Over sixty is sexy: “I’ll have more of what she’s having”

A new study has concluded that more older women in the United States are using sextoys, and having more orgasms when they do, in both solo and partnered sex. These conclusions are based on a representative sample of 3,001 female-identified respondents over the age of 60.

A November 26th press release from The Menopause Society just announced these results, based on a study conducted by researchers from The Kinsey Institute and Department of Gender Studies, both at Indiana University at Bloomington, and was fielded in 2023 by Prodege, a professional data collection site.

Though it’s tempting to describe these results as the Golden Age of Sextech meets the Golden Years and leave it at that, the truth is, one of the reasons for this is hardly surprising. Researchers said “COVID-19 may also have influenced the use of sextoys, since reports indicated a spike in the sale of sextoys during the pandemic.”

Of the women who reported masturbating at least once in the last year, 46.4% used toys almost always or always during masturbation, compared with 5.1% who used sextoys almost always or always during partnered sex. Those who reported almost always or always using sextoys during masturbation were significantly more likely to report always or almost always having an orgasm compared with the lower frequency sextoy users.

The researchers also suggest that due to a growing number of older women living alone, sex-toy companies have recognized them as a unique market, increasingly designing and marketing toys specifically for women in this demographic.

Someone old, something new—try a toy and don’t be blue!

Let’s face it, the physical changes that come with aging aren’t always enjoyable. For people with female-assigned bodies, some of those changes include the thinning of vaginal tissue, leading to dryness and discomfort; differences in hormone levels; and other results of menopause and beyond.

These changes, combined with factors such as the loss of a partner or partners, illnesses or other physical challenges, and feelings of being invisible and undesirable in a culture that seemingly only values youthful beauty, make it easy enough to give up on your sex life and just f-f-f-fade away (Boomers, you’ll get this reference, I hope).

Or at least, that’s how it used to be. Now, with the internet absolutely bursting with sextoy companies, especially ones that are female or queer-owned, and an array of clitoral, vaginal, anal, and nipple toys, plus lubricants—not to mention immensely useful senior sex ed websites like Joan Price’s—the only real barrier to accessing new pleasures might be financial.

Even the American Association of Retired People (AARP) has gotten into supporting erotic elders with blogs like “10 Top Sex Ed Tips for Those 50 and Older.” Better yet, try Kinkly’s “How to Have a Fulfilling Sex Life After 50” as it’s better informed.

Why not enjoy yourself more than once a year?

The benefits of an active sex life or fairly frequent bouts of self-pleasure are well-known. WebMD lists diminished stress, improved sleep, boosted immune system, pain relief, and many other advantages of sexual intimacy, with Healthline and AARP having similar lists.

That said, these sorts of lists may be discouraging for single people, which is where masturbation and sextoys come in; especially important for people to know who live in female-shaped bodies.

Back to the study: 1,451 of the 3,001 participants said they masturbate, but a surprising 89 of them only did it once a year! 528 said they did it a few times a year. 394 said they self-pleasured a few times a month, 137 said they did it a few times a week and 10—“those few, those happy few” (Shakespearean scholars, you’ll forgive the paraphrase from Henry V, I hope)—did it at least once a day.

649 respondents said they always experienced orgasm during masturbation and another 462 said they almost always did. 212 always used sextoys during masturbation and 166 almost always did. However, 814 of the 1,451 respondents had at least tried using a sextoy at least once during masturbation. The most popular toy types for both masturbation and partner sex were penetrative toys and external vibrators.

Almost all of the respondents who said they self-pleasure indicated they would like to have more sex, though it is not clear if it was partnered sex they wanted more of). But since only 612 of 3,001 respondents said they had partner sex at least once within the last year, we might assume this is what they meant.

Give yourself over to absolute pleasure

Life is short and its pleasures may be fleeting, so why not reach for a sextoy or a

partner—or both—every chance you get? The more pleasure, the better, right? When you feel crummy or in pain, a jolt of joy might be just what you need. We all need to permit ourselves to enjoy what our bodies can give us, more often than not.

