Never forget that our memories, whether natural or artificial, hold us together

I never knew Steve was so ‘substantial.’ But then again, how could I have when all our flirting had been circling-the-airport banter and sideways glances through the half-decade we had known one another. Maybe now that he and his self-titled “Meeky-Geeky Quad” had finished the grand experiment, we’d get time to explore our attraction.

That is if I could rise from my swishy stupor sitting across from him, my eyes and libido locked on my phone’s face.

“Well?”

“You were a lot skinnier then, huh?” I asked, trying to diffuse the sexual tension as I watched the downloaded scene unfold.

I was being treated to Steve’s memory movie from his POV (which I assumed would be the case when viewing anything from anybody’s Dump) looking down at his naked body, then up to the door where he was (or ‘had been’) watching and waiting for a woman named Janine to enter his bedroom. That all this had occurred ten years ago, that I hadn’t ever met Janine, (or the fact that Steve’s bedroom décor had not changed in a decade) nor would I recognize her when she came through that door—and she’d be as naked as Steve, he assured me—that Steve’s tummy was indeed bigger now and that I had actually accessed this sexual snippet from out of his head, stored as it now was in The Dump’s cloud storage didn’t forgive the fact that I was basically playing voyeur and might just, in a few seconds, get so overwrought I might just squiggle myself off the front of my chair.

Scientific breakthrough of the century be damned; this was hot!

I have a friend, Anita, who has suffered from degenerative peripheral vision loss over the past two years. Anita uses a cane and ‘tracks’ any space she’s in by moving her head with painful slowness from left to right. It’s the only way she can digest surrounding details so as not to trip over something beyond her limited vision. On one recent particular August Saturday, the curly-haired redhead and I happened to get out and about and during our city romp we happened upon some chalk sidewalk art in a bohemian neighborhood on our way to our favorite Thai eatery. Later, while looking at a few of the pictures I took of that art while sitting at the restaurant Anita and I were pleasantly shocked, that from the snaps on my iPhone screen, she could see all that my picture captured, more of that street sketch than she would have ever seen unaided. It had been a poignant reminder of what our handheld world was allowing beyond human restrictions.

I thought of that moment then as the heat between my legs increased and I peeked further into Steve’s past dalliance.

That Steve and his three buds had found a way to tap into memories, then download them for view, was an unprecedented strike, to be sure. But as he had reminded me again and again, electronic impulses, no matter their source or content, could, theoretically, always be digitized and, if digitized, downloaded. And although Steve’s bros might very well inherit the Earth, by tapping into our lusts first and foremost with their Earth-shattering invention, they were sure to score funding for The Dump all that much faster.

Adult content and technology; the best of bedfellows.

I lifted my eyes finally from my phone’s face just about when Steve’s bedroom door opened and a stunning (and very nude) Janine walked into the room. I wasn’t above wanting to stare long and hard at her metered approach or Steve and their long-ago lovemaking, but I thought it better to disengage (difficult as that was). It was one thing to be allowed access to my buddy’s mind spank-bank storage, but I felt it might be an intrusion on the privacy of someone who had no idea I was peeking in on her pink parts, even though Janine was long gone from Steve’s acquaintance.

Steve had reminded me, very much like the extinction of the bald eagle or the encroachment of AI singularity, The Dump could only have been invented because humans had evolved to this point, a point we very much wanted to be. And not to be even more distracted as I was already with all that was flying into my brain (don’t ever let it be said that I can’t multitask) I instantly thought of that speech Spencer Tracy gives in Inherit the Wind, playing lawyer Henry Drummond. “Madam, you may vote, but at a price,” he begins about what we get and gain with progress. “You lose the right to retreat behind the powder puff or your petticoat. Mr., you may conquer the air, but the birds will lose their wonder and the clouds will smell of gasoline.”

Could I smell that gasoline now? Or more precisely…lube?

“We definitely got to get you hooked up; the look on your face is priceless…and so hot,” Steve said.

I hadn’t even thought what it would be like downloading the good, the bad, and the fugly of my sexual encounters. But if Steve wanted my particular dump to continue his work to watch my sexual play from years ago (or watch me watch it?), who was I to deny him?

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander when the goose is digital.

