In what could prove to be a turning point in the ongoing conflict between human performers and artificially generated ones, at least where explicit content is concerned, the audio erotica platform Quinn has started hiring an impressive roster of A-list celebrities to narrate their stories.

As reported by the UK-based Mirror, Andrew Scott, who portrayed the villainous Moriarty in the BBC Sherlock series, Grey’s Anatomy favorite Jesse Williams, Christopher Briney from The Summer I Turned Pretty, and The Hunger Games’ Tom Blyth are among Quinn’s recently acquired readers.

Quinn’s increasing popularity appears to match the rise of sites employing AI to give voice to their erotic tales, such as My Spicy Vanilla, which can also write as well as read user-customized sexy fiction. 

Meanwhile, Dipsea, Bloom, and Emjoy share Quinn’s preference for people over algorithms.  It’s difficult to say which approach may eventually dominate the audio erotica market—and whether AI or human readers will be excited or disappointed by the winner.

Tell me a dirty story

At first glance … Well, hearing today’s most sophisticated text-to-voice software systems still sounds less authentic.  

From missing nuances, mispronouncing words, and a distinct lack of performative zest to sounding distinctly mechanical if not flat-out bored, AI clearly has a long way to go before they’ll be able to pass any sort of verbal Turning Test easily.

Remember, AI-created content is still in its relative infancy, having only been released to the public a few years ago—and in that time, it’s made remarkable progress.

Case in point: the emergence of Deepfake images, where it’s nearly impossible to tell the real from the artificially generated, was once a vague threat that national and local governments have been forced to outlaw.

So while Quinn and other audio erotica platforms may prefer human readers, there’s a very real possibility that, in the near future, might realize that AI has become just as good—and, more importantly, far less expensive.

Even so, when that day does arrive, it’s a safe bet they won’t be made completely obsolete, as radio didn’t kill Broadway, and television didn’t doom theaters. People still read despite the Internet, and performers will continue to regale us with their lusciously sexy voices.

Returning to whether this is going to be good or not for those of us who enjoy listening to steamy tales, it’s hard to predict.  Though what is highly probable is that, somewhere down the road, AI will get to the point where its voice and our human voices become completely indistinguishable.

But when this audio erotica singularity goes from when to now, it might show up bearing all sorts of sexy gifts.  

For example, with the artist’s consent, you might hear your choice of spicy tale narrated by your preferred star of stage and screen, including a simulated version of AI voices performing the dialogue.

In case you’re curious, NeFR stands for “Neural Radiance Fields,” the process that enables Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to realize multi-dimensional subjects from a series of two-dimensional samples.

While the adult entertainment industry hasn’t caught on to this technology’s erotic potential, more than likely, some as yet unnamed industry genius will have a lightbulb-over-their-head moment. When they do, everything could change like nothing before or since.

Let’s be honest, just as AI image-generating software can be used for positive or less-than-positive purposes, so too could NeFRs.  Rather than dismissing the potential harm, I hope that by the time the adult entertainment industry recognizes its potential, we will also have a social and legal framework in place to prevent its abuse. In this context, NeFRs could be precisely what explicit VR content needs the most.

Lower costs, for example, might mean virtual reality may finally be able to meet its growing demand, with producers taking non-VR content and upgrading it to fully rendered, totally impressive experiences.

Why stop at making the old new again?  We all know that AI can produce sometimes disturbingly realistic, but completely illusory, images and videos, so why shouldn’t it do the same with a couple of extra immersive dimensions?

The inability to recall our erotic dreams as well as reflect on them meaningfully may soon be a thing of the past, compliments of a novel artificial intelligence application developed by the Modem design group.

Unlike many other potentially life-changing technologies, Modem’s Dream Recorder isn’t a staggering high-ticket item, instead it’s totally open source. Therefore, anyone with a certain amount of electronics skill and access to its required components can assemble it in a surprisingly short amount of time.

