From cybernetic accessories to cutting-edge materials, we’ll look as hot as we feel

When not protecting the wearer against the weather—or in some cases other humans—clothing has always been about sex.

While materials came and went, the basic idea of fashion has stuck around. From power ties to high heels, corsets to tuxedos, jockeys to hot pants, we’ve forever been trying to accentuate, or downplay, certain parts of our anatomy.

But now it looks like things will really be changing. Frequently using what is called intelligent clothing or e-textiles, a few innovative designers are exploring wild new territories—and perhaps giving us a glimpse of the erotic fashions for the next century.

Anouk Wipprecht

To put it overly simple, technology plus fashion, plus sensuality, equals Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht.

One of her designs called the ParticleDress, embraces the open-source movement: where all kinds of technologies are being made available for anyone to tweak or play with.

Basically, she created a 3D printed framework/garment that supports a standardized hexagonal ‘module’—then she reached out to creative people all over the world, inviting them to design their very own modules to be attached to the dress. The final selection of these submissions then made it into the final design, unveiled at the San Francisco Maker Faire in May of this year.

This idea has all kinds of sexy possibilities. Want to make the dress react to body temperature—thus indicating arousal? Want it to show where you want to be touched? Want to show your sexual preference? Want to be connected to your Bluetooth enabled sex toy—and really push your button?

All you need to do is design your own module and attach it to something like Wipprecht’s dress.

Playful, daring, and even interactive, one of Wipprecht’s other designs, called The Spider Dress, reacts to the wearer’s unconscious biosignals (like rate of breathing) using sophisticated sensors. In response, it triggers a microcontroller-operated defensive posture. In other words, it senses if the wearer is threatened or anxious and raises its plastic arms in warning.

Assembled using one of the brightest new manufacturing methods, 3D printing, The Spider Dress is a perfect melding of fashion, cutting-edge engineering, and social interactivity.

Daan Roosegaarde

The Intimacy 2.0 dress, created by another Dutch designer, Daan Roosegaarde, is much more directly erotic. In fact, this is a garment that will not just indicate that the wearer is turned on but will literally show it.

Fabricated again using state-of-the-art printing tech, the dress has sensors that detect body heat, and, when it reaches a certain special level, e-foil panels turn transparent.

If you’re feeling the touch of sexism in these designs, rest assured that Roosegaarde is currently working on garments designed for more than just the female form—though what part of the wearer’s garment will turn transparent hasn’t been shown yet.

Behnaz Farahi

Another take on the idea of a garment that reveals arousal comes from Los Angeles-based Behnaz Farahi. While Roosegaarde’s Intimacy 2.0 used electro-transparency, Farahi takes an equally elegant, though more physical approach.

Another difference between these two is that Farahi’s Caress of the Gaze dress uses eye-tracking technology to measure the interest, not of the wearer, but those looking at the garment or the person donning it.

Once the dress measures the viewer’s desire, a mesh of trigger muscle wires (Nitinol) then move 3D-printed feathers—revealing with their motion the (ahem) appreciation of anyone looking.

Do It Yourself

Going back to Wipprecht’s open-source project, one of the most intriguing aspects of this movement of combining tech, style, and sex is that there are a wide array of simple tools available—and many more on the way—allowing anyone to homebrew their own erotically stylish smart outfits.

The LilyPad from Arduino, for instance, is a range of miniature, attachable devices that can be joined to each other and to a garment using conductive thread.

Temperature, light, movement, proximity… you name it, you can buy a device that will react to it and then generate sound, light, text messages, or anything else you want to transmit. Turned on? Let your homemade smart suit do the talking and flash a signal to your object of affection.

And there are plenty others. Fabrickit and Flora, and its even-smaller kin, Gemma, offer all kinds of possibilities.

And, to get your signal out there, there are many manufacturers of electroluminescent panels and wires that will brightly glow at the touch of a switch or action of a sensor. There are even companies creating flexible LCD displays, which means with a little work anyone could create an erotic display to wear to a wild occasion—or make an event of their own.

