The sextech industry can’t wait to explore the technology’s erotic potential

The next, upgraded iteration of Apple’s mixed reality headset may arrive early next year or as late as the next year, but that hasn’t stopped explicit content creators from preparing for its arrival and the delights in store for their VR customer base.

Details are scant, though sites like 9to5 seem fairly certain the new Apple Vision Pro 2 will include the faster, more efficient M4 or M5 chip; an improved neck and head stress-reducing head strap; and, according to this Bloomberg article, a method to “increase the number of cores inside of the neural engine—a component for processing artificial intelligence tasks.”  

The article further explains, “The neural engine in the current Vision Pro includes 16 cores, a measure of processing power. These capabilities are critical for a device that relies on AI for the live processing of imagery and applications in complex virtual environments.”

Lighter, more powerful, more comfortable—and cheaper?

Often heralded as a significant step towards realizing the immersive potential of augmented and mixed reality, the initial Apple Vision Pro nevertheless received mixed reviews, mostly due to its prohibitively steep price point.  

However, starting at $3,499, excluding the cost of special prescription lenses, and nearly $3,899 for the one-terabyte model, wasn’t the only thing holding it back.  

As another Bloomberg piece noted its awkward heaviness, few supported apps, display glare, and while in-store demonstrations generated interest, they ended up promising, “Consumers on an experience that doesn’t quite exist yet.”

My own brief time spent with the headset backs this up, as I felt an odd combination of excitement at what it might offer in the future and frustration that I couldn’t take one home.

Unfortunately, while very little is known about what the Apple Vision Pro 2 might be like, there’s little—or more accurately, less than nothing—reported regarding whether it’ll ever be anything but an overpriced novelty.

Looking beyond the arousing horizon

Meager details aside, what the Apple Vision Pro 2 could be has at least one popular virtual reality adult platform all-a-twitter.  

SexLikeReal, which hosts thirteen thousand different titles from nearly two hundred different studios, doesn’t shy away from fresh-out-of-the-box sex tech innovations. The website was quick to support interactive devices, such as those made by Kiiroo and Lovense.

This commitment to innovation helps explain why, in a company blog post, SexLikeReal predicts the Apple Vision Pro 2’s greater comfort and particularly its higher resolution displays will boost customer passthrough, claiming “scenes will feel even closer to performers being in your space. Switch between full VR and passthrough in seconds, without breaking immersion.”

Just like being there—but not yet?

Immersion, after all, is what augmented reality is all about: while VR drops the viewer into a completely digital space, AR — and its close cousin, Mixed Reality — projects a person, place, or thing over the wearer’s existing environment.

Or, to put it another way, by donning something like the current or upcoming Apple Vision Pro 2, you could see and eventually even interact via Bluetooth-enabled smart devices with the adult entertainer sitting on the edge of your bed.

However, the Apple Vision Pro showed that, although the sextech and adult entertainment industries may be eager for the technology, we may have several years before AR’s immersive power is fully realized.

Beginning with what Bloomberg and others anticipate: reduced weight and greater user comfort, a larger selection of apps and further support for existing sites and programs, and—more than anything—lowering hardware costs.

A challenging proposition, to be sure. Notably, regarding price, boosting next-gen AR gear isn’t the same as doing so with VR, where the latter requires maxed-out processing power to not only power and head-track a pair of high-definition displays but also seamlessly match content with whatever the wearer is already looking at.

But as with tech advances from artificial intelligence tech to 3D printing, easy, affordable, fully immersive, and completely interactive AR systems are inevitable—and however long they take to arrive, you know the adult entertainment industry will be ready, willing, and absolutely able to take full advantage of AR’s erotically-awesome possibilities.

Intriguing mix of futuristic neo-noir, top-tier graphics—and a bevy of adult celebrity performers

Taking a unique—and frankly refreshing—approach to erotic video games, the recently released Cyber Sexuals places you in the kick-ass shoes of Axel King, a down-on-his-luck street hustler trying to navigate the dark, neon-lit streets of the appropriately named Cyber City.