Then again…

“You know, I think I’d rather the real thing, at least for right now,” I said, pushing my iPhone across my dining room table in front of me.

Standing I turned to my buddy who, catching the gist of what I was onto, pushed his glasses up his long nose, a move I knew him to execute whenever he was suddenly surprised, and sat back even harder into his chair.

I dropped to my knees.

Staving off the smell of gasoline (lube), at least for now, I knew Anita would be proud.

Sextoy manufacturers and customers need to take customer data protection seriously

Whether wearing BlueTooth-enabled chastity devices to experience the power-exchange pleasures of sexual denial play or enjoying the mutually interactive possibilities of Internet-connected sextoys, the new world of smart sextech devices is well on its way to enhancing the sex lives of millions of people.

But what happens if a hacker infiltrates the app controlling your chastity device holding your genitalia for ransom—or threatens to expose your interactive self-pleasuring activities unless they receive a certain amount in Bitcoins?

In a study conducted by Dr. Mark Cote, Dr. William Seymour, Dr. Jennifer Pybus, and Dalia Mariasin for the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, these and other types of sex toy hacking involving cloud-based services were explored.

Add to that Apple allowing the first-ever adult content app to be downloaded on their iPhone platforms in the European Union and the ever-new round of remote sex toys being introduced seemingly every day, we can’t but wonder where we are, mid-way into this decade, in securing our ever-more technologically advanced sex toys and adult apps?

Buyer beware

As this year’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show) illustrated, a slew of new desktops and laptops featuring new chips running ever-advancing-AI software are well on their way, not to mention a slew of next-generation handhelds and a bevy of state-of-the-art BlueTooth-enabled sextoys

But connecting with a partner via the net, while something many have been doing for quite a while and surely a way of playing that opens all kinds of interesting sexual positive possibilities, also throws the lid of Pandora’s Box wide open.

As Adrian Gonzalez, Editorial Director of ToyChats, reminds us, “I hate to admit it, but sex toy apps aren’t immune to data breaches.”

Emphasizing the need for users to be more security conscious, Adrian added, “It goes without saying, but make sure you’re on a private network when you’re using a sex toy app. You’re putting yourself and any virtual partners at risk if you’re using somebody else’s WiFi or a public network.”

How we got here

By the end of the new century’s first decade, sextoy manufacturers had begun equipping their products with a range of new, interactive technologies, including Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.

However, while this period also saw a decrease and eventual near cessation of phthalate use in those same products—notably the result of Ulrich Krieg’s research—many of those same companies tended to fall behind in terms of securing their online-capable toys.

Companies start to step up

Fortunately, a growing number of sextech industry leaders are beginning to prioritize customer security more seriously.

“Safety and privacy are top priorities for us at Ohdoki, and we’ve built our devices with key safeguards to protect users from modern digital threats,” Ohdoki’s CEO, JP Wilhelmse, manufacturer of The Handy stroker and Oh! Vibrator told us.

For instance, Wilhelmse’s company has implemented new methods to help ensure user security and anonymity, starting by giving new customers the option to set up a personal account or not.

Additionally, rather than storing personal data, Ohdoki now utilizes a unique, end-to-end encryption system to ensure that user data and personal communications remain fully protected.

Wilhelmse further summed up their dedication to consumer security, stating:

A strong database with a strong defending system is required for us to keep our app safe, I’m not an I.T. professor so it’s hard for me to explain this, however, what I know the fact is that the personal information was sold by someone in 99% of total cases, not hacked. This means that if we don’t sell this information, the chance of hacking is super low. And we never do something illegal.

Together we stand

In the current climate of what NexGenus calls “frictionless shopping,” a consumer state providing a “seamless customer journey where every touchpoint, from product discovery to checkout, is intuitive and efficient,” it’s becoming clear that most people aren’t fond of waiting for anything—let alone when purchasing smart sextoys.

Leading, with the proliferation of rapid online checkouts, to suppliers needing to have their products ready to ship at a moment’s notice, but hopefully not sacrificing customer security in the process.

Although some companies are taking steps to keep their transactions and sales private, Adrian Gonzalez also reminds us that it’s just as imperative for buyers to remain acutely aware of their security risks and not let their desires get in the way of their common sense.

