How the internet transformed sex work into a safer and empowering industry

Sex work is one of the world’s oldest professions, and represents an exchange of intimacy, desire, and companionship that has existed in every culture and era. Yet, despite its long history, sex work has constantly evolved alongside society itself. From ancient temples to urban streets, the way sex work is practiced has always reflected shifts in society.

Today, we are living through one of its most transformative moments: the digital era. What once took place in physical spaces has now crossed into the online world. The internet has not only changed how sex work operates, but it has redefined what it means to be a sex worker.

A Brief History of Sex Work

Historically, sex work was rooted in proximity and visibility. Encounters took place in brothels, taverns, and later, on city streets or within nightlife venues. For centuries, the work existed on society’s margins: regulated, stigmatized, and often criminalized.

While attitudes varied across cultures and time, the power dynamics stayed largely the same. Workers were dependent on madams, pimps, or brothel owners, who controlled access to clients and profits. Safety and autonomy were not guaranteed, and legal protections were minimal.

Even as the 20th century brought social progress, stigma persisted. It wasn’t until the advent of the internet that sex work began to escape the confines of physical geography and claim new ground in the digital space.

The Digital Shift: Sex Work Meets the Internet

The arrival of the internet in the 1990s marked the beginning of a massive transformation. Early online classified ads, personal blogs, and chat rooms offered new ways to connect discreetly with clients. But it was with the rise of social media, digital payment systems, and specialized marketplaces that sex work truly expanded and diversified.

Today, the industry spans a wide spectrum of offerings: from custom photos and videos to sexting, camming, audio erotica, subscription content, and the sale of worn or personalized items. Anyone with an internet connection can now participate—whether as a full-time creator, a side hustle, or simply as a hobby. The digital space has democratized entry into sex work, empowering people of all genders, body types and backgrounds to define their own version of sex work.

Crucially, this shift has also made anonymity possible. Workers can engage from the privacy of their own homes, using pseudonyms and secure platforms to protect their identity while connecting with audiences around the world. More than a change in logistics, the digital era has changed lives, allowing sex workers to operate independently, stay safe, and run their business on their own terms.

The digital era has also made sex work more convenient and adaptable to modern lifestyles. Anyone can log into a platform, create content, and engage with clients from anywhere, making it easy to balance this activity alongside studies, full-time jobs, or personal commitments.

Modern Sex Work: Platforms and Empowerment

The Rise of Platforms Like Pantydeal

One of the clearest examples of how digital sex work has evolved is Pantydeal, an online platform where people buy and sell intimate items such as worn lingerie, and other exclusive content. What may seem like a niche marketplace is, in reality, a powerful model for the modern sex work economy, centered on autonomy, privacy, and community.

Pantydeal gives sellers full control over what they share and who they interact with. They can craft their profiles, set their prices, and choose what to sell, giving them independence and the freedom to shape their business according to their comfort, creativity, and personal boundaries.

From Margins to Microbusinesses

Online sex work has created a new kind of entrepreneur. Sellers on platforms like Pantydeal aren’t just participants in an underground economy, they are brand-builders, marketers, and content creators. They cultivate loyal communities, tailor experiences to their customers, and use digital tools to expand their reach.

By offering not only physical items but also photos, videos, and personalized interactions, sex workers have transformed their labor into sustainable microbusinesses. This shift has opened up new revenue streams while providing flexibility and safety.

Safety and Stigma

Perhaps the most meaningful change brought by online platforms is safety. Digital communication reduces exposure to physical risk and allows for clear boundaries around consent. Platforms also create distance between personal and professional identities, making anonymity possible.

Beyond security, community is key. Spaces like Pantydeal bring together people who share values of respect, curiosity, and sex positivity. For both sellers and buyers, it’s not only a marketplace but also a safe space to explore, connect, and challenge the shame often attached to sexual expression.

Redefining Intimacy and Work in the Digital Age

The digital era has not just reshaped how sex work is done—it has redefined what it represents. Platforms like Pantydeal are proving that sex work can be ethical, empowering, and entrepreneurial. They allow people to claim ownership over their image, labor, and sexuality in ways that were unimaginable a generation ago.