Lying somewhere between a significantly less-than-AAA title and explicit content from a better-than-average, interactive virtual reality adult site, Cyber Sexuals is an entertaining experience. 

Especially since—with a bit more polish—it could be a sign of things to come: a whole new genre might finally manage to merge the best of non-erotic VR gaming with first-rate explicit content.

Under dead television colored skies

Sold as a series of self-contained, $29.99 episodes, the first, “The Heist,” has Axel hijacking a CyCorp truck in order to score enough credits to spend quality time with Val, an exotic dancer played by real-life adult actress Katee V.

If this were any other adult game, virtual reality or otherwise, you’d naturally expect everything to not pass go, not collect twenty dollars, and jump straight to the explicit action.  

But—surprise—most of the episode is instead playing Axel as he blasts a bevy of CyCorp goons in the process of scoring his much-needed loot. Only after he escapes in a fairly well done CGI cutscene does he get to pay to see, and more, with Val.

A Slamhound’s after you

Three other episodes, currently four in total, continue Axel’s cyberdelic adventures: duking it out in a suitably neon-shaded ring (“The Brawl”) for the attention of adult star Little Dragon as Aeon; risking life most of his limbs rescuing and Nadia (Indica Marie in “The Underground”); then partnering with the elite hacker and love interest, Astra—played by Rei Sky—to expose an illegal synthetic human operation (“All In With Astra”).

Featuring different gameplay mechanics, and an assortment of diverse sexual encounters, each episode also builds on the previous, giving Cyber Sexuals a pleasant cohesion like the chapters in a book or a series with an overarching storyline.

Speaking to XBIZ, Cyber J described his game, saying, “What makes this more than just another interactive adult game is the seamless fusion of cinema-quality production, cutting-edge gameplay, and real-world eroticism.”

Adding, his goal was to make it a much more engaging and therefore immersive experience for the player: “This is not a passive experience; it’s a game that demands your attention, your choices, and your desires. Part action film, part sensual odyssey, Cyber Sexuals is a fully fleshed-out narrative that places you at the center of danger, desire, and deception.”

Nothing at all like Tokyo

Cyber Sexuals may have its metaphorical head in cyberpunk’s static-grey skies, but right now there are improvements to make before the game can be everything it could or maybe should be.

Hardware is first, as it requires a pretty hefty PC, like an Intel Core i5 4590 with 16GB of RAM. On the VR side, unless you have either an HTC Vive or an Oculus Rift CV1, you’re out of luck.

Software is the second if it’s to achieve a look as slick and polished as Cyberpunk 2077 is now.  The comparison feels like there’s way too much time, effort, energy, and money miles between them.  

For instance, the first episode has Axel picking up a pistol, ammo, grenades, healing items, and such, only for him to use them in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it action sequence.

Then there’s the writing and acting, like the developer’s odd choice to narrate Axel’s thoughts and actions with speech soundling like something between an AI-generated voice and a distractingly uninterested voice actor, instead of having him speak in first person.

Feeling it in my ghost

Even with these rough edges, Cyber Sexuals is worth checking out.  More so if you’re as jacked into cyberpunk’s chrome-and-neon cyberspace as I am.  

Besides, the only way Cyber J’s going to be able to polish and perfect his game, or give us a totally new one that’ll truly live up to its potential, is if we support Cyber Sexuals now— which, bugs aside, is still gleamingly impressive.

The future of adult entertainment might be more psychological, less technological

From precisely directed streams of high-pressure air, hydrogel gloves lined with electrotactile pads, and what’s basically a full body version to directly stimulating our hands all the way to our brains, the researchers—not to mention the sextech industry—have been pursuing the holy grail of haptic virtual reality for decades.

But what if our minds are actually responsible for our experiences of lifelike touch?? Far-fetched, to be sure, but perhaps this undoubtedly enthralling concept might someday become a key part of haptic systems—and make our dreams of fully interactive, totally immersive adult VR movies and games a reality.

Touch me, touch me

Philosopher Laura Marks’ Touch: Sensuous Theory and Multisensory Media explores the concept of “haptic visuality,” suggesting that visual art, and possibly even the written word, can evoke tactile sensations in the viewer—or reader.