But maybe many people don’t, because they don’t understand the benefits of pleasure, or feel intimidated or shy about exploring their options. The researchers suggest that older women and female-identified people would benefit “from information from health care professionals about sex, masturbation, and orgasm. Studies indicate, however, that only a small proportion of older adults seek professional help for sexual concerns.” And that’s a shame, because professional help does exist!

The significance of this study, and others like it, cannot be overstated:

Rather than supporting ageist assumptions about lack of interest in sextoys or orgasm among older adults, this study demonstrates that many older adults use sextoys and that their use promotes orgasm. In this regard, there may be more similarities than differences between younger and older adults. Orgasm, in turn, may promote positive health outcomes that could improve overall health and well-being in older adults.

‘Nuff said.

If things continue the way there are now—and there’s lots of evidence that they will—in a few years we may be seeing a whole range of objects with the ability to become practically anything.

From fabrics resembling metal or even wood, these smart materials will be able to change color, shape. and even texture. They’ll be able to morph into whatever we’ll need in an instant.

The sexual possibilities, to put it lightly, could be tremendous.

Welcome to the world of programmable matter

Currently, the state of programmable matter is still in its infancy. But researchers are optimistic that with forthcoming breakthroughs, we will soon be seeing a transformable future.

There is a range of approaches to creating substances that can be altered on command. One way is using electromagnetic fields to interact with materials suffused with ferromagnetic particles. Turn on the juice and the stuff could take on an array of useful shapes.

Another approach is what is called claytronics: basically a form of nanotechnology where a substance is mostly made up of atom-sized machines.

RECOMMENDED READ: With Sugar on Top: Tasty New VR Tech Flavors the Future

Then there’s the idea of smart plastics. Here the idea is the material would, after receiving a programmed command, expand or contract like artificial muscles. There’s even the possibility it could change color using something like the synthetic version of an octopus’s chromatophores, microscopic dots of color that can be switched on and off to create almost any hue desired.

A shape-changing future

The implications for programmable matter are astounding. Why have a whole toolbox when you can one nanotech device that can become whatever you need when you need it?

Why have a wardrobe full of clothes when a single garment can shift from summer to winter wear at a moment’s notice? Why have a house full of gadgets when one programmable blob of plastic can transform into anything on command? Why have a dressing that needs to be adjusted and changed when you can have a bandage that not only monitors your injury, but applies or decreases pressure and heat to optimize healing?

True, some of this is probably some decades away. But even extrapolating only a few years ahead, the potential for programmable materials is still intriguing—especially when it comes to programmable materials and sex.

The ultimate sex toy

For one thing, imagine a sex toy smart enough not just to learn what you like but also be able to become what you need. Smoothly, seamlessly, it could gain or loose texture, get warmer or colder, or expand or contract by reading your level of arousal.

A programmable matter sexbot could, when not in use, look like a generic figure. But switched on it could morph into a lifelike copy of whoever or whatever you want.

Let’s say you have a long-distance lover. They hook up to a transmission system and connect your robot’s sensory input to wherever they might be. In response, your bot’s smart plastic outer covering becomes a facsimile of their real self—or whatever you and they decide would be fun to play with that day.

As the tech grows even more advanced, it’s possible that our clothing—in addition to being able to change style on a whim—could become a form of wearable sex tech. Feeling amorous? The very fabric you are wearing could contract, expand, or actually even move in a way to scratch that itch.

And, beyond even that, there might be an age when many humans have become cyborgs; replacing their original organic organs with programmable matter parts. For them, their genitals could be whatever they desired them to be, for whatever sex they wanted to have. It would be an age of nearly limitless possibilities—limited only by imagination.

The only certainty is change

While it’s unclear exactly what form the materials of the near and far future may take, one thing is certain: with the way things are going, it will be a world where the only definite thing is that it will be changeable.

Survey reveals how intentional pleasure practices—like sex toys and open communication—shape lasting desire

We-Vibe, a leading manufacturer of high tech sex toys, just released its 2025 Long-Term Relationships Data Report and the findings—though not surprising to experts in human sexuality—underscore the importance of open erotic communication and a shared commitment to pleasure.

The survey’s findings also point to the benefits of frequent sex toy use and regularly scheduled romantic dates to achieve an overall sense of physical and erotic fulfillment for those in long-term relationships (LTR).

