Kiwi, by The Pelvic People, helps relax the vaginal opening when entry pain is a problem, as happens with vaginismus and other conditions. Kiwi works by releasing internal and external tension with shallow insertion. It has two motors with different frequencies and also provides clitoral stimulation(for blood flow and relaxation.

Luddi’s Ziggy is a vibrating pad that is foldable, flexible, and versatile, allowing for many hands-free options. According to the website, “Ziggy’s versatile design allows it to be used in many ways. Rub it, tuck it into your underwear, sit or lay on it, stroke with it, or use it between partners.” Ziggy has eight speeds, an accessible charging pad, and though it is not inexpensive, it’s like getting several toys in one.

But will DoxyPEP ever replace safe(r) sex?

The sexual health-related telehealth provider Wisp’s release of their new multiple post-exposure medication, DoxyPEP, has a number of medical experts wondering if it might be signaling a turning point in the prevention and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

Dr. Laura Purdy, Wisp’s chief medical officer, explained to Askmen that DoxyPEP is “Similar to the traditional morning-after pill that’s taken to prevent unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex, DoxyPEP can be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex to stop the spread of certain sexually transmitted infections.” 

Dr. Purdy further notes, “While Doxycycline has been commonly used to treat multiple types of bacterial infections, expanding the use cases for this existing drug is an important step in providing sexual wellness solutions for those who have engaged in sexual activity and are concerned about STI risks.”

Like how PrEP is used as a “morning after pill” in potentially reducing the likelihood of developing HIV from unprotected sex, when taken as prescribed DoxyPEP does the same for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. 

However, Dr. Purdy cautions that “DoxyPEP doesn’t protect against Mpox, HIV, herpes, or other viral infections” or parasite-based infections like crabs.

In the same article, Avril Clarke, the sexologist and intimacy coordinator at Erika Lust, raises the point that while DoxyPEP may be transformative in aiding in the reduction of STI cases, it’s important for sexually active individuals not to develop a false sense of security; “Barrier methods of contraception, like condoms, were and still are the only way to protect oneself from the transmission of STIs and HIV during sex.”

Not the solution, but maybe part of one?

Clarke also points out that DoxyPEP is not without its side effects, not least of which is its expense—which might place it beyond the financial reach of its target market of male-identified persons who sexually engage with trans women and other men: 

“Checking in with a doctor before and after going through the process is crucial. Additionally, depending on your location, it is not always available for free or at a low cost and often causes harsh side effects, including nausea, rash, headaches, and fatigue. The financial, emotional, and physical distress that might come from needing to take PEP should not be overlooked.”

Medications can only do so much 

Even though post-exposure preventive treatments like DoxyPEP and PrEP are unable to address every sexually transmitted infection, it might be possible to reduce their social/psychological impact by upping the promotion of safe(r) sex practices to cut down on the number of people who need to take an STI morning after pill.

When interviewed by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School Of Public Health, Matthew Hamill, MBChB, PhD, and a Medicine and Population, Family and Reproductive Health assistant professor, was asked if he thinks DoxyPEP is a good choice for patients who may have been exposed to STIs: “I do, but I don’t think it’s a panacea. I think that we have to be careful in terms of the advice that we give to patients so that we couch this as one intervention in the suite of interventions that can help people have maximum sexual health.” 

Dr Hamill added, “It is important to be honest about the limitations of our knowledge, the limitations in terms of efficacy of the medication, and also to be upfront about some of the possible adverse effects. This is a relatively new endeavor in terms of prevention. There’s a lot we still have to learn.”

That includes ascertaining DoxyPEP’s efficacy for people reporting penetrative vaginal sex. For people with vaginas, insisting on condom use is still the best prevention.

The ambulance down in the valley

Considering the question of how post-exposure drugs like DoxyPEP might play an as-yet unknown part in altering human sexuality, particularly regarding our attitudes towards preventing and treating sexually transmitted infections, the music of John Denver comes to mind.

Specifically, in “The Ambulance Down In The Valley,” where he sings that there’s no reason to take precautions along a treacherous stretch of mountain road because, you guessed it, there’s help waiting at the bottom.

The point I’m trying to make is that human beings often tend to look at technological breakthroughs, particularly when they frequently involve frightening situations like contracting sexually transmitted infections, as if they’re the magic solution we’ve all been waiting for: why take precautions when you can just pop a pill in the morning and be right as rain?