In an Instagram post, Miraal Habib, a “bio-mimicker” visual artist, pondered in an Instagram post, “What if we could simulate the feeling of touch without actually touching anything?” Habib was inspired by Marks’ theory during her own Master’s thesis work.

Habib’s project utilizes natural patterns and imagery as a more effective means of communicating important scientific information, because “Human beings have become attuned to understanding nature since the beginning of time.”

Feeling feelings I never felt 

How does virtual reality, especially the explicit adult variety, fit into all of this? The answer could lie in producing content that, before the action begins, first firmly grounds the viewer in reality. 

By this, I mean that most VR videos lean towards creating a fantasy, almost surreal experience; one where everything is polished, perfect, and the farthest thing from real life. Clothes mysteriously vanish, sexual activities pop in and out of existence, and linear time is nowhere to be seen—or experienced.

Then there’s the hardware, which, ironically, becomes heavier and increasingly cumbersome the higher the resolution, thus making them less immersive. Add VR motion sickness to this, and it’s understandable why it takes so long—if it happens at all—to get a feeling of actually being in a virtual environment.

It also explains why a large percentage of today’s sextech haptic accessories have a massively high hill to climb, the foothills of which are the less-than-arousing sensation of having one’s genitals inserted into a loudly whirling, clearly mechanical device.

I let my sensory nerve open

As mentioned, Marks’ concept of specifically crafting art capable of eliciting a touch-like experience might not solve all of VR’s haptic issues, but it might be a great place to start.

For instance, VR adult content could put as much work into crafting familiar environments as they currently do to create unreal ones, such as setting the stage by having the viewer enter via a door with squeaky hinges and stepping into a familiar-seeming room rather than an immersion-breaking set.

Next, how about adding a plethora of other grounding details, such as having a nice, plump, juicy apple offered up, then lusciously bitten into by our more fleshly, less plastic performer. Obviously we can’t taste it—at least not until haptic tech finally gets us there—but if Marks is right, it might help boost our sensual verisimilitude.

Likewise, everything should unfold in real time, with additional cues such as groaning bedsprings and floorboards, a squeaking floor, or a whooshing ceiling fan.

Companies must also make VR headsets lighter and more immersive until they’re as comfortable as regular eyeglasses.

Your heart is beatin’ next to mine

Again, all this won’t replace haptic tech’s fully immersive Holy Grail. However, these more realistic approaches to producing adult VR content may mean the winning hardware won’t have to work as hard as it otherwise would.

Think of it like that imposing hill I mentioned: we could either work harder and harder to make the lifeless feel lifelike, or take what might prove to be an exponentially more immersive shortcut by focusing on making what already looks realistic into where everything—and everyone—feels excitedly lifelike.

Welcome one and all to “Barnum Jr.’s Magnificent and Fabulous City”

Would you believe that in 1966, three years prior to the prototype virtual reality system and fourteen years before the earliest commercially available headsets, a group of avant-garde architects envisioned what could best be described as a multi-sensory, fully haptic potentially arousing VR experience?

Superstudio merged biting social commentary, wildly out-of-the-box thinking, outright satire, and speculative technologies. Its founders, Cristiano Toraldo di Francia and Adolfo Natalini—with Gian Piero Frassinelli, Alessandro, Roberto Magris, and Alessandro Poli subsequently joining the collective—produced some of the most original architectural proposals the world has ever seen.

Step right up, step right up!

One of which was their 1971 Twelve Cautionary Tales for Christmas project, which Frassinelli described as intending to “Evoke twelve visions of ideal cities. The supreme achievement of twenty thousand years of civilization, blood, sweat, and tears; the final haven of Man in possession of Truth, free from contradiction, equivocation, and indecision; totally and forever replete with his OWN PERFECTION.”

A series of mockingly utopian, really dystopian metropolises ranging from a “New York Of Brains,” a cube comprising hundreds of thousands of networked, disembodied human minds, to the “City Of The Book,” where the weighty tomes dictate its citizens’ lives, they must wear around their necks.