As We-Vibe’s resident sex and relationship expert, Dr. Shamyra Howard, LCSW and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, said in the company’s press release, “Sex toys can significantly enhance sexual satisfaction by increasing pleasure, expanding erotic possibilities, and helping individuals better understand their bodies.”

Howard added, “For couples, they can be tools of exploration and connection, offering ways to play, experiment, and bridge desire differences. They also take pressure off performance and make room for pleasure, including more fun, relaxed, and satisfying sexual experiences.”

Sex toys add sparkle and spark communication

The We-Vibe report found “people who use sex toys together report more frequent sex and greater satisfaction.”

The numbers are impressive:

45% of people in LTRs own at least one sex toy.

52.7% use sex toys with their partner (226 respondents), and among those:

53.5% report orgasming every time they have sex, versus 46.4% who don’t use them.

80% of men and 83% of women who use sex toys report being satisfied with their sex lives.

Satisfaction rises to 82% among sex toy users vs. 74.3% in the general LTR group.

Sex toy users are more sexually active:

71.24% have sex at least once a week compared to 59.2% of all respondents.

Nearly 2/3 (62%) have either given or would gift a sex toy to their partner.

75.7% are open to using sex toys if their partner initiates.

This last result suggests even if you’re shy about introducing a sex toy into your relationship, the chances are good that you’ll get a positive response!

Build trust, deepen intimacy

Intimacy always contains a certain amount of emotional vulnerability—especially when met with nonjudgmental acceptance—but who knew that frequent pillow talk actually increases the chance of orgasming? According to the survey results:

A whopping 86.99% of those who regularly talk about sex (315 respondents) with their partner orgasm every time they have sex—whereas only 3.49% who rarely or never talk about sex orgasm every time.

84.32% of sexually satisfied respondents (319) regularly discuss sex.

73.4% of all LTR participants report regular communication about sex.

People who use sex toys are even more likely to talk openly:

89.38% of toy users engage in regular sexual communication.

Dr. Howard comments, ”Communication is the cornerstone of a fulfilling sex life. Talking about sex isn’t just about logistics, it’s about creating emotional safety, fostering vulnerability, and nurturing connection, all of which are essential for a thriving sexual relationship.”

Dedicated quality time

Another key finding stressed the importance of “intentional intimacy.” The report says “68% of those satisfied with their sex lives go on at least one date night per month.”

Scheduling does not just create a regular opportunity for sex to occur. The act of committing to such time signals ongoing interest and desire and the mutual importance each person places on this aspect of the relationship.

Plus, it’s safe to say few things are as exciting and stimulating as feeling desired and anticipating the fulfillment of desire.

The demographics of a self-selected group

Though these findings herald the benefits of focusing on sex and pleasure, the 429 survey respondents did not comprise a representative sample of American demographics. This doesn’t mean the data is not valuable. It just means the results of this survey cannot be scientifically extrapolated to a larger population.

The respondents were predominantly heterosexual (93%), 74% were White, almost 78% were married, and all were in relationships lasting five years or longer. Of the 429 people who took the survey, 233 self-identified as women, 193 self-identified as men, and 3 said they were non-binary.

Other ethnic groups included Black/African American people (12%), Hispanic/Latino (almost 8%), and Asian (3.5%). Other sexual orientations included gay/lesbian (2.8%) and bisexual (3.4%). People who said they were queer, asexual, or who didn’t want to share were 0.2% in other categories.

The average age was 46.3 years. People in the 18-24 years age group were the least represented and there were slightly more respondents in the 55-65 group than in other age categories. Unfortunately data was not collected for people over 65.

The survey also seemed to assume monogamy, as questions about other relationship configurations did not seem to be asked.

Takeaway for long-term satisfaction

Numerous peer-reviewed studies address the problem of maintaining and cultivating desire in long-term relationships, once these relationships have passed the first flush of new relationship energy. For example, in 2018 Mark and Lasslo’s systematic review of sixty-four studies stated:

“The most universally experienced sexual response is sexual desire. Though research on this topic has increased in recent years, low and high desire are still problematized in clinical settings and the broader culture. However, despite knowledge that sexual desire ebbs and flows both within and between individuals, and that problems with sexual desire are strongly linked to problems with relationships, there is a critical gap in understanding the factors that contribute to maintaining sexual desire in the context of relationships.”