The truth is medications like DoxyPEP are groundbreaking, but they can never replace taking responsibility for you and your partner’s sexual health—as in doing everything possible to ensure no one’s exposed to anything.

In other words, making sex safe(r) and not depending on the ambulance, clinic, or post office down in the valley.

Unboxing and Using

The box contents are simple: a Pearl3 vibrator, a charging cord, and a simple set of instructions with a few pictures. You’ll want to charge it first of course. A blinking red light shows charging in process. A green light says your Pearl3 is ready to play. 

For anything more complicated than solo play, you must go to the website for a PDF of its manual. Fortunately, solo use of the Pearl3 is relatively straightforward. You hit the universal control/power button once and you’re able to connect with the app via BlueTooth. 

Press the power button again and you access its touch control feature. The Pearl3 responds to the strength or delicacy of your grasp or body responses. Press the power button again to access a sequence of five increasingly intense vibrations, both steady and intermittent.

Interactive Features

For all its apparent, classic simplicity, the Pearl3 is a sophisticated device designed to be wildly interactive, via the FeelConnect app. Pearl3 has an implanted AI chip which enables the user to do everything from program custom vibration patterns of varying length and intensity (which can be named and recorded) to connecting with other Kiiroo devices (such as other Pearls and the famous Keon strokers and sex machine). 

The Pearl3 can even connect with webcam sites, and adult VR games and videos. However, these features can only be accessed through the FeelConnect app.

The app controls

The controls section of the app, however, seems simpler than connecting with a partner or content. Located at the bottom of the app’s homepage, which includes home, friends, media, and control options” Control gives you a choice of Touch Control (from the app), Custom Patterns, Clap Control to create vibrations from noises (like a whip crack or a paddle?), and Device to Device so that one vibe can rule them all. 

Touch Control. At right there are three oblong shapes which are used to control intensity but I couldn’t figure what I was supposed to move to get the thing going. Then I realized I was supposed to move the circle that had a zero on it. The higher I moved it on the screen, the higher the number. 

Patterns. I moved my finger around on the phone screen to create something I called and saved as “Never Use It.” It was the most jagged, wonky vibration imaginable and I can see that making pleasing patterns is an art that takes practice. 

Clap Control. I tried clapping) but the Pearl3 didn’t react, only staying silent and inert. In all honesty, I’m not sure what the point of this feature is.

Device to Device. I didn’t have a device to add, so I just looked at this option as it supposedly enables the user to add a main device and then the controlled device. I can see a lot of possibilities for this kind of partner play. 

Downsides

The FeelConnect app is confusing. Let me give you an example. The home page gives you the choice of connecting to your partner or content. Then there are ads. Then there is another portion which says you can, one, control your partner’s device from a distance, two, make video calls and chat, and three, connect the Kiiroo device to the interactive content of your choosing

To connect with a partner via the Friends tab you need to first create a profile, which can be made visible or invisible. I passed for the moment as it seemed like too much trouble.

When I hit the connect with content option, I was asked to scan a QR code on the website where I want to connect. Okay, fair enough. But then I am also asked to give permission for the app to use my camera in order to scan the code. But my QR setting is already enabled on my phone! All that seemed again like too much trouble, especially as I didn’t have a website picked out.

User friendly for solo play, more difficult for interactive use

I played with the Kiiroo Pearl3 several times before writing this review. With its rather steep learning curve, it took awhile to get used to the controls and understand their potential. My biggest issue was having to go online to get the user’s manual. When I want to use a toy, I want to use the toy, not hunt through a website or app for instructions.

I also wasn’t thrilled with it at first—particularly as the g-spot stimulation feature means very little to me as a person with bladder prolapse. But once I began to enjoy penetration and the vulva stimulation aspects of its unique texture and vibration, I felt a lot happier with it and would consider it a top five toy in my collection. 

I say Pearl3 is worth the money, especially if you and a partner or two can figure out the interactive aspects and make it really work for you.

“Wow” and then some!

I’m tempted to gush (no pun intended), but it was an absolute pleasure to review Lelo’s new triple stimulation massager, the Enigma Wave. 

According to its product page, The Enigma Wave utilizes “Signature WaveMotion technology for mesmerizing G-spot stimulation. This triple vibrator lets you simultaneously enjoy a powerful sonic wave stimulation on the clitoris while the insertable tail vibrates and moves inside you using patented WaveMotion technology for an all-encompassing experience.” 