Then there’s “Barnum Jr.’s Magnificent and Fabulous City” an eerily prescient—as well, if you look at the right way, a surprisingly-optimistic and sexually liberating take on what would eventually become virtual reality.

You won’t believe your eyes!

“Barnum Jr.’s Magnificent and Fabulous City” was intended to be a mobile, temporary structure: a vast, two-mile-wide quasi-circus tent, half of which contained a one-fourth-scale model city featuring, among other attractions, various replicated international landmarks.

Unlike wholly electronic, virtual reality systems—which, until the development of 1968’s The Sword of Damocles, were purely hypothetical—guests to Superstudio’s miniature, immersive amusement park began by donning a sort of sensory feedback bodysuit linked to an appropriately scaled, fully interactive miniature version of themselves.

Readers might recognize this as a type of telepresence; the feeling of being somewhere or someone else, particularly when virtually linked to a different body type or a gendered robot body.  

The spectacular, the unbelievable

While never intended to be actually realized, “Barnum Jr.’s Magnificent and Fabulous City” remains an exciting concept published long before VR arcade machines became available in the early 90s.

Interestingly, its use of telepresence-operated miniatures may not be as outdated as you may think.  Contemporary virtual reality systems certainly have their advantages, notably that it isn’t necessary to construct a slew of hyper-realistically detailed small-scale environments as you can just program whatever you want to experience.

But if there’s a universal desire that every human shares, it’s for novelty. Although VR might be easier and cheaper than recreating an over-fifty-year-old, less-than-serious immersive experience, an analog version still might draw in a surprising number of people looking for something completely new, and, most importantly, sexually new.

Prepare to be amazed, astonished, and astounded

As we reported last year, it could eventually be possible to combine eroticised, reduced scale dolls with intricately engineered robotics, a set of equally miniaturized stereoscopic cameras, and a generous amount of probably AI-assisted programming and—lo and behold—we’d have something quite close to a modern day version of “Barnum Jr.’s Magnificent and Fabulous City.”

Differing from the original, our new, state-of-the-art installation could be where visitors can change as little or as much about themselves as they’d like, trying on various body types, different gender expressions, or unique, imaginatively sexualized forms.  

We could even see elaborately constructed, quasi-clockwork, steampunk-inspired avatars, with synthetic manufacturers offering all the pleasures of their full-size products—only at a vastly reduced scale.

Superstudio’s “Barnum Jr.’s Magnificent and Fabulous City” may be a warning from the past, but looking back, there’s no reason why we can’t be just as inspired to create something fun and sexy, and where past, present, or future dreams can come true.

Goodbye, clumsy, expensive stereoscopic cameras—hello, low-cost, higher-resolution experiences

A revolutionary way to create unprecedentedly immersive, sexually explicit virtual reality videos could be right around the corner, compliments of putting an imaginatively new spin on what now may appear to be a pretty standard technology.

Before getting to why this is so fascinating, let’s set the stage by quickly going over why it is currently so difficult, and not exactly cost-effective, to create virtual reality media.  The thing about VR is that in order to make everything look as if the viewer is in the middle of the action, it takes not one but two, slightly offset perspectives—often done with a separate camera or a special lens arrangement.  

Compared to usual, non-steroscopic productions, VR can be more trouble than it’s financially worth—even if VR adult content continues increasingly popular, with the industry expected to soon reach nearly 70 billion dollars according to this Demandsage estimate.

But what if there was a way to do everything that present virtual reality content creators can do. But at a fraction of the cost?  Or also take any 2D video or a set of static images and transform them almost magically into a 3D, virtual experience?

Prest-O Change-O

The up and coming technology behind all this is already familiar to most of us.  After all, it’s the same one that gives people a way to create an image or an entire movie with just a carefully worded prompt.  Or, in the wrong hands, has led to an explosion of emotionally devastating, non-consensually produced deepfakes.

Okay, enough dancing around the digital bush. It looks like we’ll soon be able to use AI image generation software to do what pricey VR filming hardware did, but far easier and cheaper.

NVIDIA Instant NeRFs already allows developers to create “a set of static 2D images into an immersive 3D scene in minutes.”  