Sex work’s evolution reveals something larger about our digital world: when technology is used thoughtfully, it can expand freedom, safety, and self-expression. Far from being left behind by innovation, sex workers are at the forefront of it—driving conversations about online safety, digital labor, and the right to autonomy.

How the world’s oldest profession may struggle to compete against digitized fantasies

Just as CDs replaced vinyl records, people traded in their horses for automobiles, airplanes displaced steamships, and computers made typewriters outdated, so sexworkers may eventually find themselves supplanted by artificial intelligence systems capable of doing what they simply can’t.

That is fulfilling anyone’s sexual desires, no matter how physically impractical—or flat-out impossible—they may be.

If Vice is correct, in-person sexwork’s obsolescence is already well on its way

The minute you walked in the joint

“Unlike real women who spend hours shooting, editing, and promoting their content,” the article begins, “these digital babes are built with text prompts and AI image generators, and—behind the scenes—often run by anonymous tech-savvy men. Creators of AI influencers can earn a ridiculous amount of money without ever stepping in front of a camera.”

Setting aside its blatant sexism, should sexworkers really begin looking for other employment opportunities?

Vice seems to think so, referencing Forbes’ prediction that the AI intimacy industry will soon hit the 30 billion dollar mark, “Within a decade, we’ll likely see AI-enhanced sexual experiences that blur the line between physical and digital intimacy. The challenge will be integrating these technologies in ways that enhance rather than replace human connection.”

RECOMMENDED READ: Out of Sight, Out of Touch? Sweden Moves to Ban Adult Cam Performers

Vice’s further evidence that human sexwork may not be long for this world is a BBC report on the adult entertainment industry and the booming synthetic companion industry’s growing use of ever-more-sophisticated machine language systems.

Owner and founder of Berlin’s Cybrothel, Philipp Fussenegger, told the BBC, “Many people feel more comfortable sharing private matters with a machine because it doesn’t judge.”

Which as he goes on to explain why he’s seen a move away from human voice performers, with customers showing “an even greater demand for interacting with artificial intelligence.”

So, let me get right to the point

Another expert Vice cited was Raffaele Ciriello, writing for The Conversation, where he warns that due to the 21st century’s loneliness epidemic, “the demand for sexbots is only going to grow. Corporations will meet this demand unless society and the state set clear boundaries on what’s acceptable.”

The University of Sydney’s Senior Lecturer in Business Information Systems continues to sound the alarm about synthetic companions, saying, “the dystopian potential of sexbots for mass-customised, corporate-controlled monetisation of our most intimate sphere is unprecedented.”

I don’t pop my cork for ev’ry guy I see

Forbes says someone—who or what isn’t specified—should ensure AI sextech won’t compromise our need for physical, human intimacy.

The BBC largely agrees but concludes on a more positive note, quoting Ruben Cruz, the Clueless Agency’s co-founder and developer of the Aitana Lopez AI-generated influencer, who assures us human sexworkers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but technology might help make it far more ethical, “This shift aims to ensure that no person, male or female, has to be explicitly sexualized in the future.”

Ciriello, on the other hand, takes the BBC’s concerns to a whole new level, advocating for governmental interference, which we’ve reported about previously, doesn’t seem like a particularly good idea as they’ve often demonstrated obvious ignorance around sex, technology, and when the two combine.

The Vice article concludes by saying human and non-human sexwork appear to be neck and neck, though “As AI continues to seduce users with perfection, human creators are now in serious competition. And as of right now, both are making bank.”

Spend a little time with me

Putting all this together, is Vice correct in thinking the oldest profession will inevitably be replaced by sexual-fantasy fulfilling, far more emotionally satisfying technologies?

Don’t forget cassettes and vinyl records aren’t as popular as they were way back when, but people haven’t stopped enjoying them. Automobiles may be everywhere, but horseback riding didn’t exactly vanish. Steamships might be rare, but sailing certainly isn’t. Computers are inarguably ubiquitous, but nothing beats banging away on a classic typewriter.

The point is while synthetic companions and chatbots will eventually be indistinguishable from humans in regard to our emotional and sexual needs, some will always crave more natural experiences.

As a result, there will never be a shortage of people willing to offer their services—for a price.