Perfectly summing up both her Intimacy 2.0 design, and this movement of combining technology, fashion, and eroticism, Farahi says: “Technology will enhance our bodily function and give us a power that our body doesn’t have.”

And, as always with us human beings, we know that power will become a beautifully sexual one.

Sexually intriguing sci-fi from when “cyber” was cool

Though popular and widely respected, particularly among fans who appreciate their frequently disturbing erotic imagery, directors like David and Brandon Cronenberg aren’t the only filmmakers who’ve dared point their cinematic imaginations towards an exciting view of what life—and sex—might be like in the years ahead.

Since many of the following movies were released nearly twenty years ago, their future is closer to today than tomorrow.  Even so they’re entertaining and even offer up a bevy of quite frequently fascinating, sexually speculative ideas. 

XChange (2000)

Its budget may have been small, but when it comes to fast-forwarding the imagination, few films can match XChange. For starters, it revolves around an up-and-coming technology that enables person A to switch minds, even over long distances, with person B.  

Think telepresence, but instead of inhabiting a robot, you’d instead take someone else’s body for a spin.  The plot twists when Toffler (played by Kim Coates) swaps with Kyle MacLachlan’s criminally nasty Fisk.  On the run from the cops, Toffler resorts to hiding his consciousness in a mass-produced synthetic (Stephen Baldwin) with a built-in 24-hour lifespan.

While not perhaps not Oscar-worthy, XChange’s plethora of cyberdelic details and erotically enthralling possibilities is surprisingly enthralling and well worth hunting down.  

Gene Generation (2007)

As icky as it is sexually provocative, Gene Generation goes where science fiction movies rarely venture, showing what happens to people and the society they inhabit when we can reshape our bodies however and whenever anyone desires.

Starring the striking Bai Ling as an professional assassin trying to protect her brother (Parry Shen) from ruthless DNA Hackers, Gene Generation’s overall aesthetic tends toward the slick, wet, and generally disgusting while managing—largely due to Bai Ling’s performance— to be erotically enchanting.  

On the subject of genetic engineering, we’ve also speculated about everything from grown, not made sextech playthings to sexually super changing our bodies.

Avatar (2004)

Sharing a title and nothing else with James Cameron’s films, Avatar—also sometimes known as Cyber Wars or Matrix Hunter—is one of those unexpected treasures, like XChange, that understands you don’t need tens of millions of dollars to tell an intriguing-futuristic, sexually-enthralling story.

Dash MacKenzie (Genevieve O’Reilly), a classic forced-out-of retirement bounty hunter who ends up a mega-corporation’s crosshairs.

Virtual reality is another favorite topic of ours, which makes Avatar such a welcome addition to our list as rather than focusing on clunky hardware, it instead gives us a world where slipping in and out of cyberspace is as easy as stepping from one room to another.

Plus, it gets a special kudo for sensitively showing how our physical selves don’t need to mirror our digital avatars—and how this could be emotionally and sexually liberating for people with physical limitations.

Strange Days (1995)

On the subject of Cameron, his two-time Academy Award-winning ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow helmed our next entry, a chaotically sprawling whodunnit set during the last riotous days of 1999.

The speculative sextech side of Strange Days revolves around an illicit memory recording device, to which ex-vice cop Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes) has become hopelessly addicted, endlessly replaying when he and Faith (Juliette Lewis) were together.

Thematically akin to Douglas Trumbull’s equally excellent 1983 Brainstorm, Strange Days doesn’t shy away from the good and potentially not-so-good sides of this sort of technology—each raising the possibility of user addiction: emotional, sexual, or both.

That said, the idea of sharing memories and experiences is the stuff erotic dreams are made of.  It’s just unfortunate Strange Days, aside from an extremely brief scene, doesn’t take time to explore how this technology might positively affect the future of human sexuality.  Hopefully, other filmmakers will someday pick up the flag from Bigelow and Trumbull and take it into a more optimistic direction.

Tomorrow’s sexuality—yesterday!