In case you’re curious, NeFR stands for “Neural Radiance Fields,” the process that enables Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to realize multi-dimensional subjects from a series of two-dimensional samples.

Abracabra

While the adult entertainment industry hasn’t caught on to this technology’s erotic potential, more than likely, some as yet unnamed industry genius will have a lightbulb-over-their-head moment. When they do, everything could change like nothing before or since.

Let’s be honest, just as AI image-generating software can be used for positive or less-than-positive purposes, so too could NeFRs.  Rather than dismissing the potential harm, I hope that by the time the adult entertainment industry recognizes its potential, we will also have a social and legal framework in place to prevent its abuse. In this context, NeFRs could be precisely what explicit VR content needs the most.

Lower costs, for example, might mean virtual reality may finally be able to meet its growing demand, with producers taking non-VR content and upgrading it to fully rendered, totally impressive experiences.

Alakazam

Why stop at making the old new again?  We all know that AI can produce sometimes disturbingly realistic, but completely illusory, images and videos, so why shouldn’t it do the same with a couple of extra immersive dimensions?

But there’s still more fun on the horizon.  Presently, there’s a respectable slew of adult videos embedded with sextech-connected codes so users can watch and feel at the same time.  

Putting in those digital triggers is time and money-consuming, but the good news is that the same sort of work could be done by specialty-trained AIs—able to do what human developers can’t, to the tune of squeezing in a huge eye-popping range of new, sexually immersive possibilities.

AI image generation software may feel like we’ve done nothing but crack open Pandora’s box.  Though unlike the myth, what comes out is ours alone to decide, so let’s not slam the lid shut out of fear but open it with our eyes wide open to how to use it creatively—and most of all responsibly.

Some hits, some misses, and who knows what’s yet to come?

Science fiction has never really strived to be prophetic. Mostly the genre has used speculation to draw attention to social issues of the day; a funhouse mirror held up to mankind.

And when it has tried to gaze into a crystal ball, sci-fi’s track record is more than a bit lacking—to be polite.

Especially in regards to the future of sexuality.

But it’s fun to look at some notable books and films that tried to envision what sex would be like in the future. In other words, right this very minute.

A lot of things turned out to be flat out wrong. But what’s even more intriguing—and even more than a bit chilling—is what they actually may have gotten right.

If not this year but very, very soon.

Stand on Zanzibar by John Brunner

John Brunner’s (1934–1995) novel Stand on Zanzibar (1968) is—at the risk of hyperbole—a phenomenal work: literary, complex, insightful, playful, and, despite having been written almost 50 years ago, this Hugo-winning novel reads as it if could very well have been written today.

Media oversaturation, runaway genetic screening, and monolithic corporations replacing government, the book depicts the world of 2010 as one that is both an exaggeration of the 60s and 70s, as well as alarmingly similar to what we’re experiencing now.

One thing that Brunner speculates on is the normalization of polyamory: consensual sexual relationships involving more than two people—to put it in overly simplistic terms.

While the 2010 of Stand On Zanzibar sees polyamory (as well as casual sex, homosexuality, and bisexuality, and more!) as such a common element of human society that it’s all but invisible, but in our current year it is only exercised by a small minority.

But that is changing—and very fast.

Not only are many scientists noticing a growing acceptance of polyamory, but they are suggesting that polyamory may be a remarkably healthy sexual option for many.

Studies have even shown that polyamorous groupings even tend to restrict the spread of sexually transmitted conditions (STCs), as opposed to people who cheat while in a monogamous relationship.

So while Stand On Zanzibar was not quite a perfect vision of the near future, Brunner may not have been that far off. Just give us a few more years.

Soylent Green directed by Richard Fleischer

While the New York of Richard Fleischer’s 1973 film Soylent Green it takes place in 2022 we might call this vision of a nightmarishly overpopulated world a complete miss.

Following Detective Frank Thorn (Charlton Heston) as he investigates the assassination of a high-ranking employee of the Soylent corporation, the audience is shown a world where human life has all but zero value.

In fact, and this should not come as a surprise to anyone, really, it is eventually revealed that the popular titular food alternative is … let’s let the famous line speak for itself: “Soylent Green is made out of people!”