Amended law would criminalize purveyors of “remote” sexual services

According to a recent AVN report, Swedish citizens may soon be unable to view or consensually interact with live-streaming adult entertainers.

Ostensibly to help curb underage exposure to explicit materials, a proposal made to the unicameral Riksdag, the Swedish parliament, would additionally prohibit the purchasig of sexuality-related, creator-generated content from cam platforms and video streaming sites.

Under consideration by Sweden’s Council on Legislation, if passed, the law would supplement what’s commonly referred to as the Nordic Model or Sex Buyer Law.

Adopted by Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Ireland, Canada, France, Israel, and Northern Ireland, it effectively decriminalizes sex work. It establishes support services for those seeking aid in leaving while making it illegal for anyone to exchange money for sexual services.

Step in the right direction?

The Nordic Model Now, which is attempting to implement the same legislation in the United Kingdom, explains the law was based on extensive research and interviews with sex workers, conducted particularly by Norwegian professor Cecilie Høigård, who wrote, “We heard about their experiences of past abuse, extreme poverty and violence. We were prepared for these stories, because of our previous studies on outcasts and marginalized people. But what the women told us of their concrete experiences of prostitution was unexpected and shocking.”

RECOMMENDED READ: New Spins on the Oldest Profession: Imagining Sexwork’s Wild Future

As the Nordic Model site states, their view is “‘Prostitution is inherently violent and damages those in it and that getting out of it is much harder than getting into it. And a criminal record makes getting out even harder.”

Or an overstep?

Others, however, suggest that the Nordic Model might be too simplistic, perhaps doing more harm than good in some situations.

Speaking to XBIZ, Cara, a Swedish cam performer, says she and fellow performers worry that the proposed addendum would ban platforms such as OnlyFans from operating in her country, effectively making her personal life illegal:

Living with a partner or receiving any form of support could now be considered pimping on their part. If this law takes effect, we stand to lose our entire livelihoods overnight as platforms are forced to exclude Swedish creators. Lawmakers claim this is meant to protect us, but how is forcing us into poverty, isolation and legal jeopardy a form of protection?

Sanna Zentio, another OnlyFans content creator, shared on Swedish TV that, “Politicians don’t really understand what we are working with digitally or actually doing. Many of us work very independently, safely and legally, and a proposal like this risks hitting hard on those who have chosen to leave the traditional sex industry for a safer and more controlled work environment.”

“Instead of banning and restricting the ability of adults to charge for nudity on the other side of a screen,” Johanna Nylander wrote in the Swedish newspaper Kristianstadsbladet, “the focus should be on cases that actually have a victim. If the home posers are paid, they should pay taxes, not be forced out into the back streets of the internet.”

We know what’s good for you

The Nordic Model is problematic. Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, a trafficking and exploitation expert lays out five reasons why its victimization of sexworkers is disempowering. One of which is that lawmakers should instead respect “sex workers including LGBTQI, not as victims but as rights holders, including the right to sexual self-determination.”

In this light, the proposed expansion of current Swedish anti-prostitution and pornography laws—coupled with Zentio’s comment about legislators not understanding why adult streaming services provide a far safer environment for the consensual exchange of sexual services—certainly seems ill-thought-out.

As Giammarinaro further writes, the Nordic Model’s blunt force approach completely misses the point, “Criminalising clients has the negative consequence of orienting law enforcement activities towards the easiest target, while very probably they will neglect more sophisticated and demanding investigative activities aimed at identifying criminal networks organizing women’s trafficking and exploitation.”

As the Nordic Model was based on interviews with sex workers, the question is why haven’t the Swedish authorities continued to seek their input?

After all, the law is supposed to be about protecting sex workers, so why not ask what they want instead of treating them like objects whose opinions and their very lives aren’t important?

Places where pleasure, architecture, and urban planning go hand-in-hand

In Rebel Cities: From the Right to the City to the Urban Revolution, famed anthropology and geography professor David Harvey writes, “The right to the city is not merely a right of access to what already exists, but a right to change it after our heart’s desire.”

His use of the word desire, while not explicitly referring to sexual pleasure, offers an intriguing possibility: what if tomorrow’s cities were designed and built to be as arousing as they are efficient and comfortable?

