertheless, in recent years, these words and phrases are being researched at steeply growing rates. This seems to be more than mere happenstance. Rather, it may be a sign that society is becoming increasingly more sex-positive.

According to Google Ngram Viewer, a search engine that is used to chart word frequencies and trending topics that are published in print, there has been a considerable increase in the use of the words and phrases “polyamory,” “BDSM,” and “nonbinary” over the last decade.

A sign of the times

It’s no secret that Western society’s ideas about sex and sexuality are drastically shifting.

Rather than championing remaining celibate until marriages and staying in a monogamous, committed relationship until death, many people have started to veer away from this ideal for various reasons.

For instance, with the marriage rate hovering over 50% for many decades, many people have started questioning the so-called ‘sanctity’ of marriage. 

This is especially the case for Millennials.

Studies have shown that this demographic, in particular, has a healthy fear of marriage. This is primarily due to the fact that millennials are plagued with financial woes, and many fear the potential financial ruin associated with divorce. 

Polyamory, BDSM, and nonbinary, Oh my

This brings us back to the aforementioned trending topics. Groups, such as millennials, have dissenting opinions about marriage when compared to previous generations. Therefore, it makes sense that words and phrases such as these would be trending. 

Given the views that many are taking on marriage, polyamory has become an attractive option for those who want relationships but are no longer sold on the necessity of monogamy.

Likewise, by placing less of an emphasis on marriage, Western society has become more sexually liberated overall. This led to the mainstream acceptance of movies such as 50 Shades of Grey, which helped make the once taboo world of BDSM mainstream. 

Lastly, removing the pressure of getting married and having the perfect family enabled more people to be free of societal pressures and live in their truths. So, while being nonbinary was once a relatively unknown concept, the complexity of gender identity is gaining greater attention every year.

The bottom line

New attitudes towards marriage and relationships have created a new, much more sex-positive America. Although the nation is not yet sexually liberated, the fact that these phrases have essentially been trending for a decade is a sign that we’re headed in that direction.