Based on their review, Mark and Lasslo created a three-part conceptual model of “maintaining sexual desire in long-term relationships.” The interpersonal portion of their model—pertaining to what goes on between the partners—included factors of “responsiveness to partner, emotional intimacy, communication, self-expansion, sexual compatibility, satisfaction, and relationship length.”

Though only gathered through a simple survey, We-Vibe’s data is a valuable contribution to research “gap[s] in understanding the factors” that impact desire.

As We-Vibe concluded: “Sexual satisfaction in long-term relationships is achievable and common, but it thrives on intentional habits. Regular communication, shared experimentation (like sex toys), and date nights play a powerful role in maintaining passion well beyond the honeymoon phase.”

US tariffs could dim rosy industry forecasts

As with many products, pleasure devices may have already become considerably more expensive, thanks in large part to the new tariffs on goods imported from China—which, according to the New York Times, includes 70% of sex toys and sextech devices.

For anecdotal confirmation I inspected about twenty toys from my personal and toy review stash—designed for a variety of uses and body parts—and found all were made in China. It didn’t matter if the products were from Lovense, Hot Octopuss, Lelo, Kiroo, Lora DiCarlo, OhNut, or anyone else, they all shared that common origin.

But the problem is far bigger than individual decisions about whether to select a Bluetooth-enabled device or an ordinary vibrator.

US sextech fuels a vibrant, growing industry

Sex Tech Market Size and Trends, a global report by Grand View Research, says North America is the “the largest revenue share of 32.2% in 2024” and people in the US bought more sex tech products than anyone else on the continent.

Meanwhile, a 2022 survey mentioned in Interested Engineering said 163 million Americans, 18 years or older, own sex toys. And a 2022 survey published by Statista Research in 2023 reported 82% of American women own at least one sex toy.

Is it any wonder Bedbible’s Sextech Industry Market Report & Statistics (May 2024), said, “The sextech market is part of the global sex toy market which is estimated to be 40 billion dollars. The US sex toy market is estimated to be 15.6 billion worth. So sextech is part of markets that have a huge size.” Bedbible also said the US sextech market is (or was) “more than 50% of the global sex tech industry.”

Grand View Research predicted growth “at a compound annual growth rate of 16.77% from 2025 to 2030” and that it would be worth “USD 107.85 billion by 2030” for the global sex tech market.

Sadly, these remarkable figures and rosy predictions for global industry growth may

crumble now, given how tariffs against China—which range from 20-25%—will likely increase costs, discouraging US consumption.

Made in China

It’s not just that over 70% of sex toys are manufactured in China, but the country is also “home to a diverse range of companies producing sex toys, apps, and other sex-related products and services,” according to Grand View Research.

Therefore China’s diversity of products, such as highly popular Bluetooth-enabled devices, means every sexy thing imported to the US will probably end up costing more.

Most consumers now seem to understand the impact of tariffs on cost. But small and medium-sized businesses such as retailers and distributors, will also bear the brunt.

Tariffs will hurt small businesses, especially women- and queer-owned retailers

In the last couple of decades there has been a growing number of women and queer people in the US founding sex-positive adult product companies and/or retail businesses.

The earliest retail examples are Eve’s Garden, founded in 1974 in NYC by Dell Williams, and Good Vibrations, started by Joani Blank in San Francisco in 1977. Since then, generations of entrepreneurs have established friendly and informative ways to learn about and shop for adult products.

Kismet Tyler, owner and “head queer” of Overlap Self-Care Superstore in Springfield, OR, is one such entrepreneur. Tyler told me,

“I’ve been scared about the cost rising on imported toys (i.e. A LOT of toys) since the talks about tariffs started. I absolutely have fears about costs going up. As much as I try to stock USA made/based brands, I believe even those makers will face supply chain issues for the raw goods needed to make their products. Customers have not expressed concern though I can say one of my vendors sent out an email that some specific brands have vowed to absorb tariff costs and not change the price of their goods”

Tyler added, “I will say it inspired me to begin sculpting and making my own adult toys with USA sourced products both for fun, and just in case.”