Not necessarily explicitly so, but rather with the understanding that for many people, sex is an essential part of life and, therefore, shouldn’t be shunned, hidden away, and instead should be accepted and, dare we suggest, openly celebrated.

Sound like a more-than-somewhat radical idea? You might be surprised that these sorts of sex-affirming cities have been around for hundreds of years—and might become more sensual, playful, and innovatively sex-tech-integrated in the future.

Right here, right now

Restricting ourselves to Europe, though other countries and continents have their fair share of pleasure-recognizing cities, Amsterdam and Hamburg’s sex work districts are often considered models for balancing a city’s needs with its citizens’ sensual passions.

In fact, when faced with a number of growing, predominantly tourist-related problems relating to its red light area, Amsterdam began planning the construction of a single, high-tech structure to protect sex workers and their clients.

If approved, The Erotic Center will take nearly seven years to complete, and, in addition to providing spaces for hundreds of sex workers to ply their trade, it would feature a dedicated police presence, on-site medical care, and other support services.

Similarly, Hamburg’s Reeperbahn has expanded dramatically, currently occupying a sizable section of the City. Mirroring Amsterdam, police are on hand, up-to-date healthcare facilities are available, and sex workers are licensed, which involves participating in mandatory, state-sponsored health counseling every year.

Cities of love

Creating erotically stimulating living environments is also far from new. Several 1960s-70s avant-garde architects envisoned a wide scope of fascinating and frequently intentionally provocative or, depending on who you ask, playful, architectural concepts. Of these, Superstudio, based in Italy, and the UK’s Archigram are arguably the most recognized.

While Superstudio tended towards chilling, monolithic, Brutalist-inspired ideas, Archigram took a different, deconstructive approach like their Walking Cities, a self-contained, self-propelled ambling metropolis.

RECOMMENDED READ: Sensual Spaces: When Architecture, Sex, and VR Move In Together

Their Plug-In and, notably, Instant Cities put forward an interesting model for a possible sex-inclusive city by swapping fixed structures like buildings for individual, easily combinable or recombinable living units.

Meanwhile, Instant Cities are extra-modifiable via inflatable structures and extra-transportable by airship. Think of them like swarms of mini-Burning Man festivals, drifting apart or coming together whenever or however their residents wanted or, better yet, desired.

Close your eyes and picture—

Echoing Archigram’s modular thinking, let’s put together our own pleasure-positive City, starting by taking Amsterdam and Hamburg’s intelligent, conscientious, approach to consensual sexwork by constructing a safe space for our residents to enjoy themselves.

While we’re at it, we might as well equip it with a bevy of cutting-edge sextech possibilities, from sexbot brothels and on-site shops selling super high-end models to specialized virtual reality experiences—the latter accessible either on-site or from the comfort of anyone’s home.

So why not take a page from Archigram’s book and give people the option to mix and match their accommodations or add any number of sex-related add-ons?

Want your own BDSM playspace or luxuriously-sensual boudoir? Merely purchase whichever one you want and snap it to your home, just like clicking a couple of Lego bricks together.

Naturally, our City must be fashioned out of low-impact, infinitely recyclable materials, be as energy and resource-self-sufficient as possible, and be designed from the ground up to be effortlessly upgradable so that when technologies improve, or situations change, we won’t have to tear everything down and start from scratch.

Brilliant, bright, and joyous

The author Amit Ray put it well, writing, “A smart city is a city where humans, trees, birds and other animals can grow with all their glories, imperfections, freedom, and creativity. They are not just cities of technology but cities of love, life, beauty, dignity, freedom, and equality.”

Decoding social and legal complexities of escort services

Delving into the complex tapestry of human interactions, the realm of escort services emerges as a topic fraught with fascination and controversy. Termed ‘EscortsLiaison,’ this sector is a nuanced blend of companionship, transaction, and social service deeply embedded within urban life. It transcends simple definitions, reflecting the intricacies of human desires for connection, respect, and intimacy.

The industry spans a variety of services that go beyond mere physical interaction. It addresses a spectrum of emotional, social, and even professional needs, thriving particularly in metropolitan areas where discretion, sophistication, and personalized services are highly valued. This exploration aims to illuminate the layers of this often misunderstood industry, examining the interplay of social perceptions, legal considerations, and the inherent risks and benefits involved.