Take control

Adding to this Caveat Emptor approach, this ExpressVPN article provides even more salient (some might even say obvious) points, such as customers needing to adequately research not just what they are buying but who they are buying it from:

Has this manufacturer suffered security breaches, and, if so, how quickly and effectively were they addressed fixing these problems. These days, you don’t have to dig too deep for reviews…especially negative ones.

Another crucial security measure is to be aware of how a company acquires and uses customer information.

As for how to prevent someone from accessing your smart playthings, ExpressVPN recommends services such as theirs, writing, “VPN will not remove the risk of a hacker infiltrating your sex app maker’s servers. But it will prevent snooping on where exactly it is you might be going when connected to a WiFi sex toy.”

Lastly, be cautious when electronically sharing your Internet-of-things devices, particularly with companies that have a less-than-stellar security rating.

Be smart, play safe

In the end, what we’ve always needed is well-reasoned, transparent communication between manufacturers and purchasers—no matter what the product is, where, why, and how it’s used—combined with customers also developing some much-needed shopping smarts.

Exploring the fusion of online and in-person networking

In response to the COVID pandemic, which practically shut down in-person gatherings overnight, members of the BDSM community have begun using innovative new ways to connect with one another.

Be it via online searches, listening to podcasts, delving into various assortment of subreddits, or good, old-fashioned networking; they’ve discovered new—often high-tech, sometimes low-tech–methods to find friends, support, partners, or playmates.

In a similar vein, fetish-themed adult entertainment venues are using a combination of tried-and-true as well as out-of-the-box techniques to appeal to kinksters worldwide.

Working together—kinksters seeking to find others like them and organizers trying to get the word out about their events—these and other innovative social and technological developments could be giving us a glimpse of BDSM’s future.

The world is a kinky oyster

While certain things have changed, like how local munches—a non-sexual gathering of community members wanting to socialize—feel like they’re increasingly hard to find, larger BDSM conventions can often still be found on kink-related online spaces and sites, like the kink-related social network, Fetlife, Discord, Reddit and even Eventbrite.

Other high-tech ways kinksters are linking up include specific kink and fetish dating sites, like ALT, Fetish.com, BDSM.com, or subreddits such as r/BDSMpersonals.

Suppose your idea of playing includes games as well as BDSM scenes. In that case, there’s a host of immersive titles to choose from, many of which have proven to be great places to connect with playmates in the real world as well, such as 3D SexVilla, IMVU, Yareel, and others we’ve previously previewed.

Though frequently not as popular as non-kinky dating apps, there’s a steadily rising number of Android and iOS ones specifically made for the BDSM community, including Kinkoo, Kink D, FET, Whiplr, and Feter.

Getting the word out

On the other side of the fence, as in venues and events trying to reach the kink community, I asked Megan A, Liquid Red Las Vegas’ fetish party producer, to share how she gets the word out for her almost monthly shows, “I post on my event websites liquidredlv.com and liquidreddetroit.com, as well as Facebook events, Fetlife events, all of my social media channels and groups that I am involved with.”

She added how good old-fashioned email works as well, “Having a go-to email list is also necessary, and I feel like a lot of people start to think they’re outdated, but I still find them useful. I also still use printed posters and flyers because some people still find my events that way as well.”

Although it’s obvious blogs, press releases, and online posts remain effective at getting the word out, producers like Megan A also need to know that where and when a show takes place will always play a vital role in how to promote their events successfully.

Take Sin City, for example, a town replete with adult entertainment venues, many of which operate seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.

“For Las Vegas, and the museum even more specifically, the larger the lead time one leaves to advertise an event or show could signal the death knell of attendance,” Dr. Victoria Hartmann, director of Las Vegas’s Erotic Heritage Museum, told me.

“People come to Las Vegas for a few days, pick what they might go to see when they are here; there’s a lot of options in this town. We’ve learned unless it is a residency show like our ‘Puppetry Of The Penis’, inundating a potential customer with news of an event weeks before doesn’t bring us a big audience. In fact, the opposite is true.”

In short, the best press coverage in the world, in print, online, or featured on a local news broadcast, won’t have much of an impact if not timed correctly, especially in bustling entertainment hubs like Vegas.

Still room for print?

Designer/Producer James Dury, head of PictureRama Publishing, has been putting out the UK-based Fetish Map for a decade.

