I never knew Steve was so ‘substantial.’ But then again, how could I have when all our flirting had been circling-the-airport banter and sideways glances through the half-decade we had known one another. That is if I could rise from my swishy stupor sitting across from him, my eyes and libido locked on my phone’s face.

I was being treated to Steve’s memory movie from his POV (which I assumed would be the case when viewing anything from anybody’s Dump) looking down at his naked body, then up to the door where he was (or ‘had been’) watching and waiting for a woman named Janine to enter his bedroom. That all this had occurred ten years ago, that I hadn’t ever met Janine, (or the fact that Steve’s bedroom décor had not changed in a decade) nor would I recognize her when she came through that door—and she’d be as naked as Steve, he assured me—that Steve’s tummy was indeed bigger now and that I had actually accessed this sexual snippet from out of his head, stored as it now was in The Dump’s cloud storage didn’t forgive the fact that I was basically playing voyeur and might just, in a few seconds, get so overwrought I might just squiggle myself off the front of my chair.

Scientific breakthrough of the century be damned; this was hot!

I have a friend, Anita, who has suffered from degenerative peripheral vision loss over the past two years. Anita uses a cane and ‘tracks’ any space she’s in by moving her head with painful slowness from left to right. I thought of that moment then as the heat between my legs increased and I peeked further into Steve’s past dalliance. 

That Steve and his three buds had found a way to tap into memories, then download them for view, was an unprecedented strike, to be sure. But as he had reminded me again and again, electronic impulses, no matter their source or content, could, theoretically, always be digitized and, if digitized, downloaded. And although Steve’s bros might very well inherit the Earth, by tapping into our lusts first and foremost with their Earth-shattering invention, they were sure to score funding for The Dump all that much faster.

Adult content and technology; the best of bedfellows.

I lifted my eyes finally from my phone’s face just about when Steve’s bedroom door opened and a stunning (and very nude) Janine walked into the room. I wasn’t above wanting to stare long and hard at her metered approach or Steve and their long-ago lovemaking, but I thought it better to disengage (difficult as that was). It was one thing to be allowed access to my buddy’s mind spank-bank storage, but I felt it might be an intrusion on the privacy of someone who had no idea I was peeking in on her pink parts, even though Janine was long gone from Steve’s acquaintance.

And not to be even more distracted as I was already with all that was flying into my brain (don’t ever let it be said that I can’t multitask) I instantly thought of that speech Spencer Tracy gives in Inherit the Wind, playing lawyer Henry Drummond. “Madam, you may vote, but at a price,” he begins about what we get and gain with progress. “You lose the right to retreat behind the powder puff or your petticoat. Mr., you may conquer the air, but the birds will lose their wonder and the clouds will smell of gasoline.”

Could I smell that gasoline now? Or more precisely…lube? 

“We definitely got to get you hooked up; the look on your face is priceless…and so hot,” Steve said.

I hadn’t even thought what it would be like downloading the good, the bad, and the fugly of my sexual encounters. But if Steve wanted my particular dump to continue his work to watch my sexual play from years ago (or watch me watch it?), who was I to deny him? 

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander when the goose is digital. 

Then again…

“You know, I think I’d rather the real thing, at least for right now,” I said, pushing my iPhone across my dining room table in front of me. 

Standing I turned to my buddy who, catching the gist of what I was onto, pushed his glasses up his long nose, a move I knew him to execute whenever he was suddenly surprised, and sat back even harder into his chair.

I dropped to my knees.

Staving off the smell of gasoline (lube), at least for now, I knew Anita would be proud.

But connecting with a partner via the net, while something many have been doing for quite a while and surely a way of playing that opens all kinds of interesting sexual positive possibilities, also throws the lid of Pandora’s Box wide open.

As Adrian Gonzalez, Editorial Director of ToyChats, reminds us, “I hate to admit it, but sex toy apps aren’t immune to data breaches.”

How we got here

By the end of the new century’s first decade, sextoy manufacturers had begun equipping their products with a range of new, interactive technologies, including Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.

Additionally, rather than storing personal data, Ohdoki now utilizes a unique, end-to-end encryption system to ensure that user data and personal communications remain fully protected.

Wilhelmse further summed up their dedication to consumer security, stating:

A strong database with a strong defending system is required for us to keep our app safe, I’m not an I.T. professor so it’s hard for me to explain this, however, what I know the fact is that the personal information was sold by someone in 99% of total cases, not hacked. This means that if we don’t sell this information, the chance of hacking is super low. And we never do something illegal.