Big-budget cinema experiences certainly have their place, but remember, as with any other medium, there are unexpectedly arousing erotic speculative future treasures out there waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

Part two of The Ten Great Sexual Innovations Yet To Come

In our first installment on future sex technologies, we took a look at upcoming developments in sensory tech: virtual reality, augmented reality, and direct neurostimulation.

But this time around we’re going to explore what may very well happen to the flesh and blood of humanity—and in fact how sex will no longer be just flesh and blood—by examining three promising innovations in sexual biotechnology: cybernetics, body switching, and genetic engineering.

Innovation Four: Cybernetics

Sure, Nathan S. Kline and Manfred Clynes may have coined the term cyborg in 1960, but the concept of enhancing humanity through artificial limbs and organs is actually an ancient one.

Through recent developments in direct nerve connections, exotic materials, and microscopic sensors, we are looking at a time in the not-too-distant future where we won’t just be able to replace missing or diseased organs with artificial ones—but may very well prefer them over the “real thing.”

What’s even wilder is that if you get tired of whatever new body part you’ve had installed, then you can just swap it out or upgrade it.

With artificial forms we’ll be able to turn any part of our bodies into sex organs, or use our entire bodies as one. We could make love to clouds, ocean currents, solar winds, or entire planets if we desired.

But we’d still be ourselves. This is where another huge development comes in: the technology that will allow us to become someone else.

Innovation Five: Body Switching

Okay, this one is a bit far out but the idea should be rather easy to understand. First, we begin with the basics of cyberization: direct neural interfaces. Unlike direct neural stimulation, which we chatted about last time, this isn’t just sensing using our brains, but being able to control our new artificial selves like they were our original flesh and blood bodies.

Once we have that, the next step is to link two people together: I see through your eyes, you see through mine; you raise my hand, I raise yours. With enough bandwidth—and some elegant programming—there’s no reason two people connected by wires couldn’t switch physical bodies.

Just think of the sexual possibilities: we could know, without any doubt, what it would be like to physically besomeone else. Why travel when you can step into someone else’s shoes half a world away? Want to be anyone—male, female, or a new gender altogether—for a weekend, a year, a lifetime?

There’s no reason why we couldn’t have artificial bodies designed just for sex play, with unique sensors and totally original sex components. We could share special sensual bodies like we share vacation homes: timeshare eroticism!

Flesh and blood do have their limitations, which is why we will soon see many people choosing to replace flesh and blood for more durable, and flexible, alternatives.

Many will prefer to remain in the bodies they were born in. However, via upcoming new technologies, there’s no reason they couldn’t enjoy a new world of dazzling sexuality either.

Innovation Six: Genetic Engineering

It’s sadly become a frightening concept to some, but the potential to alter the human body on a genetic level shows incredible promise in eliminating so much suffering and pain—as well as changing human sexuality in amazing ways.

We are fast approaching a time when we will be able to clone, or fabricate, pretty much any part of any person we wish. This means organ transplants without tissue rejection—as they’d be fabricated from the recipient’s own DNA—but also that we’ll be able to do incredible things with the human form.

Those with gender dysphoria could be who they always felt they should be. By rewriting our genetic code we could walk in anyone’s physical form; change ourselves for any reason. What happens to bigotry when we can literally see the world through anyone’s race, gender, orientation, age?

As with cyberization, humanity would have close to total freedom of physical form—without giving up their flesh and blood. Want to experience sex as a whale or as an elephant? Drop your gray matter into a vat-grown form of your choosing.  We could live to see a world where changing our bodies would be like changing our clothes: fancy dress, casual, or kinky.

The difficulty with cyborgs is that they still have that pesky meat brain. But with sufficient genetic engineering skill, we could see the death of … death by replacing dead or dying brain cells with new healthy ones.

Hand in hand, these two innovations—artificial organs along with new ones grown from our own DNA—mean that soon our physical selves will be restricted only by our fantasies, sexual or otherwise.

But some of the biggest changes are yet to come. In the future, we will have the ability to not just change how we see the world (real and artificial) or how we interact with it (again, real and artificial), but explore the truly limitless domain of consciousness.