While we are, thankfully, a little ways from cannibalism, another unique feature of this near future is how women are turned into “furniture:” literally property that comes with renting a high-end apartment.

Tragically, Soylent Green may not actually deserve a prophetic miss on this one. It is a global shame that even now there are an estimated 21 to 29 million human beings being held in slavery—and that 22% of them are victims of sex trafficking.

The 6th Day directed by Roger Spottiswoode

This sneer-and-kill Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle from 2000 is, firstly, set in 2015, and mostly, a play to many people’s ethical concerns about cloning.

Cloning is actually more common that you might think. In fact, we’ve managed to do it to quite a few animals—just not ourselves.

But while The 6th Day didn’t get human cloning right, there are plenty of incredible biological innovations that are right around the corner.

One of the soon-to-be everyday biological innovations is the idea of organic 3D printing coupled with a touch of genetic engineering. What this means to the future of sex is pretty mind blowing: for the first time organs, of any kind, will be able to be grown from a material that likely won’t be rejected because they’ll be made from the receiver’s own tissue.

Genitals may soon be a matter of choice and not genetics, as well as opening the door to altering them completely for any number of reasons: increased nerve endings, taste buds everywhere, and muscular control.The sky—and the erotic imagination—will be the limit.

I Will Fear No Evil by Robert Heinlein

Though many see this novel by the science-fiction grand master as one of his less-grand works, I Will Fear No Evil (1970) is still a fascinating read—especially as it delves into gender, sexuality, and the possibility of transferring one mind into another.

Taking place in 2015, elderly Billionaire Johann Sebastian Bach Smith, to preserve his life, has his brain placed in another person’s body. Two unexpected things happen: one, his mind ends up intermingling with that of the donor, and two, the body belonged to his female secretary.

This sets the stage of a very Heinleinian, though always entertaining, exploration of societal roles, biology, eroticism, and the differences —and similarities—between the sexes.

True, we can’t just plop one brain into another person’s body. But we are making some serious headway in making a direct link from one mind to another.

Just last year Spanish scientists managed to send the thoughts “hola” and “ciao” from the mind of a volunteer in India to three others in France—via email, no less.

Even though the result is pretty simple, the implications are staggering. The better we will get at understanding the brain—and the mind—the sooner we will be able to not just transmit thoughts, but maybe even move human consciousness from one person to another.

And what does this have to do with sex? Pretty much everything, actually: as eroticism is a mind thing, despite what our bodies try to tell us, this means that we might be able to timeshare vacations in the body of our dreams—especially our sexual ones.

Who knows? Maybe we’ll also be able to not just exchange but merge ourselves with someone else: sex taken to the ultimate level.

Strange Days By Kathryn Bigelow

For our last failed speculation, we take a similar neuroelectrical trip to just more than a decade ago. Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow’s science-fiction film Strange Days—though shot in 1995—visits the feverish chaos of Los Angeles at the turn of the 21st century.

Our burnt-out anti-hero, Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes), scrounges a living selling SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) technology. Want to experience what it’s like to make love as a woman, jump off a roof, fall in love … you name it? Just use one of these illegal headsets and there you go.

While the plot is driven by a pair of ridiculously psychotic cops, the star of the film is the tech itself.

Sadly, 2000 came and went with no SQUID in sight. But, if you read just a few paragraphs back, there’s a very good reason to think that we may be doing pretty much everything the SQUID could, and did, do in Strange Days. And very soon.

After all, once you get information digitally out of a human being’s mind, there’s no reason why you couldn’t record it. We are already doing something like that with mice and rats. Humans, more than likely, won’t be far behind.

Sex, again, is where it’s going to be at. In a mirror to Strange Days, it’s not hard to imagine sexual experiences being sold to anyone who wants them. It could also leave behind so many sexual hangups that still plague humanity. It’s pretty hard to be prejudiced when you literally can see the world through someone else’s eyes—or mind.

Science fiction—books and movies—didn’t really get their future, our present, very right.

But for every miss, every embarrassing omission, there are more than a few that actually did manage to stare into their future … or one that just hasn’t happened to arrive just yet.