It does all that. Yes it does. And it’s so quiet, it practically purrs. 

Functional and fantastic

This was my first time using any of the Lelo Enigma toys so I found it helpful to consult the website’s “how to use” page. And then, I unboxed it.

I found myself handling a stylish, upscale cyber purple device, but it’s also available in black. The curved, bulb-shaped handle is a comfortable, ergonomic design and the controls face the user. Its smooth plastic finish, tinted like an iridescent beetle, is also pleasant to touch. 

The Enigma Wave has eight settings, produced by a triple-treat combination of wave, vibration, and its gear motor. Each motor delivers a wide range of stimulations catering to clitoral and vaginal erogenous zones. 

Its insertable tail vibrates while mimicking a finger-like motion as its sonic waves and gentle pulses excite the user’s clitoral area. This groundbreaking combination leads to intense pleasure and satisfying blended orgasms.

The Enigma Wave is made of body safe silicone and ABS plastic. It has three control buttons illuminated by LEDS. I particularly appreciate its safety feature which switches the whole thing off after 20 minutes of inactivity.

It’s also fully waterproof and easy to clean. In regards to battery life, it requires a full, two hour charge for an equal amount of playtime.  

The Enigma Wave comes with a USB-charging power cord, a satin storage pouch, and a warranty registration card. A detailed instruction manual with tiny print was included in the box. And I appreciated the sample of Lelo Personal Moisturizer. 

Can you use it hands free? Not exactly

Lelo’s website explains their Enigma Wave as stimulating the glans and inner structure of the clitoris with what they refer to as using what it calls Sensonic Technology: Without making direct contact, ENIGMA Wave sonic waves offer fast yet gentle clitoral stimulation for immense pleasure.” 

It does this without making direct contact with the clitoral glans. Indeed, if you hold the opening above the glans, you—like myself—will feel all manner of pleasant fluttering sensations that become increasingly delightful and intense. And because the controls face you and are just a tiny thumb-movement away, you can increase and decrease the sensations at will. 

The internal fingerlike wavelike motions and G-spot stimulation were pleasant and, for me, felt just right at every speed. In short, The Enigma Wave lulls you into sensuality while also stimulating you sexually. So much so, I found I liked it very much. 

The toy is designed and balanced in such a way that it will stay in place hands free. At least one reviewer on the Lelo website reported using the Enigma Wave this way. 

I wanted to know what that would be like. In this case, hands-free means the clitoral stimulation opening needs to rest directly on or near your clitoral glans. The feeling is  different than having the opening hover above.  Though direct stimulation might be a little much for some people. If you want to try this, I would suggest using the lowest setting and go easy. 

Downsides? There are a few

I too often found the Enigma Wave’s controls confusing. That and I needed to read its manual to understand how to turn the thing on. However, as mentioned earlier, the manual has a tiny print. I accessed a larger print PDF manual at the Lelo website.

This is a problem because not everyone, even in this day and age, has computer access. And not everyone wants to turn on their computer, log in, and read a manual when they really just want to go at it with their newest toy.

Plus, length matters. The recharging cord, like many other sex toys, is only 20 inches (50.8 CM) long. I don’t know about you, but in my house, most outlets are near the floor, except for kitchen and bathroom counters. A longer cord would’ve made it much  easier  to put this device out of reach of my cats. And if you have canines, a longer cord might prevent your Enigma Wave from being used as a chew toy.

The packaging is stylish, however the gold print on the black box is far too small, making it practically impossible to read, especially if you have vision difficulties. Speaking of packaging, why not give its box a slot for its 20-inch long USB charging cord so you can keep it safe while recharging it? 

Orgasmic Revelation? You bet!

This is the first toy in a long time that made me want to take it to bed for a long weekend. I found it to be strangely soothing as well as exciting, and multiple orgasms were easily had. 

My recommendation: read the product reviews on the Lelo site and make up your mind. From what I read, very few folks had a less than stellar experience, mostly due to position and how well or not it fits but I think it’s safe to say for many people who have a vagina, vulva, and clitoris, this triple-motor toy could easily become their  go-to favorite. 

If you’re intrigued by the thought of powerful sonic waves stimulating your clitoris while an insertable tail delivers a satisfying G-spot massage, reach for the Enigma Wave. You’ll be glad you did.