Together we stand

In the current climate of what NexGenus calls “frictionless shopping,” a consumer state providing a “seamless customer journey where every touchpoint, from product discovery to checkout, is intuitive and efficient,” it’s becoming clear that most people aren’t fond of waiting for anything—let alone when purchasing smart sextoys. 

Leading, with the proliferation of rapid online checkouts, to suppliers needing to have their products ready to ship at a moment’s notice, but hopefully not sacrificing customer security in the process.

Although some companies are taking steps to keep their transactions and sales private, Adrian Gonzalez also reminds us that it’s just as imperative for buyers to remain acutely aware of their security risks and not let their desires get in the way of their common sense. 

Take control

Has this manufacturer suffered security breaches, and, if so, how quickly and effectively were they addressed fixing these problems. These days, you don’t have to dig too deep for reviews…especially negative ones.

Another crucial security measure is to be aware of how a company acquires and uses customer information.

Exploring the fusion of online and in-person networking

In response to the COVID pandemic, which practically shut down in-person gatherings overnight, members of the BDSM community have begun using innovative new ways to connect with one another. 

Be it via online searches, listening to podcasts, delving into various assortment of subreddits, or good, old-fashioned networking; they’ve discovered new—often high-tech, sometimes low-tech–methods to find friends, support, partners, or playmates.

She added how good old-fashioned email works as well, “Having a go-to email list is also necessary, and I feel like a lot of people start to think they’re outdated, but I still find them useful. I also still use printed posters and flyers because some people still find my events that way as well.”

Although it’s obvious blogs, press releases, and online posts remain effective at getting the word out, producers like Megan A also need to know that where and when a show takes place will always play a vital role in how to promote their events successfully.

Take Sin City, for example, a town replete with adult entertainment venues, many of which operate seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.

“For Las Vegas, and the museum even more specifically, the larger the lead time one leaves to advertise an event or show could signal the death knell of attendance,” Dr. Victoria Hartmann, director of Las Vegas’s Erotic Heritage Museum, told me. 

“People come to Las Vegas for a few days, pick what they might go to see when they are here; there’s a lot of options in this town. We’ve learned unless it is a residency show like our ‘Puppetry Of The Penis’, inundating a potential customer with news of an event weeks before doesn’t bring us a big audience. In fact, the opposite is true.”

In short, the best press coverage in the world, in print, online, or featured on a local news broadcast, won’t have much of an impact if not timed correctly, especially in bustling entertainment hubs like Vegas.

Still room for print?

Designer/Producer James Dury, head of PictureRama Publishing, has been putting out the UK-based Fetish Map for a decade. 

In this day and age of apps and online searches, his map stands out, as much for featuring kinky retail establishments, service providers, upcoming events in and around the London area, as well as it’s an actual, printed-on-paper map.

Dury explained to me, “During lockdown, we conducted a survey amongst our readers and subscribers. ‘What is your fetish? We want to know all about it. We got a good response ranging from one-liners right up to full-length essays, going into great detail about what our readers are interested in and how they play that out. This allowed us to go in search of businesses/events/teachers/providers that/who cover all those requirements.”

As Dury’s Fetish Map shows, there remain plenty of ways, from online to good old-fashioned paper maps or in-person networking, for kinksters to find what and who they’re looking for.

Nothing’s gonna stop us now—

Portuguese writer José de Sousa Saramago imagined a terrifying pandemic in his novel Blindness. But not even a Nobel Prize recipient couldn’t have imagined what COVID would end up putting most of society through.

Another off-base speculation? Hardly, as in fact, these and other online-only social events were popular before the onset of the pandemic.

Leading to the bigger question: will in-person kink play remain popular, or will the scene be someday replaced by digital BDSM experiences?

Meeting in the middle

Just as one person cannot appropriate the images, recordings, or any other intellectual property from the creator of that property without their permission or payment–or both–equal questions arise over what AI can legally use, as well as  what payments and permissions might be needed.

Still, applying some caution with a hefty handful of  optimism, we should always hold for a more positive  future.

As AV Access writer Stephanie points out “The future of AI webcams looks bright, with advancements in technology and new applications emerging all the time.” 

The future we surely want—and need?

The faster we  come to realize the better mouse traps that come with any  new program, service, or technology, the more we need to  use laws–not forgetting a good dose of ethics–to ensure we, and our sexual pleasures, will move forward and not slide backward.

Without a doubt, not everything we throw at the proverbial wall of culture sticks, meaning in time we’ll be able to take to some aspects of AI and the customized erotica it may help us create as we have all the other technological advancements that have made adult entertainment get better and better..