Going forward

There’s probably not much we can do about the increasingly higher prices on sex toys and tech while the current Chinese tariffs on China remain in force.

However, we can support small businesses, especially those owned by people in marginalized groups.

And we can take heart in knowing entrepreneurs like Kismet Tyler, and the communities they serve, are more than willing to use their creativity to keep sex positivity alive and well even during these difficult times.

Hustler Hollywood arrangement takes pleasure shopping to a whole new level

There you are, all tucked in for the night when, out of the blue, you and your partner—or partners, as the case might be—are overwhelmingly, shall we say, in the mood.

But instead of climbing back into your clothes, getting behind the wheel, and driving to the nearest sextoy emporium, you simply only need to pick up your phone, fire up the DoorDash app, and, viola, everything you want is delivered straight to your door.

Too good to be true? Fortunately, if you live in one of the fifty-nine US cities included in the new partnership between DoorDash and Hustler Hollywood then you too can get in on the fun—without leaving the comfort of your home or even needing to get dressed.

Will this innovative service prove to be a positive, sex-affirming glimpse of what’s to come, or could there be unexpected, potentially dangerous repercussions of sharing the details of your sex life with a complete stranger?

“Everything you need”

In the adult industry trade journal XBIZ, Mike Goldblatt, DoorDash’s Vice President of New Verticals Partnerships, explained the collaboration, “We’re always expanding our retail offerings to make DoorDash the ultimate destination for everything you need. We’re thrilled to welcome Hustler Hollywood to the platform just in time for Valentine’s Day, making it more convenient than ever for adults to discreetly show a wide selection of intimate essentials for on-demand delivery across the US.”

RECOMMENDED READ: From Feathers to Flesh: AI Can’t Handle Sextoy Holiday Shopping

As this DoorDash page shows, it’s now possible to arrange home delivery from Hustler Hollywood’s extensive collection of high-tech sextoys, condoms, lubricants, lingerie, special gift bundles, and other sex-related products, even BDSM sextoys, restraints, floggers, and more.

Liz Flynt, Hustler Hollywood’s Chairperson added “We’ve always been about making intimacy exciting, accessible and fun—and now, with our DoorDash partnership, we’re taking that to a whole new level. This is a first-of-its-kind collaboration, allowing people to discreetly order our most popular items and have them delivered exactly when you need them.”

Do you know who your Dasher is?

In common with ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft, as stated on its site, DoorDash, via Checkr, uses current Motor Vehicle and Criminal History Reports to pre-screen its would-be delivery personnel.

Once approved, Dashers found to have threatened, assaulted, sexually harassed, or discriminated against customers can, as Doordash euphemistically puts it, find themselves permanently “deactivated.”

All fine and good, however, it’s one thing for a Dasher to deliver pizzas and quite another if they are assigned to go to a sex shop and pick up not merely an anonymous brown-paper-wrapped package but have to enter the store and personally select … well, pretty much everything Hustler Hollywood has on its shelves.

Convenience versus privacy

The National Women’s Law Center’s meticulously documented an alarming number of pharmacists who have flat-out refused to sell sex or birth control-related medications, often citing a religious objection, so what if a Dasher similarly declines an order?

If DoorDash’s employee standards hold true, they’d naturally expect to be either written up or subsequently “deactivated.”

Not to sound alarmist, but what if instead of voicing their disapproval openly, the driver shared information about their delivery with another person: a third party who then might use the information to emotionally, financially, or physically devastate an innocent person’s life?

Worst yet, unless a covert connection like this were likely to be exposed, there would not be a clear-cut link between what was assumed to be a secure Hustler Hollywood delivery and the nightmare that might follow.

Be careful, be cautious, be safe

It’s unfortunately easy to forget flesh and blood individuals are behind every apparently impersonal, automated app like Amazon or services such as DoorDash, and while most don’t care what they’re shipping or delivering, a few might be waiting for an opportunity to abuse the trust we’ve given them.

Is the DoorDash, Hustler Hollywood partnership a disaster waiting to happen? Not at all, as it could allow people access to sexual pleasure-affirming products they otherwise might be too distant, shy, or scared to purchase personally.

It’s just before placing your order you want to take a moment to weigh the good with what could be not-so-good about having a stranger do your sextoy shopping for you.