The Landscape of Escort Services

In places like South Delhi, the ‘EscortsLiaison’ industry is characterized by diverse agencies, independent operatives, and sophisticated online platforms. These entities navigate a complex socio-legal landscape, balancing professionalism with the personal nature of their services. Agencies serve as crucial intermediaries that ensure discretion and safety. At the same time, the internet has given rise to independent escorts who manage their clientele through personal websites, reflecting the industry’s shift towards greater autonomy and privacy.

The array of services is extensive, catering to various client needs—from attending social events to fulfilling emotional or conversational needs, illustrating the sector’s adaptability. Economically, the industry is significant, with some commanding high fees, attracting a diverse workforce seeking lucrative, flexible work opportunities, though not without potential personal and social risks.

Societal Perceptions and Stigma:

Despite its prevalence, ‘EscortsLiaison’ contends with substantial societal stigma. Shaped by media portrayals and cultural biases, public views are often narrow and judgmental, which can significantly affect the personal and professional lives of those involved. However, progressive urban environments are seeing shifts in perception, recognizing escorting as a legitimate choice and profession driven by advocacy and increased visibility of those within the industry.

This stigma affects personal relationships, legal policies, and public health measures. Combating this requires a comprehensive approach that includes education, legal reform, and a shift in cultural narratives toward a more accepting view of diverse sexual and social practices.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Legally, the escort industry operates in a gray area, with different regions having varied statutes that might criminalize related activities while leaving the actual practice in limbo. This uncertainty can expose those in the industry to exploitation and hinder their access to healthcare and legal protection. Ethically, the industry navigates complex issues of consent and exploitation, advocating for a rights-based approach that safeguards participants while addressing broader concerns of trafficking and coercion.

Safety and Health in the Escort Industry

Safety is paramount, with measures to protect against physical harm and ensure mental well-being, though challenges persist. Escorts often take precautions such as client screening and secure operational tactics, but mental health strains and access to non-judgmental healthcare remain significant issues. Technological advances offer new tools for safety but also introduce risks like privacy violations.

The Future of Escort Services

Technological and societal changes hold the potential to reshape the escort industry significantly. Innovations like virtual reality could alter the essence of companionship, creating new opportunities and ethical dilemmas. Meanwhile, evolving social attitudes and potential legal reforms could improve working conditions and reduce stigma, fostering a more recognized and regulated industry.

Conclusion

The ‘EscortsLiaison’ industry offers a compelling glimpse into the interplay between societal norms, human needs, and economic dynamics. It challenges us to rethink our views on relationships, professional boundaries, and personal autonomy. With ongoing changes in technology, law, and societal attitudes, the industry stands at a pivotal point, poised to redefine its role in modern society. By embracing a thoughtful, nuanced approach to its complexities, we can better understand and address the diverse needs and realities of those it touches.

Virtual encounters, aphrodisiac mixers, sexbot modders, and more!

From the dawn of recorded history, if not earlier, people have exchanged goods and services for certain, shall we say, intimate activities.

But as our society continues to evolve, so too will what we’re willing to pay for—and how sexworkers might adapt to meet our sexual interests.

In that spirit, let’s speculate on what sexwork might be like in the next few decades and consider how the world’s oldest profession might help meet our personal desires but also lead human sexuality into a new golden age.

Mixed Reality Experiences

As the COVID pandemic demonstrated, much of what we thought had to be done in person can instead be handled remotely.

So why shouldn’t the same be true with providing and enjoying sexual activities? Various aspects of teledildonic sexwork are already here, evidenced by the monumental rise of camming platforms, with shows sometimes featuring interactive smart sextoys. For an extra charge, of course.

As the equally impressive growth of the virtual reality adult entertainment industry has taught us, not forgetting the promise of augmented reality led by Apple’s Vision Pro headset, we could soon see the emergence of a whole new VR/AR sexwork industry.

Eventually, it might include AI-generated environments, allowing professionals to wear any number of customized digital skins to disguise their actual appearance or allow clients to play with whoever/whatever they want.