So we may not  need to fear a Terminator future. As man always has, we will learn right along with AI, making mistakes as much as we do advancements, and eventually come to work with and not against each other.

Dressing for pleasure—while saving the planet

Since 2020, Copenhagen Fashion Week, Northern Europe’s largest haute couture celebration, has embraced sustainability by requiring its participants to use Earth-friendly materials in their designs. 

Other events have followed suit, such as New York’s Green Show, which is all about looking good while being environmentally aware. 

With all this in mind, it seems pretty evident that modern designers are becoming not only aware of up-and-coming fashion trends but also supporting the use of next-gen, recycled, and bio-based materials.  

But can this growing movement to create low-impact, recyclable clothing extend to, shall we say, specifically kinky garments?  

Or, to put it another way, will green soon become fetish wear’s new black?

Fetish fashion: what is it, and who wears it?

Financial Express defines fetish fashion and why it seems to be so ever-increasingly popular as: “Anything that adds a sense of sexuality, kinkiness, quirkiness, and representation of freedom can be classified as fetish fashion.”     

Fetish and fashion have been steamy bedfellows for quite some time. In fact, the argument could be made that it and modern designs have always been closely intertwined.

As Financial Express further explained, “After the Met Gala and the VMAs ceremony, it became more prominent. The comeback is proven by the appearance of Kim Kardashian, wrapped from head to toe in a black cotton Balenciaga “T-shirt.”

Alternatives on the horizon

The problem is fetish fashion tends to come with a less-than-earth-friendly price tag. For instance, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of kink-community’s most popular materials, is made from non-renewable fossil fuels.

As author and founding director of the Collective Fashion Justice non-profit  Emma Hakansson put it, “While it’s worth being aware that producing some synthetic materials actually has significantly smaller climate and other environmental impacts compared to materials like leather and wool, ‘less bad for the planet’ is not the same as ‘good for the planet.”

Fortunately, there might be some more environmentally sustainable choices on the way, including some postulated by Håkansson herself, who’s consulting on sustainable fashion legislation and working with fashion brands to transition from animal-derived materials towards greener choices.

Håkansson suggests cork, a naturally water-resistant material that, when mixed with cotton, can be dyed and embossed to closely resemble leather, could be a good replacement.

Another possibility is Mirum, which is made from—among other materials—rice hulls, coconut husks, charcoal clay, and plant-based oils and waxes, which can be easily recycled when no longer used.

Latex: best for what ails us?

Another fetish-wear staple is latex. But while it may look and sometimes feel like PVC, it’s not as environmentally harmful.

“Latex has often been related to fetishism, but I think designers are starting to realize (sp) that it’s a natural fabric,” French fashion designer Arthur Avellano told Dezeen, “which makes it very interesting in today’s discussions about ecology and ethical issues.”  

Dawn Mostow of Dawnamatrix Designs agrees, writing, “There are many reasons why latex is an eco-friendly product—at the same time being one of the more popular for fetish wear.”

She continues, saying, “First of all, it’s made from trees, but the trees don’t need to be cut down to cull the substance needed to make latex. Secondly, it is biodegradable. And lastly, latex takes time and skill to render, and that workmanship generally means that the work that goes into making latex garments cuts down on the aspect of rampant commercialism and mass production.”

So, it looks like one of the most popular fetish garment materials might already be an eco-friendly fetish fashion choice. 

Wild for us, smart for the planet

From Elvis Presley wiggling in his Nudie Suit or black leathers— not forgetting his legendary white jumpsuits—to Madonna’s pointy bras and Lady Gaga’s meat dress, the desire to show off has led to fantastic performances, ever more interesting art, and numerous iconic and very arousing fashion moments.

From Club B33, a public strip club inside VRChat, to other streaming adult clubs scattered across Twitter, Discord, and TikTok, there’s a growing number of ways to virtually dance the night away–or watch someone perform an alluring strip tease from the privacy and comfort of your own home.

Peeking at the future of live adult shows

Technology being what it is, we’ll likely see even more wildly creative ways to enjoy live and arousing events in the years ahead.

You might, for instance, join your fellow patrons in applauding a synthetic dancer’s performance, shower her with cryptocurrency while you’re halfway around the world, or partake in completely AI-created environments where anything and everything could happen.  

Fun for us, but tomorrow’s live adult shows could be fantastic for the performers as well, giving flesh and blood humans, artificial companions, or holograms endless possibilities for turning their audiences on.  

While a good argument could be made that we may return to what life was like before COVID when it comes to taking in–or putting on–a sexually exciting event, the show will always go on.