A lot’s certainly changed in the six years since the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas awarded the 2019 Innovation Award to the Osé vibrator, made by Lora DiCarlo’s sextoy company, and then almost immediately rescinded it. Then, thanks to a groundswell of overwhelmingly negative publicity, publicly apologizing and formally restoring the award..

2025’s recent event featured an impressive number of innovative products, including several from well-respected manufacturers such as Lovense, Ohdoki, Motorbunny, and others.

Hello, Sensera

A relative newcomer to the industry, Sensera took home an Artificial intelligence honorable mention for its vulva-focused sextoy which they enthusiastically refere to as a “sexual wellness device.”

Made primarily out of medical grade, body-safe silicone, the Sensera comes with three interchangeable capsules containing specifically formulated lubricants, automatically dispensed when the toy’s array of sensors and built-in AI indicates when they’re needed the most: either to enhance user pleasure or just to make the experience more comfortable.

Ohdoki’s The Handy

Known for its advanced sextoy products, Ohdoki’s updated Handy stroker turned more than a few heads, particularly its optional new, heavy-duty articulated mount for a flexible, thoroughly hands-free experience.

The Handy’s interactivity has also been improved, boasting smartphone app compatibility for supported adult content, increased to over thirty thousand different videos across many platforms, and also to wirelessly join two Handy’s together.

Hopefully, The Handy’s newest model has addressed some of the precious one’s issues, like its lack of an onboard battery—meaning it has to stay plugged in to work—and how annoyingly difficult it was to get it and its smartphone app to talk to each other.

Feeling the G’s with Motorbunny

Another familiar respected sextech company, Motorbunny’s unique approach to haptic gaming made quite a few headlines.

Basically, a USB-C accessory for PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S, or Nintendo Switch controllers, when attached, the PlayMate Fluffer Haptic Relay Plug-in relays the player’s actions to any of Motorbunny’s five, Bluetooth-enabled pleasure devices.

RECOMMENDED READ: From Feathers to Flesh: AI Can’t Handle Sextoy Holiday Shopping

As Gizmodo put it, “If you’ve ever wanted one of your favorite video games to take your sex level to the next level, the Motorbunny PlayMate Fluffer is the way to go.”

Ohdoki: Something for everyone

Clearly not a company willing to pass on a good—and pleasurable—opportunity, Ohdoki also unveiled The Oh!, a unique vulva-owner’s toy that, rather than using mechanical vibrations, instead employs ultrasonic waves to hit its owner’s, shall we say, high notes.

Similar to other smart sextoys, The Oh! is wirelessly operable from its companion app or can be set to respond to the user’s choice of music. As with The Handy, it’s unsure if The Oh! exclusively uses Wifi or Bluetooth as well.

As I don’t yet have one to carefully examine and review, the Oh! appears to be less elegant, perhaps less easy to use, than toys from other companies. But, as they say, the proof is in the pudding, so it may end up being an effective and enjoyable plaything.

Lovense, Lovense, and more Lovense

A personal favorite, Lovense garnered a lot of what seems to be a great deal of much-deserved attention for its smart-sensor equipped, touch-responsive Mission 2 and the Solace Pro, an impressively high-speed AI-supporting stroker.

Readers may already be familiar with the Solace Pro, as we gave it several enthusiastic thumbs up for its butter-smooth connectivity, well-put-together desk bracket, and while boasting an extremely fast stroke speed, felt more like a flesh-and-blood sexual experience and never once like having stuck oneself into a mechanical device.

CES 2026—we’ll see

It might be six years between Lora DiCarlo’s extremely poor treatment by CES officials, hypocritical considering the organizer’s other problematic policy decisions such as ostracizing sextech developers while at the same time allowing scantily clad booth babes to show off their wares, however this year’s event appears to be at least a partial step in the right direction.

Moving forward we hope that CES won’t repeat its past mistakes with regard to sextech businesses, especially in light of the market’s projected billion-dollar growth between now and 2029.

We can only wish that over the next year, CES, like many other trade shows, will finally recognize the financial, psychological, and sexual empowerment the industry has to offer—and not stick their heads in the sand or surrender yet again to anti-pleasure hysteria.