In this day and age of apps and online searches, his map stands out, as much for featuring kinky retail establishments, service providers, upcoming events in and around the London area, as well as it’s an actual, printed-on-paper map.

Dury explained to me, “During lockdown, we conducted a survey amongst our readers and subscribers. ‘What is your fetish? We want to know all about it. We got a good response ranging from one-liners right up to full-length essays, going into great detail about what our readers are interested in and how they play that out. This allowed us to go in search of businesses/events/teachers/providers that/who cover all those requirements.”

As Dury’s Fetish Map shows, there remain plenty of ways, from online to good old-fashioned paper maps or in-person networking, for kinksters to find what and who they’re looking for.

Nothing’s gonna stop us now—

Portuguese writer José de Sousa Saramago imagined a terrifying pandemic in his novel Blindness. But not even a Nobel Prize recipient couldn’t have imagined what COVID would end up putting most of society through.

It’s also why professional as well as amateur futurists have often failed to predict what the world would be like when we could step out of our houses once again—or share a meal (or more) with a friend.

Not to be undone, what could tomorrow’s BDSM networking, dating, or attending in-person events look like?

Megan A. postulated, “I think people are mainly back to wanting to get out and see other people. At this point, very few people have hang-ups about events. Only a few older people I know still worry about crowds.”

So it’s pretty safe to say we’ll likely see a preponderance of online-only performances, meet-and-greets, and virtual play parties, many perhaps aided by virtual reality, augmented reality, or artificial intelligence technologies.

Another off-base speculation? Hardly, as in fact, these and other online-only social events were popular before the onset of the pandemic.

Leading to the bigger question: will in-person kink play remain popular, or will the scene be someday replaced by digital BDSM experiences?

Meeting in the middle

It’ll likely be a little from column A and a little from column B: a combination of the real and the unreal that’ll make finding a kinky partner, or two or three or more as easy as snapping your flesh-and-blood or virtual fingers or—as we’re talking BDSM after all—cracking a whip.

How machine learning systems might shape the future of adult entertainment

By now we’re all familiar with how rapidly AI systems like ChaGPT are progressing.

What you may not know is there are already developers using these new technological tools to create places, people and things to need their own or their customer’s unique sexual desires.

Whether it’s gaming, communicating, downloading music; for all intents and purposes we’re not able to make what we want, when we want it, and how we want it.

These are just some of the nearly-limitless possibilities artificial intelligence may offer us, from personalized virtual/augmented reality erotic experiences to sexually provocative chatbots–not forgetting revolutionary advances in sexbot technologies–the best, we hope, is yet to come. Will it be only about ai?

On the Fagen Wasanni Technologies site Donovan Johnson discusses AI’s “minimal content restrictions,”and how its users might enjoy and “explore a wide range of subjects without limitations.”

In a world without these limitations though, the question becomes, will we want our AI generated performers, sex partners and digitally rendered social spaces to replace and not enhance their real-life counterparts?

In some instances, they already have.

What already exists

Virtual clubs and party spaces already exist, digital spaces where people can meet, greet, and interact with people who share their similar, sexual interests.

To ensure nothing and no one gets out of hand, these non-physical,disease-free environments are often self policed very, much like how players might keep a watchful eye on each other to ensure a safe gaming environment.

So anyone can visit an online dungeon or virtual kink club, meeting friends and playmates, and maybe having a specific sexual desire fulfilled, all while enjoying the safety and relative anonymity of cyberspace–all without having to call an Uber or pay that ubiquitous two-drink minimum. How can AI make things better?

Before we get too far down the rabbit hole of the ways machine learning systems might be applied to erotic imagery, engaging in salacious chatting, and the creation of sensual environments, let’s first unpack the benefits customers, providers, performers, are already experiencing.

For instance, AI currently provides blisteringly fast language translation for people who want to meet online but but don’t speak the language.

Then there’s how today’s AI systems are able to manage the thousands of comments that routinely sail into and out chat rooms: a real boon for real time, adult performers.

Compliments of facial recognition technology, we have much more secure and assured online age verification systems–like ones described by BCAMS Magazine. not to mention how age verification can be of utmost importance for people working in the adult entertainment industry–online or not.

Then there’s how AI’s improved video quality has upgraded everyone’s adult entertainment viewing experiences, providing us with an unprecedented level of erotic immersiveness.