Made of this—

Mark Hinch, Modem’s creative technologist, Ben Levinas and Joe Tsao, its industrial designers, and Alexis Jamet, its resident artist, describe their invention as “A portal to your subconscious. The magical bedside device catches your nightly visions and plays them back as vivid, cinematic reels.”

Vivid may not be an overly accurate description, as rather than providing crystal clarity, Hinch and his team designed their Record to produce blurry, soft-focused images intentionally, similar to how dreams are usually more indistinct, less vividly precise even when we can remember them.

A head full of—

As with Snapchat’s recent text-visualizing AR glasses, Modem’s Dream Recorder leverages AI to alter pre-existing images—often without the original artist’s consent—based on user-inputted keywords or prompts.

The Modem Recorder utilizes OpenAI and LumaLabs AI software for its dream visualizations, which actively prevent anyone from generating explicit content.  

Bummer, I know, especially if you want to be able to document your subconscious’s late-night sexual fantasies, but with a relatively small amount of DIY tinkering, it should be possible to swap out these technologies for AIs that aren’t as exasperatingly puritanical.

According to Modem, putting together your own Dream Recorder should cost around USD 330, excluding extras such as having its case 3D printed if you don’t have your own. 

Not that pure novelty doesn’t have its special value, for, if anything, today’s often painfully serious world is increasing, if not desperately, seems to need as much playful whimsy as possible, but, while fun, Modem’s Dream Recorder is basically brightly wrapped around yesterday’s chocolate.

Not that the idea behind it isn’t intriguing, or could even eventually lead to us truly being able to record and playback our wildest dreams, but we would need a sexually-educated, far more open-minded AI. This would require no small amount of work, as current systems aren’t exceptionally well-informed on the subject of human reproduction, emotional health, and what does and doesn’t turn us on.

Once that admittedly Herculean task is completed, after feeding it a massive amount of either public domain or artist-permitted imagery, we can train it to listen and then, as accurately as possible, visually depict our subconscious experiences.

However, as it can take an excessive number of trials, not to mention a copious amount of errors, for an AI to create a specific image, we might help it along by letting it read our minds while we sleep.

Runnin’ down a—

How? We’re already technologically capable of monitoring what’s happening between our ears and even using AI to convert those patterns into actual words.

As University of Texas at Austin researcher Alexander Huth explained to Livescience about their work, “The really surprising and cool thing was that we can do this even without using language data. So we can have data that we collect just while somebody’s watching silent videos, and then we can use that to build this language decoder for their brain.” 

Put all this together and down what might be a surprisingly short road, we might slip on our sleep cap lined with microscopic sensors, and in the morning be able to watch, listen, and perhaps also feel again what we’d dreamt.

For the first time, we might have a door into the deepest parts of our sexual selves, unlocking never-before-seen options for erotic self-discovery, new, mind-blowingly wild, explicit entertainment possibilities, and avenues for therapeutic dream specialists to treat otherwise inaccessible sexual traumas.

Impossible?  

Perhaps, but as we’ve all learned at some time or another, sometimes the best dreams are the ones that only seem like they are.

Designboom reports these new smart, AR glasses developed by the National Library Board of Singapore in conjunction with LePub Singapore and Snap Inc. treat whatever text the reader is looking at as a prompt for its built-in AI to generate sounds played through its earpiece-mounted speakers, and project semi-transparent images onto the wearer’s field of vision.

Planned for general release sometime this year, according to designblood, the Singapore’s National Library Board sees it as “part of its initiative to use technology as a way to engage more people to read books.”

When you think about it, using AR glasses to bring the written word to life is so intuitively simple that it’s more than a little baffling why its development took as long as it has.

After all, text-scanning AR glasses have been around for several years, and image-generating AI systems aren’t exactly new, either.  Now that Snapchat has set things in motion, other companies are bound to follow suit, no doubt adding plenty of other immersive features to their upcoming products.