Neuro Chemists And Pheromone Wizards

Though the science isn’t quite here yet, there’s still the possibility we may shortly be able to concoct personalized, DNA-specific, sexuality-enhancing medications or arousing new pheromone-based perfumes.

Or they might supply performance enhancers for their clientele: just pop one of their wizardly neurochemical pills, specifically formulated to work your unique biochemistry, and, viola, your mind and body will be up for any sexual tasks you can imagine

All of which may see the rise of an entirely new branch of the sexwork industry, occupied by erotic artisans who, for a price, will whip up non-toxic, 21st-century versions of love—or lust—potions.

Genitalia Sculptors

The name pretty much says it all. Getting closer and closer to cracking our genetic code also means we’ll sooner than later gain the ability to alter our bodies, including but not limited to our primary and secondary sexual characteristics.

RECOMMENDED READ: Becoming Bots: The Rise of Android Fetishism

Sure, you can design your own, but why not consult with a professional, someone who earns their, no doubt quite considerable living, giving their clients the genitals of their dreams? Who knows, they might become something akin to today’s celebrity fashion designers, with their customers proudly showing their new equipment on tomorrow’s social media—especially the hottest-of-the-hot’s miniature logo.

Erotic Chatbot Trainers

Most of us are by now pretty familiar with how erotic chatbots work, that you need to spend no small amount of time teaching them how to hit your most arousing buttons.

But why do it yourself when you can hire someone to do it for you? Just tell them what you want your chatbot to be like—personality, appearance, sexual interests, kinks, and so forth—and your professional chatbot trainer will take care of it.

Or they might have a catalog of uniquely trained personalities, most of which the companies who manufactured the base model would or, due to their industry or governmental regulations, couldn’t create.

Sextech/Artificial Companion Modders

As pleasure devices get increasingly smarter, we’ll probably see the emergence of sextech black markets. In these virtual bazaars, uniquely skilled sexworkers would adjust, modify, reprogram, or otherwise modify your sextoys to your heart’s—or other body parts’—desires.

The same might also be true for your off-the-shelf artificial companion, that rather than paying the manufacturer for a customized plastic playmate, we’d instead enter into a financial arrangement with a combination artist, engineer, programmer, and sexual therapist who—for much less than the manufacturer would charge and with far greater options—do it for you.

If you think this is a bit too out there, remember many of today’s products, from Nerf blasters to computers, cars to Ikea furniture, already have extremely active modding communities. Hence, it’s not a huge leap to imagine we’ll see the same for sextoys and artificial companions.

Sexual Persona Sellers

We’re all familiar with identity theft, but what if I told you there might come a time when people sell themselves?

Not as in physical sexwork but by creating and packaging a fully-fledged, adult entertainment persona and then offering it to the highest bidder?

It begins by generating a lot, and I mean a lot, of explicit materials: picture after picture, video after video, along with training an erotic chatbot to mimic your carefully constructed stage-persona, rounding up with some artificial intelligent tweaking to disguise your true identity and generate even more adult content.

Why go through all this trouble? After getting paid for your artificial persona, you can kick back and relax—or, if you want, create another one to sell.

Some things never change—but a lot should

Fun though it is to imagine sexwork in the not-too-distant future, the most profound change, the most needed since the first person was paid for sex, shouldn’t be technological but a complete and total change in how sexwork and sexworkers are treated by the law—and from that, society.

Decriminalization would allow anyone, as long as they are old enough to consent, to engage in sexwork, a frequently dangerous occupation, without fearing imprisonment or violence.

Support would optimistically change our attitudes towards sexwork. By treating sexworkers with kindness, understanding, and respect, we’ll grow to accept sex is an important part of life and there’s nothing wrong with paying for it or willingly providing it.

Consent is what I mean by willingly, for the only crime in sexwork is when a person is emotionally, physically, or financially forced to engage in it. Otherwise, it is—or should be—a conscious decision.

We earnestly hope the future will be bright for sexworkers everywhere, but only if we make it so: by decriminalizing it, supporting those engaged in it, enforcing consensuality, and accepting the world’s oldest profession isn’t wrong, immoral, or unlawful but has been and will continue to be part of human society.