Copyrights, privacy—oh my!

Unfortunately, many developer’s still train their machine learning systems using data non-consensually scraped from the net.Likewise, material used to train AI image generation software also is frequently, and illegally, pulled from a multitude of different sources–copywritten or not.

As U.S. Copyright Law says, it only protects “the fruits of intellectual labor” whether it’s created or modified solely by the human mind.

This clearly puts AI-generated content into murky legal waters, especially regarding what rights these programs might be traipsing across–and, from there–what limitations we need to consider when using them.

Just as one person cannot appropriate the images, recordings, or any other intellectual property from the creator of that property without their permission or payment–or both–equal questions arise over what AI can legally use, as well as what payments and permissions might be needed.

Still, applying some caution with a hefty handful of optimism, we should always hold for a more positive future.

As AV Access writer Stephanie points out “The future of AI webcams looks bright, with advancements in technology and new applications emerging all the time.”

The future we surely want—and need?

The faster we come to realize the better mouse traps that come with any new program, service, or technology, the more we need to use laws–not forgetting a good dose of ethics–to ensure we, and our sexual pleasures, will move forward and not slide backward.

Without a doubt, not everything we throw at the proverbial wall of culture sticks, meaning in time we’ll be able to take to some aspects of AI and the customized erotica it may help us create as we have all the other technological advancements that have made adult entertainment get better and better..

So we may not need to fear a Terminator future. As man always has, we will learn right along with AI, making mistakes as much as we do advancements, and eventually come to work with and not against each other.

As with other erotic technologies like virtual and augmented reality to name just two, it’s clear, sooner or later, we’ll find our way.

Dressing for pleasure—while saving the planet

Since 2020, Copenhagen Fashion Week, Northern Europe’s largest haute couture celebration, has embraced sustainability by requiring its participants to use Earth-friendly materials in their designs.

Other events have followed suit, such as New York’s Green Show, which is all about looking good while being environmentally aware.

With all this in mind, it seems pretty evident that modern designers are becoming not only aware of up-and-coming fashion trends but also supporting the use of next-gen, recycled, and bio-based materials.

But can this growing movement to create low-impact, recyclable clothing extend to, shall we say, specifically kinky garments?

Or, to put it another way, will green soon become fetish wear’s new black?

Fetish fashion: what is it, and who wears it?

Financial Express defines fetish fashion and why it seems to be so ever-increasingly popular as: “Anything that adds a sense of sexuality, kinkiness, quirkiness, and representation of freedom can be classified as fetish fashion.”

Fetish and fashion have been steamy bedfellows for quite some time. In fact, the argument could be made that it and modern designs have always been closely intertwined.

As Financial Express further explained, “After the Met Gala and the VMAs ceremony, it became more prominent. The comeback is proven by the appearance of Kim Kardashian, wrapped from head to toe in a black cotton Balenciaga “T-shirt.”

Alternatives on the horizon

The problem is fetish fashion tends to come with a less-than-earth-friendly price tag. For instance, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of kink-community’s most popular materials, is made from non-renewable fossil fuels.

As author and founding director of the Collective Fashion Justice non-profit Emma Hakansson put it, “While it’s worth being aware that producing some synthetic materials actually has significantly smaller climate and other environmental impacts compared to materials like leather and wool, ‘less bad for the planet’ is not the same as ‘good for the planet.”

Fortunately, there might be some more environmentally sustainable choices on the way, including some postulated by Håkansson herself, who’s consulting on sustainable fashion legislation and working with fashion brands to transition from animal-derived materials towards greener choices.

Håkansson suggests cork, a naturally water-resistant material that, when mixed with cotton, can be dyed and embossed to closely resemble leather, could be a good replacement.

Another possibility is Mirum, which is made from—among other materials—rice hulls, coconut husks, charcoal clay, and plant-based oils and waxes, which can be easily recycled when no longer used.

Latex: best for what ails us?

Another fetish-wear staple is latex. But while it may look and sometimes feel like PVC, it’s not as environmentally harmful.

“Latex has often been related to fetishism, but I think designers are starting to realize (sp) that it’s a natural fabric,” French fashion designer Arthur Avellano told Dezeen, “which makes it very interesting in today’s discussions about ecology and ethical issues.”

Dawn Mostow of Dawnamatrix Designs agrees, writing, “There are many reasons why latex is an eco-friendly product—at the same time being one of the more popular for fetish wear.”

She continues, saying, “First of all, it’s made from trees, but the trees don’t need to be cut down to cull the substance needed to make latex. Secondly, it is biodegradable. And lastly, latex takes time and skill to render, and that workmanship generally means that the work that goes into making latex garments cuts down on the aspect of rampant commercialism and mass production.”

So, it looks like one of the most popular fetish garment materials might already be an eco-friendly fetish fashion choice.

Wild for us, smart for the planet

From Elvis Presley wiggling in his Nudie Suit or black leathers— not forgetting his legendary white jumpsuits—to Madonna’s pointy bras and Lady Gaga’s meat dress, the desire to show off has led to fantastic performances, ever more interesting art, and numerous iconic and very arousing fashion moments.

But the best could be yet to come, thanks to how the fetish fashion industry is learning how to make us look fabulous while saving the planet at the same time.

We might soon see new, fantastically brilliant dyes derived from fruits and plants, ever-more eco-friendly, supple, and strong materials, and even paraben, vegan, and bleach-free detergents to clean our ultra-arousing new garments with.

Best of all, we could live in a world where looking sexy will go hand in hand with ensuring the world we’re living in will be green and beautiful for a very long time.

VR, AR, sexbots, and more–oh my!

Despite the Covid pandemic striking the live erotic entertainment industry particularly hard, compliments of everything from pole-dancing androids to combining stage shows with virtual, augmented, and mixed reality systems, we might see them bouncing back bigger, better, and sexier than ever before.

Put your hands together for–

Back in 2018, mechanical strippers sporting cameras in lieu of heads wowed the crowd at that year’s CES convention.

Now, five years later, sexdoll manufacturer, Cloud Climax, says it’s about to release Ms. EX, an ultra-realistic pole-dancing robot.

Like their other realistic dolls, Ms. Ex’s state-of-the-art multi-joint dynamics give it a remarkable level of natural fluidity–making it just the thing to liven up tomorrow’s high-tech sex shows.

And should things get out of hand, we could also see the addition of artificially enhanced security personnel.

For example, during this year’s CES, Sapphire Las Vegas Gentleman’s Club, one of the largest in the world, invited engineer and inventor Jonathan Tippett to bring his nearly four-and-a-half ton, thirteen-foot-tall exoskeleton power suit to guard the front door.

Playing Mech “The Bot” Johnson, Tippett told Forbes, “It’s the bouncer, so it has to do its job, basically just by looking menacing,”

Live on stage–

Beyond robot pole dancers and mechanized security guards, there’s the idea of merging virtual, augmented, or mixed-reality systems with adult clubs: the idea is that by fitting the venue up a network of series of stereoscopic cameras, anyone can enjoy a live performance no matter where in the world they happen to live.

A futuristic fantasy? Not so, as some clubs have already begun offering live streaming feeds of their stages and even, with the permission of their performers, what’s going on backstage.

It’s a safe bet to assume this sort of immersive technology will continue to improve, especially with high-end companies like Apple getting into VR.

But what about shows that are only virtual? As the YouTuber Twortles explained, it’s already a popular reality, “The metaverse already has secret clubs and dancers, and you’re already late to the show.”

From Club B33, a public strip club inside VRChat, to other streaming adult clubs scattered across Twitter, Discord, and TikTok, there’s a growing number of ways to virtually dance the night away–or watch someone perform an alluring strip tease from the privacy and comfort of your own home.

Peeking at the future of live adult shows

Technology being what it is, we’ll likely see even more wildly creative ways to enjoy live and arousing events in the years ahead.

You might, for instance, join your fellow patrons in applauding a synthetic dancer’s performance, shower her with cryptocurrency while you’re halfway around the world, or partake in completely AI-created environments where anything and everything could happen.

Fun for us, but tomorrow’s live adult shows could be fantastic for the performers as well, giving flesh and blood humans, artificial companions, or holograms endless possibilities for turning their audiences on.

While a good argument could be made that we may return to what life was like before COVID when it comes to taking in–or putting on–a sexually exciting event, the show will always go on.
